Cardinals finish 12th at St. Benedict Invite

SARTELL, Minn. — Kaitlin Kling (Le Roy, Minn.) and the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's golf team was good in the first round of the Saint Benedict Invitational Saturday afternoon.
 
The senior and her teammates were even better in Sunday's second round.
 
The Cardinals, with Kling leading the way, shaved 11 shots off their opening-round 406, shooting a final-round 395 for an 811 two-total and a 12th-place team finish.
 
Kling, who opened the 36-hole event with an 82, posted a seven-over-par 79 to finish tied for 11th overall with a 161 total.  Paula Avila (Weslaco, Texas) finished with rounds of 98-97 for the Cardinals, followed by Grace Gillis (New Ulm, Minn. / 110-107—195), Tiarra Thompson (Jonesboro, Ga. / 116-113—229), and Michaela Heuckendorf (Plymouth, Minn. / 120-112—232).
 
Carleton took home the team title, posting back-to-back 318s for a 326 t  with a 626 total, with St. Catherine settling for second, 16 shots back. Bethel's Christine Pewinca earned medalist honors with a 148—including a two-under-par 70 during the second round.
 
The Cardinals are back in action next weekend, traveling to Prairie Links Golf Course in Waverly, Iowa, to take part in the 36-hole Wartburg Invitational.
