Cardinals pick up right where they left off

ROCHESTER, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's swim team kicked off the three-day Rochester Invitational in impressive fashion Friday evening — and both Cardinal squads picked up right where they left off during Day 2 on Saturday.
 
Brooke Shefchik (Stevens Point, Wis.) was one of several Cardinals with a busy preliminary morning on Saturday. The junior touched the wall in 5:05.49 in the 400 IM, while adding a time of 2:09.24 in the 200 freestyle.
 
Olivia Fleming (Hugo, Minn.) delivered a time of 26.13 in the 50 freestyle and a 1:08.81 in the 100 backstroke, while Katie Beitz (Blaine, Minn.) posted a 27.11 in the 50 freestyle and a 2:11.20 in the 200 freestyle. Claire King (Red Wing, Minn.) chipped in a 27.89 in the 50 freestyle and a 2:14.85 in the 200 freestyle, with Ashlyn Seifert (Austin, Texas) recording times of 27.94 and 2:10.95 in the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle, respectively, and Mara Caples (Rochester, Minn.) recording a 1:02.50 in the 100 backstroke and a 2:31.23 in the 200 butterfly.
 
Other top finishes for the Cardinal women included, Erica Camarato stopping the clock in 1:19.16 in the 100 breaststroke, Katie Domack (Lakeville, Minn.) notching a 27.13 in the 50 freestyle, and Dakota Becerra (Yorba Linda, Calif.) posting a 2:25.09 in the 100 IM.
 
In the evening relays, Caples, Shefchik, Fleming, and Beitz touched the wall in 1:57.43, while the 200 freestyle group of Caples, Fleming, Seifert and Beitz delivered a time of 1:46.52.
 
On the men's side, Brennan McClay (Shakopee, Minn.) and Casey Hanson (Grand Rapids, Minn.) posted times of 22.14 and 25.37 in the 50 freestyle, while Hanson also added a 1:05.19 in the 100 backstroke, McClay notched a 1:54.13 in the 200 freestyle, and Jostin Alvarado (Northlake, Ill.) stopped the clock in 1:16.65 in the 100 breaststroke.
 
Prelims in the third day of the three-day event begin Sunday morning, with finals slated for Sunday evening.
