USTSaint Mary's at the 2014 MIAC Championships:•
Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Ill.) has enjoyed a memorable sophomore season, continually seeing his times drop with each meet he's competed in. And that trend continued on Saturday, as Newsum turned in his best performance of the season—when it mattered most. Newsum toured the eight-kilometer Como Park Course in a team-best time of 26:06, while teammate
Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) was right on his heels—literally—posting a time of 26:07 to help the Cardinals to a seventh-place finish at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinal women, clocking a six-kilometer time of 23:38 to finish 35th individually and lead Saint Mary's to a 12th-place showing |
Recap The 2014 MIAC Championships In Review:•
MEN: Somehow, St. Olaf found a way to improve on its stunning performance from a year ago en route to a third-straight title at the 2014 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Cross Country Championships. Grant Wintheiser led an Ole sweep of the top four individual places as the team finished with the second-lowest score in conference meet history. St. Olaf finished with an astounding 16 points, four better than its score of 20 a year ago, thanks to its runners claiming five of the first six individual places. The Oles' score marked just the second time a MIAC team had scored 16 points (St. Thomas, 1948), and it was just one point off the conference record of 15, which was achieved by St. Thomas in 1952 and Macalester in 1955, 1963 and 1964. St. Olaf's score is the lowest recorded in MIAC Championship history since 1964 |

WOMEN: The 2014 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Cross Country Championships were held at Como Golf Course in St. Paul, Minn., but it felt a lot like Northfield as cross-town rivals Carleton and St. Olaf engaged in a thrilling duel for the title. When the dust settled, the Knights had claimed their second-straight team title by just a 16-point margin over the Oles, with Carleton's Ruth Steinke leading the way as the race's individual champ. Carleton certainly started strong with two of the first four runners across the finish line, but St. Olaf made it interesting by grouping four runners together between places eight and 12. However, the Knights had the 13th and 15 runners across the line just ahead of St. Olaf's fifth finisher (17th) to help Carleton claim the MIAC championship for the second year in a row |
