GREEN LAKE, Wis. — With one weekend remaining before the regular season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's golf coach
Greg Moore hoped the Midwest Region Classic would be a perfect chance to make sure everyone was at the top of their game.
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) certainly is.
Westerberg turned in the best round in program history, carding a four-under-par 68 to grab the first-round individual lead and fuel the Cardinals to a 12th-place showing after the opening round of the 36-hole tournament.
Along with Westerberg's career-low round, the Cardinals also got an 80 from Bret Jackson (Edmonton, Alberta), an 92 from
Kyle Brodt (Roseville, Minn.), and an 86 from
David Iten (Plymouth, Minn.).
The Cardinals return to the Courses of Lawsonia on Saturday for the second round of the 36-hole Midwest Region Classic.
