NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota cross country teams heads to St. Olaf College on Saturday to take part in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. The men's race is slated for 11 a.m., with the women's to follow at noon.

Saint Mary's at the 2016 MIAC Championships:
• October 29, 2016 * Como Park GC, St. Paul, Minn.: Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Ill.) not only surpassed his honorable-mention performances of the past two seasons, but also turned in the highest place finish in Cardinal history, clocking an eight-kilometer time of 26:08 to finish third overall. And with Newsum leading the charge, the Cardinal men earned a seventh-place team finish—equaling the best finish in coach Ward Berndt's tenure. Danielle Franke (Mounds View, Minn.), meanwhile, did not show any first-championship jitters, as the freshman toured the six-kilometer course in 24:45 to lead the Cardinal women to a 12th place team finish | Recap

The 2016 Men's MIAC Championships In Review:
• October 29, 2016 * Como Park GC, St. Paul, Minn.: St. Olaf College received a tough test from Saint John's at the 2016 MIAC Cross Country Championships, but in the end, the Oles—led by individual champion Joe Coffey—prevailed to complete the drive for five straight conference titles. The Oles placed two runners in the top five, and three more from 10-to-16 to finish with a total of 44 points. The Johnnies finished second for the second straight season, and Gustavus rounded out a formidable top three with 77 points, just 11 back of SJU. St. Thomas scored 111 points to finish fourth, and Carleton's total of 140 was good for a fifth-place showing. The 2016 Women's MIAC Championships In Review:
• October 29, 2016 * Como Park GC, St. Paul, Minn.: St. Thomas turned in an impressive team performance to edge three-time defending champion Carleton and win the 2016 MIAC Cross Country title. The Tommies put four runners in the top 12—and all five who scored finished in the top 20—to give the team a winning point total of 50. Carleton, which had entered the championships seeking its fourth straight title—and sixth in eight seasons—was the runner-up, 17 points back of UST with a total of 67. St. Olaf was just two points back in third with 69, and Saint Benedict (128) and Macalester (150) rounded out the top five. St. Catherine was sixth with 191 points, Concordia (206) finished seventh, and Hamline (223) edged Bethel (226) by just three points for eighth place. • For the third time in as many meets, Austin O'Hare (Rushford, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinal men at the Jim Drews Invitational on Oct. 14, clocking an 8K time of 25:58. … O'Hare—whose 25:58 marked the first time in his collegiate career the senior has broke the 26-minute mark—was one of eight Saint Mary's male runners to post a lifetime PR at the Jim Drews Invitational on Oct. 14. … O'Hare, who won the men's individual title at the Bethany Lutheran Invitational on Sept. 29, shaved nearly a minute off his previous season-best time with his 25:58 at the Jim Drews Invitational. … Alyssa Thiel (Berlin, Wis.) clocked the Cardinal women's best time at the Tori Neubauer Invitational on Oct. 14, posting her season-best 6K time of 24:43, narrowly edging teammate Danielle Franke (Mounds View, Minn.), who stopped the clock in 25:43. … Franke posted the Cardinals' top 6K time of the season en route to a second-place finish at the Bethany Lutheran Invitational on Sept. 29, clocking a time of 25:01. … Brandon Krogman (Owatonna, Minn.) chipped in a time of 27:05 and Jordan Malikowski (Royalton, Minn.) was close behind in 27:35 at the Jim Drews Invitational. Ben Borash (Bowlus, Minn. / 28:03), Jonathon Meaden (Rosemount, Minn. / 28:27, Isaiah Olsem (Fulda, Minn. / 28:34), and Marlon Barrett-Dwyer (34:42) rounded out the Cardinals' lineup. … On the women's side, Alicia Berkenes (Buffalo, Minn.) chipped in a time of 26:33 at the Tori Neubauer Invitational, followed by Emily Ortiz (Albert Lea, Minn. / 26:56), Erika Theil (Burr Ridge, Ill. / 27:38), and Maddie Bollig (St. Croix Falls, Wis. / 30:16). … O'Hare and Krogman were the second and third Cardinals across the finish line at last year's MIAC Championships, posting times of 27:18 and 27:29, respectively. … Franke posted a team-best 6K time of 24:45 in her first MIAC Championships a year ago. … Franke's 24:45 at the MIAC Championships was the fastest 6K time posted by a Cardinal last season.
