WINONA, Minn. —
Steph Scatassa (Westchester, Ill.) was impressive in his two starts for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota baseball team.
How impressive? Not only did Scatassa toss complete-game, four-hitters against both St. Thomas and Saint John's to lead the Cardinals to a pair of Game 1 victories, but the junior right-hander also earned Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, the conference office announced Monday.
Scatassa kicked off his week by limiting high-powered St. Thomas, the nation's fourth-ranked team and the defending MIAC champions, to just four hits en route to his first collegiate shutout, as the Cardinals blanked the Tommies 3-0—ending UST's 54-game home winning streak and marking the first time in 75 games St. Thomas failed to plate at least one run.
Riding Scatassa's right arm, the Cardinals also put an end to a pair of losing streaks against the Tommies—a four-game slide vs. the Tommies dating back to a 4-2 Saint Mary's win during the 2013 MIAC Tournament, and a 10-game regular-season streak that went back to a 5-4, Game 2 Saint Mary's win on April 29, 2009.
And that was just the tip of Scatassa's impressive iceberg.
Taking the mound in the opening game of Saint Mary's doubleheader against Saint John's on Saturday, Scatassa twirled another masterpiece, limiting the Johnnies to just four his en route to his second straight complete game, a 7-2 Saint Mary's victory.
All told, in his 14 innings of work last week, Scatassa went 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA, allowing just two runs—both earned—on eight hits, while walking three and striking out 11.
With his two complete games—the third and four of his collegiate career—Scatassa improved to 3-0 with a 2.40 ERA in five starts. He owns a team-leading 28 strikeouts and opponents are hitting just .227 off him.
The Cardinals (4-2 MIAC, 15-5 overall) have three doubleheaders on their schedule this week—hosting Luther in a nonconference twinbill on Tuesday and traveling to La Crosse, Wis., for a pair of nonleague contests against Viterbo on Thursday, before returning to conference play with two games against Gustavus Saturday at Max Molock Field.
