WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's swimming team kicked off the 2019-20 season on a positive note Friday evening — and both Cardinal teams picked up right where they left off on Saturday.

The Cardinal women — who collected a seven-point win over Concordia in a dual on Friday evening — battled the Cobbers to a 95-95 deadlock on Saturday, while breezing to a 129-59 win over Iowa Lakes Community College. The Saint Mary's men, meanwhile, dropped a 124-73 decision in its dual against the Lakers.

Brooke Shefchik (Stevens Point, Wis.) led the way for the Cardinal women, collecting a pair of first-place finishes, while Olivia Fleming (Hugo, Minn.) and Alexis Holliday (South Milwaukee, Wis.) each added firsts and Fleming also delivered a second.

Shefchik touched the wall in 11:38.19 to win the 1000 freestyle and added a first-place time of 5:46.95 in the 500 free, while Fleming delivered a 31.09 to win the 50 backstroke and Holliday touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle, stopping the clock in 1:00.07. Fleming also added a second-place time of 1:08.86 in the 100 IM.

On the men's side, Brennen McClay (Shakopee, Minn.) picked up the Cardinals' two first-place showings, stopping the clock in 22.87 to win the 50 freestyle and posting a time of 49.98 to win the 100 freestyle. Darren Anes Dy Quiangco (Rochester, Minn.) chipped in a pair of seconds in the 100 IM (1:01.09) and 50 butterfly (27.53), while Cole Stepanovich (St. Francis, Wis.) was second in the 50 backstroke (29.15) and Griffin Rades (Shawano, Wis.) posted a second-place time of 31.11 in the 50 breaststroke.

The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday, heading to St. Paul, Minn., to take part in the Hamline Invitational.
