MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Another day, another school record.
And that was just the tip of the iceberg for the Saint Mary's University swim teams during Day 2 of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Brennen McClay (Shakopee, Minn.) put together one of the fastest 50 freestyle times in program history, stopping the clock in 21.78 to become the Cardinals' first finals qualifier this season.
McClay — whose prelim time was not only a career-best, but also the fastest time since 2010 — posted a time of 21.95 in the evening finals, placing 12th overall.
Brooke Shefchik (Stevens Point, Wis.) — fresh off a school record time of 2:04.43 during the opening leg of the 800 freestyle relay on Wednesday — racked up school record No. 2, posting a time of 2:33.58 in the 500 freestyle.
Katie Beitz (Blaine, Minn.) and
Claire King (Red Wing, Minn.) also competed in the 500 freestyle, recording times of 5:46.36) and 5:52.77, respectively. Beitz's time was a lifetime best, while King's was her fastest of the season.
Erica Camarato (DeForest, Wis.) and Darren Anes Dy Quiangco (Rochester, Minn.) also turned in season-best performances during Thursday's prelims, with Camarato touching the wall in 2:33.58 in the 200 IM, while Anes Dy Quiangco recorded a time of 24.59 in the 50 freestyle.
King, Camarato, Shefchik, and Beitz closed out the evening by posting a time of 4:33.25 to place 10th in the 400 medley relay.
The Cardinals — who are sitting eighth in the men's team standings and ninth in the women's — are back in the pool on Friday for Day 3 of the four-day event. Prelims at the U of M Aquatic Center are set for 10:30 a.m., with finals slated for 6:30 p.m.
