WINONA, Minn. — If there were any concerns about a sophomore slump, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota's
James Green (East Bethel, Minn.) has quickly put them to rest.
Â
A First-Team All-MIAC selection and the conference's Rookie of the Year a year ago, Green has picked up right where he left off — and was his usual dominant self in the Cardinal baseball team's MIAC-opening doubleheader against nationally ranked Saint John's last Sunday.
The Cardinal sophomore tossed a complete-game four-hitter in leading Saint Mary's to a 2-1 win over the 20th-ranked Johnnies in the opening game of their two-game series.
Â
And the effort did not go unnoticed, as he was named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday
Â
Green — who earned his second Pitcher of the Week honor of the year, having also landed the distinction following the Cardinals' spring trip in early March — was in complete control against the Johnnies. He did not give up an extra-base hit, and did not allow more than one hit in an inning — surrendering singles in the first, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings.
Green struck out three and did not issue a walk en route to his first complete game of the season.
Green — who has thrown six innings or more in all four of his starts this season — enters the week owning a 3-0 record and a 2.13 ERA, while throwing a team-high 25 1/3 innings pitched. He has walked just three batters, struck out 32, and opponents are hitting just .148 against him.
