How They Got Here:
#1 St. Thomas: Headlining the field once again is defending champion St. Thomas, which captured its 12th-straight MIAC regular-season championship this season to claim the tournament's top seed. Head coach Chris Olean's club went a near-perfect 18-2 in conference play this season, and the Tommies bring a 30-7 overall record into the 2014 playoffs. A year ago, UST went 2-0 in the single-elimination edition of the tournament, outscoring its opponents 21-5 in the semifinals and championship game to capture the title.
#2 Bethel: Bethel makes its third-consecutive MIAC Playoff appearance in 2014, this time as the tournament's No. 2 seed. This marks the first time the Royals have finished as high as second in the conference's regular season standings just a year after earning their first-ever MIAC Playoff victory. Head Coach Brian Raabe's club went 14-6 in the conference in 2014, and bring an overall record of 21-10 into the MIAC tournament.
#3 Saint Mary's: The Cardinals enter the postseason with some serious momentum after winning their way into the field, and then into the No. 3 seed, on the season's final day. The Cardinals swept Bethel Sunday to stay in the Playoff hunt, then swept St. Olaf Tuesday. Head coach Nick Winecke's club finished the regular season with six-straight victories, and tied for third place at 13-7 (17-21 overall).
#4 Saint John's: The Johnnies also finished 13-7 in the MIAC to match the Cardinals in a tie for third place. The Johnnies enter the MIAC Playoffs with a 21-8 overall record, and one of those wins was the historic 700th victory of Head coach Jerry Haugen's career. SJU won it all the last time these four teams squared off in a four-team, double-elimination tournament, as the Johnnies claimed the MIAC Playoff title in 2012.
Note: The Cardinals and Johnnies split their regular-season doubleheader, so the tiebreaker for the No. 3 seed was decided by the second criteria, which compares each team's record against the other teams in the MIAC Playoffs. Saint Mary's was 2-2 against St. Thomas and Bethel, while Saint John's was 1-3 against the tournament's top two seeds, making SMU the No. 3 seed, and SJU the fourth seed.

MIAC Tournament - A Year Ago:
During the regular season, St. Thomas imposed its will on the MIAC with a 19-1 record in cruising to the conference's regular-season crown -and the 2013 MIAC Baseball Playoffs was no different, as the Tommies added the league's postseason title to its trophy case. UST, the top seed, defeated second-seeded Concordia 11-2 in the championship game at Veterans Field in Minnetonka, Minn. The postseason conference baseball title is the Tommies' ninth after claiming its 33rd regular-season title - and 11th in a row - in 2013. UST has been in the MIAC Playoffs in all 14 years of the event, and they returned to the winner's circle for the first time since 2010, after losing in the title game to Hamline in 2011 and Saint John's a year ago. St. Thomas won both of its playoff games in 2013 by at least seven runs, outscoring its two opponents by a combined score of 21-5, leaving no doubt about its worth as champions | Recap | Tournament Homepage

How They Fared -Earlier This Year:
Saint Mary's vs. St. Thomas | April 15, 2014 | St. Paul, Minn.
bbvsstthomas

St. Thomas entered its MIAC doubleheader against Saint Mary's with a rather impressive pedigree. The Tommies, who have won or shared conference's regular-season title in each of the last 11 seasons, squared off against the Cardinals owning a No. 14 ranking in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25, were riding an eight-game winning streak, and were averaging seven runs, 10 hits and four walks a game this season. SMU opening-game starter Ben Johnson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and reliever Pat Regan (Mound, Minn.), however, were unimpressed, as the Cardinal duo limited the high-powered Tommies to just four runs on eight hits in Game 1 of their MIAC twinbill at Koch Diamond. Unfortunately, four runs proved to be one too many, as the Tommies held off a seventh-inning SMU rally to beat the Cardinals 4-3 in Game 1. And the Tommies were just getting warmed up. UST erupted for four runs in the top of the first inning in the nightcap and never relinquished the lead, completing the sweep with a 13-5 victory | Recap

Saint Mary's vs. Bethel | May 4, 2014 | Arden Hills, Minn.
With four games remaining in the regular season, Saint Mary's found itself battling Carleton for the fourth and final Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament invitation. To oust the Knights from the No. 4 spot, the Cardinals needed at least three wins in its final four games. In other words, the Cardinals had to win at least one of its two contests against Bethel - or their regular-season finale against St. Olaf would mean nothing. Mission accomplished - times two. Kevin Miley (St. Paul, Minn.) delivered a two-run, sixth-inning single to break a 1-1 tie, and a double dose of Ben -Ben Johnson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Ben Dobosenski (Westmont, Ill.) - on the mound proved to be the perfect combination for Saint Mary's coach Nick Winecke, as the Cardinals collected a 3-1 victory in Game 1 of the teams' MIAC doubleheader. And the Cardinals had so much fun recording a two-run win in the opener, they decided to do it again in the nightcap, scoring four runs in the sixth inning to erase a 4-2 Bethel lead and lift Saint Mary's to a 6-4 victory | Recap

Saint Mary's vs. Saint John's | April 6, 2014 | Winona, Minn.

The first game of Saint Mary's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Saint John's took a page out of the classic children's story, The Tortoise and the Hare. Fortunately for coach Nick Winecke, his Cardinals were the tortoise. SJU jumped out to a quick 2-0 first-inning lead on a two-run home run by Josh Groth -that, however, would be the extent of the Johnnies' offense SMU, on the other hand, took the more slow-and-steady-wins-the-race approach, scoring single runs in the first and second innings, before adding a pair of runs in the third to seal the 4-2 Game 1 victory. It was more of the same in Game 2 -only this time, the hare not only started fast, but had something left in the tank down the stretch. The Johnnies scored single runs in both the first and second innings, and erased a 3-2 SMU lead with two runs in the sixth and single runs in the eighth and ninth en route to a split-clinching 6-3 victory | Recap
