WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University baseball team kicks off its 2015 season with a 10-game spring trip to Winter Haven, Fla. Saint Mary's opens with a pair of games against Milwaukee School of Engineering on March 1.

The Cardinals boasted seven players who earned MIAC post-season honors in 2014. Taylor Thelemann (Bloomington, Minn.), Jon Schlemmer (De Pere, Wis.), Willie Doll (Amherst, Wis.), and Ben Johnson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) were named First-Team All-MIAC, while Doll, David Barry (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Steph Scatassa (Westchester, Ill.) were selected to the MIAC All-Defensive Team. … Ben Buerkle (Roseville, Minn.) was named MIAC Rookie of the Year, and Nick Winecke was tabbed the MIAC Coach of the Year. … The Cardinals made their third straight appearance in the MIAC Tournament in 2014. … The Cardinals closed out the regular-season putting together a six-game winning streak and swept four of their last five conference doubleheaders. … Saint Mary's won the first game in nine of its 10 conference doubleheaders a year ago. … Buerkle enjoyed a memorable freshman campaign, leading the team with a .405 batting average, while also boasting team highs in runs (32), hits (60), home runs (2), RBIs (33), slugging percentage (.561) and on-base percentage (.467). … Buerkle had at least one hit in 36 of the 40 games he played in—and reached base safely in 39 of 40 contests. … Buerkle kicked off his first year with the Cardinals putting together a season-opening 20-game hit streak—the longest consecutive-game hitting streak since Brady Knudsen hit safely in 21 straight games during the 2008 season. … Buerkle also owned 15 multiple-hit games—including seven games with three or more hits. … The Cardinals boasted seven players—Buerkle, Thelemann, Scatassa, Kevin Gannon (Roselle, Ill.), Pat Krieger (Mendota Heights, Minn.), and Kevin Miley (St. Paul, Minn.)—who recorded four hits in a game this season. It was the first collegiate four-hit game for all seven. … Doll, who was second to Buerkle with a .349 batting average, was the team-leader in at-bats (169), doubles (17), triples (4), total bases (87) and stolen bases (23). … Doll's 23 stolen bases and 169 at-bats were single-season school records, while his 17 doubles shared the single-season mark with Dave Belde (1998). … The Cardinals' nine home runs in 2014 came from seven different players—Buerkle and Miley each had two, while Doll, Gannon, Schlemmer, Tyler Lursen (Maple Grove, Minn.), and Zach Wolfe (Wabasha, Minn.) accounted for the other five. … Both of Buerkle's home runs last season were inside-the-parkers. … Doll led the team with 20 multiple-hit games last season. … Doll and Gannon were the only two Cardinals to have started all 41 games this season. … Gannon started every game during his three years as a Cardinal—a span of 118 straight games. … Johnson, Ben Dobosenski (Westmont, Ill.) and Steph Scatassa (Westchester, Ill.) all logged more than 50 innings on the mound for the Cardinals. Scatassa threw a team-best 57 1/3 innings, followed by Johnson (54 1/3) and Dobosenski (51 2/3). … Johnson and Scatassa shared the team lead with five pitching wins, each going 5-2 in 10 appearances. … Johnson finished with a team-best 3.81 ERA among Saint Mary's starters, while Scatassa finished at 4.08. … Scatassa struck out a team-best 42 batters. … A.J. Redders (Middleton, Wis.) made a season- and career-high 18 appearances, and accounted for six of the team's nine saves. … Johnson, Dobosenski and freshman Chris Bartosz (Woodridge, Ill.) all recorded their first collegiate pitching wins during Saint Mary's spring trip to Tucson, Ariz., while Johnson, Dobosenski and Jake Merkle (Mahtomedi, Minn.) each collected their first saves in 2014. … The Cardinals' 13 runs in Game 1 against Macalester on April 19 were a season high, while the 13 runs in the opener and 10 runs in Game 2 vs. the Scots marked the first time since beating Illinois Institute of Technology 12-4 and 15-4 on March 8, 2013 that Saint Mary's scored 10 or more runs in both games of a doubleheader. … Saint Mary's recorded three shutouts in 2014—including a 3-0 victory over Saint John's during the MIAC Tournament on May 10. The Cardinals also blanked Hamline 6-0 on April 2 and Gustavus 1-0 on April 12. … On the flip side, Saint Mary's 1-0 loss to Augsburg on April 22 marked the only time this season the Cardinals have been held scoreless. … The Cardinals scored four or more runs in 28 of their 41 games. … The Cardinals scored first in 17 of their 18 wins, and finished 17-7 when plating the game's first run. … Saint Mary's lost just twice (16-2) when leading after the sixth inning.

The Raiders head into the 2015 season coming off a 13-23 mark a year ago. … The Raiders will kick off 2015 without their top two offensive performers—graduated seniors David Miklosi and Wes Stasik. … Mikloski boasted a team-leading .369 batting average, while also leading the team in at-bats (122), hits (45), doubles (8), triples (4), on-base percentage (.431) and slugging percentage (.525). … Stasik, who hit .325 (38-for-117), owns a team-leading 18 RBIs, while also accounting for two of the Raiders' three home runs. … Brandon McCumber was named to the NACC All-Freshman Team after posting a 3-3 record and a 3.20 ERA in 11 appearances as a freshman in 2014. McCumber started four games, hurled a pair of complete games, and logged 39.1 innings. … Two of the Raiders' workhorses on the mound a year ago—Adam Vlaj (69.1 IP, 3-4, 2.60 ERA) and Luke Yogerst (59.1 IP, 2-3, 3.19 ERA) both graduated, leaving McCumber and Ben Falls (45.1 IP, 3-4, 2.98 ERA) as the aces to this year's staff. … Vlaj struck out a team-high 43 battes a year ago, while Yogerst owns 30 strikeouts and McCumber finished with 25. … The Raiders posted their lowest team ERA in over 20 years with a staff mark of 4.24. … MSOE closed out the 2014 season having dropped five of its last six, and eight of its last 10. … The Raiders boasted a 6-4 record on their home field, while going 7-19 on the road.
 
Scouting The Concordia Cobbers:

The Cobbers enter 2015 on the heels of an 18-16 campaign a year ago. … The Cobbers' 18 wins in 2014—including a season-ending 3-2 victory over NCAA Division I University of Minnesota—mark the 22nd time in the past 25 seasons that Concordia has won at least 15 games. … Jordan Gefroh capped his stellar Cobber career by being named First-Team All-MIAC, while also being selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and D3baseball.com All-Region Teams. … Gefroh became the 18th All-Region award winner for the Cobbers in the past 11 seasons. Concordia has had at least one All-Region honoree in 12 of the past 14 seasons. … Gefroh led the Cobbers in almost every major offensive category. Gefroh—who played in only 11 games and had 11 at-bats in his previous three seasons as a Cobber—hit .422, while also owning a team-best .716 slugging percentage and .469 on-base percentage. He also boasted team-highs in RBIs (34), home runs (5), triples (3) and doubles (9). … Gefroh's .422 batting average makes him just the eighth player in the last 20 years to hit over .420 for an entire season. … Michael Olson scored a team-high 32 runs a year ago, with Phil Kuball owning a team-best 44 hits—one more than Olson and Gefroh. … CC had three pitchers log 40 or more innings last season—Jackson Meland (55.1), Shawn Krueger (47.2) and Ross Merriman (40.2). … Bryce Feia made a team-high 15 appearances, going 1-0 with a 1.40 ERA with a team-high six saves. … Krueger (6-2, 4.72 ERA) and Meland (3-4, 5.04 ERA) made a team-high nine starts each, with Meland also leading the team with four complete games and 30 strikeouts. … Carleton scored 10 or more runs six times—including a season-high 15 runs in a 15-3 win over Carleton on May 3. … The Cobbers were a near-perfect 17-1 when leading after six innings. On the flip side, CC won just once (1-13) when trailing heading into the seventh inning. … Concordia was 9-0 when holding its opponents to two runs or less.

Scouting The Lyndon State Hornets:

The Hornets head into 2015 having gone 10-19 a year ago—including a 9-15 mark in the North Atlantic Conference. … Kyle Whitworth and Tyler Pelletier were named to the All-North Atlantic Conference second team a year ago. … Whitworth hit .253 with 19 hits and 16 runs scored in his senior season last year. He had two doubles, one triple, 12 walks and 14 stolen bases, while also boasting a slugging percentage of .307 and an on-base-percentage of .385. … Pelletier was among the leading hitters in the NAC, hitting an impressive .363 in 29 games. Loras heads into its season-opening spring trip coming off a 19-23 season in 2014. … The Duhawks, who finished 13-15 in Iowa Conference play, went 1-2 in the conference's post-season tournament, sandwiching a 12-1 win over Simpson between losses to Buena Vista (6-1) and Central-Iowa (7-2). … Patrick Walsh and Spence Bonner led the Duhawk offense, batting .356 and .330, respectively, in 2014. … Walsh also led the team in at-bats (149), runs (24), hits (53), RBIs (29), total bases (63), and on-base percentage (.400). … Walsh and Mike Pudlo were the only Duhawks to start all 42 games last season. … Eric DeSousa belted a team-high three home runs. The Duhawks' other eight home runs came from eight different players. … Pudlo finished the year with a team-leading 12 stolen bases, two more than Bonner. … Walsh compiled 17 multiple-hit games, while also boasting a team-best nine multiple-RBI performances. … Walsh had the team's longest hitting streak—nine straight games—and he and Pudlo each reached base safely in 12 consecutive contests. … Jake Norton was the ace of the Duhawk pitching staff, compiling a 2.37 ERA with three complete games in 45.2 innings. … Adam Schwoebel (3-4, 5.23 ERA) tossed a team-leading 53.1 innings. The Fighting Scots head into the 2015 season having gone 19-17 a year ago—including a 7-9 record in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. … Gordon closed out 2014 going 1-2 in the CCC Tournament, beating second-seeded Roger Williams 15-4 in the opener, before falling to No. 3 Western New England (15-1) and Roger Williams (7-1). … Alex Smith and Alonzo Martinez led the Fighting Scots' offense a year ago, hitting .319 and .310, respectively. … Martinez also led the team in at-bats (126), runs (22), hits (39), doubles (12) and slugging percentage (.429). … Smith, who was second to Martinez in both runs (17), hits (38),  and doubles (8) owned the team lead in total bases (46) and slugging percentage (.387). … Jesse Amaya drove in a team-high 16 runs, one more than Smith and two better than Martinez. … Eric Walker closed out 2014 with a team-leading 25 stolen bases.
