WAVERLY, Iowa — For the second day in a row, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's golf team had an individual post a career-best round during the 36-hole Wartburg Invitational.
Paula Avila (Weslaco, Texas)—who notched a career-low 93 during Saturday's opening round—shaved four more strokes off that previous-best in carding an 89 during Sunday's final round.
Avila's effort, along with the team-low 86 by
Kaitlin Kling (LeRoy, Minn.) helped the Cardinals to a 748 two-day total and a 17
th-place team finish.
Kling's 86 came on the heels of an opening-round 82 for a team-best 168 total, while followed by Avila's 182 (93-89).
Michaela Heuckendorf (Plymouth, Min.)—who notched a career-low 89 on Saturday—followed that up with a 106 for a 195 total, while
Sarah Munns (White Bear Lake, Minn. / 104-101—205) and
Tiarra Thompson (Jonesboro, Ga. / 108-104—212) rounded out the Cardinals' lineup.
Carleton captured the team title with a 616 total (312-304), two strokes better than runner-up UW-Stout (310-308). Grinnell (322-307—629), St. Catherine (3-3=326—629), and St. Olaf (320-310—630) rounded out the top five.
Wartburg's Brooke Klostermann and Carleton's Alyssa Akiyama shared medalist honors, shooting a one-under 143s. Klostermann opened with a 74 on Saturday and followed that up with a three-under 69 on Sunday, while Akiyama posted rounds of 73-70. Rachel Hernandez of UW-Stout (70-75—145), Sydney Busker of ST. Catherine (71-77—148) and CheyAnn Knudsen of UW-Whitewater (74-74—148) completed the top five.
The Cardinals are back on the links next weekend, heading to The Jewel in Lake City, Minn., to take part in the D3 Classic, hosted by Carleton College.
