GREEN LAKE, Wis. —
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) finished what he started Saturday afternoon.
The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota senior grabbed the opening-day lead at the Midwest Region Classic Friday after carding a school-record four-under-par 68 at The Courses of Lawsonia.
And Saturday, Westerberg made that lead stand up, shooting a second-day three-over 75—a round that included bogeys on four of his final five holes—to win medalist honors by one stroke.
"It was great to see Blake put together two really good rounds like that," said Saint Mary's men's golf coach
Greg Moore. "He had a chance to go really, really low but struggled just a bit over those final five holes. But to shoot one-under for 36 holes, that's really impressive."
Brett Jackson (Edmonton, Alberta) chipped in a second-day 82 for a 162 total, while
Kyle Brodt (Roseville, Minn. / 82-86—168),
David Iten (Fridley, Minn. / 86-87—173), and
Connor Brandt (Woodbury, Minn. / 94-89—183) rounded out the Cardinal lineup.
The Cardinals close out their 2015 schedule next weekend, taking part in the 54-hole Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn. Play starts Saturday and runs through Monday.
