LAKE CITY, Minn. — With his top two golfers out of the lineup, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's golf coach Steve Randgaard needed someone to step up for the Cardinals at the D3 Classic Saturday afternoon.

Enter Grace Gillis.

Gillis, whose lowest round as a Cardinals was a 100 during her freshman season a year ago, carded a team-best 94 to lead Saint Mary's to a 16th-place finish after the opening day of the 36-hole D3 Classic at The Jewel.

Along with Gillis' 94, the Cardinals got a 102 from Michaela Heuckendorf, a 104 from Sarah Munns, and 118s from Tiarra Thompson and Annika Blesener.

Host Carleton holds the first-day lead with a 313 team score, two shots in front of UW-Stout and three shots up on Saint Benedict.

Wartburg's Brooke Klostermann was the Day 1 medalist, shooting a three-under-par 69. Ziyl Wang of Carleton is sitting at second after an even-par 72, followed by UW-Stout's Trystin Kluess and Nicole Miller of Bethel, who each shot 74s.

The two-day tournament concludes on Sunday with a second round at The Jewel.
