SAUK CENTRE, Minn. —
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) was good for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's golf team during the opening round of the Saint John's Invitational Saturday afternoon.
He was even better in Sunday's final round of the 36-hole event.
After carding an opening round, three-over-par 75 at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course, the Cardinal senior recorded an even-par 72 on Sunday at Greystone Golf Course for a team-best 147 in helping Saint Mary's to an 18th place finish in the two-day event.
Westerberg, who finished tied for third among the 110 golfers competing, was the only Cardinal with back-to-back rounds in the 70s.
Brett Jackson (Edmonton, Albert) struggled to an 83—after opening with a 75—for a 158 total, while
Kyle Brodt (Roseville, Minn. / 85-79—164),
David Iten (Fridley, Minn. / 89-86—175), and
Hunter Rau (Plainview, Minn. / 95-89—184) rounded out the Saint Mary's top five.
Ryan Gallagher of Saint John's earned medalist honors with a one-under 143 (71-72), finishing two shots in front of St. Thomas' Pete Sienko (74-71), and four shots better than Westerberg (75-72), Grant Exsted of Bethel (75-72), and Mack Farley of Saint John's (73-74).
Fueled by two golfers in the top five, Saint John's captured the team title with a six-over 591 team total. St. Thomas placed second, seven shots back, followed by Bethel (601), Gustavus (614), and UW-Eau Claire (615).
The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday and Sunday, heading to the Courses of Lawsonia in Green Lake, Wis., to take part in the Midwest Region Classic, hosted by Benedictine University.
