Men's Results | Women's Results | GameDay Preview

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — It's been two weeks since the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota cross country teams last competed—but there were no signs of rust when the Cardinals took the course for Saturday's Carleton Running of the Cows.

Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Ill.) posted a top-10 individual performance to lead the Cardinal men to an 11th-place team finish, while the youth movement continued for the Cardinal women, as freshmen Alyssa Thiel (Berlin, Ill.) and Danielle Franke (Mounds View, Minn.) led the way, helping Saint Mary's to a 15th-place team finish.

Newsum toured the eight-kilometer course in 26:16.0 to place ninth overall, with Austin O'Hare (Rushford, Minn.) the second Cardinal across the finish line in 27:09.0. Sherman Moga (Shoreview, Minn.) chipped in a time of 27:11.0, while Brandon Krogman (Owatonna, Minn. / 29:00.4), Ben Borash (Bowlus, Minn. / 29:45.3), and Marlon Barrett-Dwyer (Chicago, Ill. / 34:41.4) rounded out the Cardinals' top six.

Loras ran away with the men's team title with 42 points, with Gustavus (128), Luther (144), Grinnell (158), and St. Thomas (158) completing the top five. Central-Iowa's Mark Fairley was the individual champion, clocking a time of 25:39.0, with Loras' Mason Tope (25:45.1) finishing second.

Thiel, running just her second collegiate 6K, clocked a team-best time of 25:11.5, edging out Franke, who stopped the clock in 25:28.6 Erika Thiel (Burr Ridge, Ill.) was the third Cardinal across the line, posting a time of 26:04.9, followed by Molly Sweet (Prescott, Wis. / 26:15.0), Alicia Berkenes (Buffalo, Minn. / 26:33.6), and Maddie Bollig (St. Croix Falls, Wis. / 27:48.6).

Host Carleton took home the women's team title, finishing with 47 points, well in front of runner-up Loras' 95-point second-place effort. Cornell was third, with Macalester and Luther rounding out the top five.

Loras' Audrey Miller was the top female finisher, clocking a 6K time of 21:55.0, with St. Scholastica's Casey Hovland placing second at 21:57.0.

The Cardinals are now off until Oct. 15, when they head to La Crosse, Wis., to take part in the UW-La Crosse Jim Drews/Tori Neubauer Invitationals.
