Brooke Shefchik (Stevens Point, Wis.) led the way for the Cardinal women against St. Norbert last Friday with first-place showings in the 1,000 freestyle, stopping the clock in 11:41.46 — the third-fastest time in program history — and the 500 freestyle (5:46.60). …
Griffin Rades (Shawano, Wis.) and
Alex Morrow (Stevens Point, Wis.) each picked up a pair of first-place showings — Morrow in the 1,000 freestyle (11:20.36) and 500 freestyle (5:30.26), and Rades in the 200 IM (2:08:16) and the 100 backstroke (57.97) — to lead the Cardinal men against the Green Knights. … Rades and Shefchik were at it again at the Hamline Invitational the following day. Rades matched that double-first-place effort Saturday, while also adding a third-place finish to lead the Saint Mary's men to a second-place team finish. Rades clocked a time of 2:06.36 in winning the 200 IM and added a first-place time of 5:20.68 in the 500 freestyle, while adding a 1:06.61 to finish third in the 100 breaststroke. … Shefchik and
Kierra Walske (Rochester, Minn.) posted team-best third-place showings to lead the Saint Mary's women to a second in the team standings at last Saturday's Hamline Invitational. … Shefchik placed third in the 1,000 (11:48.51), fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:48.36), and sixth in the 200 IM (2:31.33), while Walske delivered her third-place showing in the three-meter diving (159.45) and added a fourth in the one-meter (152.45). … Saint Mary's kicked off the season in grand fashion against Iowa Lakes Community College, collecting seven first-place finishes — not to mention 12 second-place efforts — as the Cardinals split their duals against Iowa Lakes Community College, with the men winning 93-75, while the women dropped a 99-91 decision. … Rades made the most of his first MIAC Championships a year ago, breaking six school records — including the 19-year-old 200 freestyle mark — a year ago. … Rades boasted the Cardinals' best finish at the 2018 MIAC Championships, finishing fourth in the 400 IM with a school-record time of 4:11.11.
