10.31.16: The Week In Review—By The Numbers

WINONA, Minn. — It's Monday morning, and time to take one final look back at the highlights of the week that was—by the numbers.
 
0 x 2: The Saint Mary's men's soccer team did not allow a shot on goal in its 3-0 win over UM-Morris last Wednesday. It was the second time this season the Cardinals have not allowed a shot on goal in a 3-0 win, also holding Bethany Lutheran without a shot on Sept. 7.
 
1: Anya Hafiz (Woodbury, Minn.) and Mike Mezzano (Woodbury, Minn.) scored the first goals of the season for the Saint Mary's women's and men's hockey teams last Friday. Hafiz scored 9:50 into the first period of the Cardinal women's 4-3 win over Marian, while Mezzano found the back of the net at 12:45 of the second period in the Saint Mary's men's 3-3 tie against St. Thomas.
 
1: Morgan Thomas (Palos Park, Ill.) recorded her first collegiate double-double in the Cardinal volleyball team's 3-2 win over Gustavus last Saturday, as the senior recorded 18 digs and a career-best 10 assists.
 
1 x 2: Anya Hafiz (Woodbury, Minn.) and Joey Mavrin (Lockport, Ill.) scored their first collegiate goals last Friday—Hafiz's in the first period of the Cardinal women's 4-3 win over Marian, and Mavrin's a third-period tally in the Saint Mary's men's 3-3 tie against St. Thomas.
 
1-1 x 2: Anya Hafiz (Woodbury, Minn.) had a goal and an assist in both of the Cardinal women's hockey team's wins last weekend.
 
2: Jared Wolt (Farmington, Minn.) scored for the second straight game last Saturday, accounting for the Cardinal men's soccer team's lone goal in a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Carleton.
 
2: The Saint Mary's men's hockey team played two overtime games last weekend at the MIAC Hockey Showcase, tying St. Thomas 3-3, while falling to Concordia 3-2.
 
2-0: The Saint Mary's women's hockey team opened the season 2-0 last weekend, beating Marian 4-3 last Friday, and following that up with a 5-4 win over St. Norbert a day later.
 
2 x 2: The Cardinal women's hockey team boasted two players who had a goal and an assist in last Friday's 4-3 win over Marian. Anya Hafiz (Woodbury, Minn.) and Jamie Henderson (Madison, Wis.) both scored a goal and added an assist in the nonconference victory.
 
3: Jamie Henderson (Madison, Wis.) scored three goals in the Cardinal women's hockey team's two games last weekend—scoring once and adding an assist vs. Marian last Friday, before netting two goals against St. Norbert the following day.
 
3: Sean Butcher (Cave Creek, Ariz.) picked up assists on two of the Cardinal men's soccer team's three goals against UM-Morris last Wednesday—it was the first two-assist game of Butcher's collegiate career. The sophomore then added his third assist in the last two games, assisting on the Cardinals' lone goal in last Saturday's 2-1 double-overtime loss to Carleton.
 
3: Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Ill.) became the highest MIAC finisher in program history last Saturday, as the Cardinal senior clocked an eight-kilometer time of 26:08 to place third overall at the MIAC Cross Country Championships, earning him his first First-Team All-MIAC honor.
 
4: The Cardinal volleyball team boasted a season-high four players with double-doubles in their 3-2 win over Gustavus last Saturday. Brandi Blattner (Eyota, Minn.) added 17 digs to her match-high 21 kills, Brittney Hanson (Janesville, Iowa) and Lillian Braun (Mantorville, Minn.) finished with 16 and 14 digs to go along with their 29 and 20 assists, and Morgan Thomas (Palos Park, Ill.) tallied 18 digs and 10 assists.
 
4: With their 3-1 win over Carleton last Wednesday, the Saint Mary's volleyball team clinched its fourth straight MIAC Playoff berth—and the 11th under coach Mike Lester. The Cardinals open post-season play on Tuesday, hosting Bethel at 7 p.m. at the Saint Mary's Gym.
 
6, 8: Brandi Blattner (Eyota, Minn.) heads into post-season play leading the Cardinal volleyball team with 430 kills, which ranks No. 6 all-time, while teammate Morgan Thomas' (Palos Park, Ill.) team-leading 506 digs is No. 8 all-time
 
7: The Saint Mary's and St. Norbert women's hockey teams combined for seven third-period goals last Saturday—including five in the game's final 1:33. The Cardinals prevailed, winning 5-4.
 
7: The Saint Mary's men's cross country team placed seventh overall at the MIAC Championships last Saturday—equaling the men's highest place finish under coach Ward Berndt.
 
8: With their 3-0 triumph over UM-Morris last Wednesday, the Cardinal men's soccer team collected its eighth win of the season—the most wins since Saint Mary's finished 8-8-2 during the 2002 season.
 
10: Morgan Thomas (Palos Park, Ill.) dished out a career-high 10 assists in the Cardinal volleyball team's 3-2 win over Gustavus last Saturday.
 
10, 11: Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) equaled her career high with 10 saves—including eight in the first half—in the Saint Mary's women's soccer team's loss to St. Catherine last Wednesday. Pederson followed that effort up with a career-high 11-save performance in the Cardinals' 3-2, season-ending loss to Carleton last Saturday. Pederson closed out the year making eight or more saves in a game eight times.
 
11: The Cardinal men's hockey team's 12 points in their two MIAC Hockey Showcase games came from 11 different players. Bob Kinne (St. Paul, Minn.), Joey Mavrin (Lockport, Ill.), Mike Mezzano (Woodbury, Minn.), Chad Cesarz (Jackson, Mich.), and Michael Cimba (Wilmette, Ill.) scored Saint Mary's five goals, while Kinne, Andrew Cummings (Anchorage, Alaska), Alex DiBacco (Darien, Ill.), Landon Farrell (Rochester, Minn.), Kyle Meeh (Fenton, Mo.), Jude Warner (Pickerington, Ohio), and Kellen Wasell (Edmonds, Wash.) all notched one assist.
 
12: The Cardinal women's cross country team, led by Danielle Franke's (Mounds View, Minn.) team-best six-kilometer time of 24:45 to lead the Cardinals to a 12th-place showing at last Saturday's MIAC Championships.
 
13: Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) stopped a career-high 13 shots in the Cardinal men's soccer team's 2-1 double-overtime loss to Carleton last Saturday. It was the second time this season the Cardinal junior stopped 10 or more shots.
 
13: The Cardinal men's and women's soccer, and volleyball teams, had a combined 13 seniors play their final regular-season home games last Saturday.
 
25: Bob Kinne (St. Paul, Minn.) scored with 25 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Cardinal men's hockey team to a 3-3 tie against St. Thomas last Friday at the MIAC Men's Hockey Showcase.
 
28, 21: Brandi Blattner (Eyota, Minn.) recorded match-highs of 28 and 21 kills in the Cardinal volleyball team's wins over Carleton and Gustavus last week. It marked the sixth and seventh times this season Blattner has eclipsed 20 kills in a match.
 
33: With eight wins this season, Pete Watkins—who was on the sidelines for the final time as the Cardinal men's soccer coach last Saturday against Carleton—leaves Saint Mary's with 33 wins in his six seasons at the helm.
 
100: The Saint Mary's women's hockey team's 4-3 win over Marian last Friday was the 100th collegiate coaching win for head coach Terry Mannor.
