MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota's
Brooke Shefchik (Stevens Point, Wis.) is making the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships look as easy as 1-2-3.
For the third straight day, the Cardinal sophomore rewrote the Cardinal record books on Saturday, this time breaking the school's seven-year-old 400 IM mark.
Fresh off school-record performances in the 800 freestyle relay (Thursday) and 500 freestyle (Friday), Shefchik shaved three seconds off Linda Tierney's seven-year-old mark — touching the wall in 5:00.89.
Griffin Rades (Shawano, Wis.) and Cole Stepanovich (St. Francis, Wis.) also found themselves in the MIAC spotlight for the Cardinals Saturday, as Rades posted a time of 1:03.13 to qualify for the consolation finals in the 100 breaststroke, while Stepanovich earned a consolation final berth with a time of 58.68 in the 100 backstroke.
In the finals, Stepanovich clocked a time of 58.87 to place 15th, while Rades posted a time of 1:03.56 to finished 16th.
Also in action for the women on Saturday,
Emme Quandt (Shawano, Wis.) chipped in a 1:08.89 in the 100 butterfly, while three Cardinals — Ashley Seifert (Austin, Texas / 2:05.88),
Katie Beitz (Blaine, Minn. / 2:11.12),
Claire King (Red Wing, Minn. / 2:13.28), and
Amanda Hansen (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / 2:13.95) — all competed in the 200 freestyle, and
Erica Camarato (DeForest, Wis.) posted a time of 1:19.82 in the 100 breaststroke.
On the men's side, Alex Morrow (Stevens Point, Wis.) swam a 4:42.81 in the 400 IM, while Stepanovich and Darren Anes Dy Quiangco (Rochester, Minn.) posted times of 58.19 and 58.56, respectively, in the 100 butterfly. Anes Dy Quiangco also competed in the 100 breaststroke, clocking a time of 1:07.84, and Stepanovich added a XXX in the 100 backstroke. Jack Wells (Glenview, Ill.) opened the first of his two diving competitions by placing 11th in the one-meter with a score of 240.00.
In the 200 freestyle relays, the Cardinal men placed eight with a time of 1:39.36 and the Saint Mary's women finished 11th in 1:48.00
The four-day event, held at the University of Minnesota's Jean Freeman Aquatic Center, concludes on Sunday, with preliminaries at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m.
