WINONA, Minn. — Twenty-nine Saint Mary's University of Minnesota winter-spring student-athletes earned Academic All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference recognition, the conference office announced Wednesday.

The MIAC recognized a record 604 MIAC Winter/Spring 2013-14 Academic All-Conference honorees. The 2013-14 cumulative total of 938 Academic All-Conference selections also smashed the MIAC's previous record.

Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior, or senior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale to qualify for MIAC Academic All-Conference recognition. Athletically, student-athletes in hockey, basketball, baseball, softball and tennis must compete in 50% of their team's varsity regular season contests. Baseball pitchers must appear in 10 contests, while swimmers must qualify for the finals (top 16) in individual or relay events at the conference championships, and track and field athletes must earn honorable mention status (top 8) in individual events or place in the top three as a relay team at the MIAC Championships.

Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.), John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn.), Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.), Kristen Thelen (Rochester, Minn.) and Bethany Schmidt (Sparta, Wis.) led this year's list of Cardinal academic all-conference recipients, adding winter-spring academic honors to their academic all-conference honors earned for the fall season.

Haley, Soucheray and Stolz all followed up their fall academic honors in cross country by earning Academic All-MIAC in track and field in the spring, while Thelen earned a cross country-fastpitch softball "double" and Schmidt doubled-up in women's soccer and swimming and diving.

Led by Stolz, the women's track and field team landed a school-best six athletes on the MIAC academic all-conference team, while baseball and men's track and field each boasted four members.

Stolz, Rebecca Krueger (Ashland, Wis.), Abi Osborne (Winthrop, Minn.), Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn.), Allie Thiel (Burr Ridge, Ill.) and Bridget Hayes (Chicago, Ill.) all earned academic all-conference honors in indoor track, while Stolz, Krueger and Osborne repeated the feat during the outdoor season.

Haley was named academic All-MIAC in both indoor and outdoor track and field, with Soucheray, Phil Emmerich (Mondovi, Wis.) and Bryan Ortman (Chicago, Ill.) joining the junior as indoor honorees.

Willie Doll (Amherst, Wis.), Paul LaNasa (Mahtomedi, Minn.), Kevin Miley (St. Paul, Minn.) and Pat Regan (Mound, Minn.) represented the Cardinal baseball team on the academic all-conference squad, while women's tennis players Leanne Cleveland (La Crosse, Wis.), Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) and Grace Zachman (Elk River, Minn.) were also selected.

Other academic award winners included men's hockey players Christian Gaffy (Scandia, Minn.) and Tommy Robaczewski (Chicago, Ill.); Mackenzie Klimek (Hastings, Minn.) and Heidi Martin (Ankeny, Iowa) of the women's hockey team; women's basketball players Bridget Pethke (New London, Wis.) and Sara Schoenthaler (White Bear Lake, Minn.); Thelen and Sam Borawski (Stickney, Ill.) of the fastpitch softball team); Schmidt, Kristin Wilkes (Savage, Minn.) and Scott Carnahan (St. Cloud, Minn.) from the men's and women's swimming and diving teams; and Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) of the men's tennis team.
