COON RAPIDS, Minn. — Talk about being a model of consistency.
Saint Mary's University's
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) closed out his final Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championships the same way he started it.
In fact, the beginning, middle, and end were eerily similar for the Cardinal senior.
Westerberg carded his third straight seven-over-par 79 on Monday for a team-best 237 54-hole total, while leading Saint Mary's to a 10th-place team finish.
Brett Jackson (Edmonton, Alberta) also had a case of the 79s for the Cardinals, as the sophomore rebounded from an opening-round 85 to post back-to-back 79s and finish with a 243 tournament total.
David Iten (Fridley, Minn.) posted his best round of the tournament with a final-round 82 Monday to finish at 255 (87-86-82), while
Connor Brandt (Woodbury, Minn. / 86-92-87—265) and
Kyle Brodt (Roseville, Minn. / 92-88-86—266) rounded out the Cardinals' top five.
Augsburg held off a furious third-round comeback from St. Thomas to claim the team title with an 895 total, one shot better than the Tommies. Bethel and Gustavus finished in a tie for third at 901, six shots back of the champion Auggies. Saint John's placed fifth (914), followed by Concordia (915), St. Olaf (932), Carleton (951), Macalester (980) and Saint Mary's (995).
St. Thomas' Pete Sienko shot an even-par 72 over the tournament's final 18 holes and earned medalist honors with an even-par 216 total. Augsburg's Michael Barrette was three shots back of Sienko at 219, followed by Cade Montplasir of Concordia (220), Gustavus' Max Savini (220), Concordia's Landon Poss (222), Brett Gaustad of Augsburg (222), and Dillon John of Bethel (222).
