Cardinals place fourth at Luther Invite

DECORAH, Iowa — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's golf team made the most of their second round at the Luther Invitational Saturday afternoon at Oneota Golf Club.
 
The Cardinals—playing their final round before the season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships—put together one of their best 18-hole team scores of the season, finishing with a 370 en route to a fourth-place finish.
 
Kaitlin Kling (LeRoy, Minn.) followed up her opening-round 85 with an 84 Saturday for a 169 36-hole total. Paul Avila (Weslaco, Texas) also shaved on stroke off her opening-day performance, adding a 94 to Friday's 95 for a 189 total. Grace Gillis (New Ulm, Minn.) posted a 97 for a two-day 192, followed by Michaela Heuckendorf (Plymouth, Minn. / 102-95—197) and Annika Blesener (North St. Paul / 108-114—222).
 
Host Luther took home the team title, finishing with a 678 36-hole total, while the Norse's Morgan Kranz was the tournament medalist, finishing with back-to-back rounds of 79 for a 158 total and a four-shot win over University of Dubuque's Daniela Miranda.
 
The Cardinals are now off until Oct. 7-8-9, when they travel to Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan Minn., to take part in the 54-hole Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
