• 1: Thanks to their 1-0 wins over Gustavus and Concordia last week, the Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team maintained its stranglehold on the top spot in the MIAC standings. Through five conference contests, the Cardinals boast a 4-0-1 overall record and 13 points. SMU is four points clear of St. Catherine (3-1-0), St. Scholastica (3-1-0), and Bethel (3-2-0), who are all tied for second with nine points.
• 2: Jordyn Matthews (Seattle, Wash.) was named MIAC Athlete of the Week last Monday, becoming the second straight Cardinal women’s soccer player to earn the weekly honor, joining goalkeeper Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.), who was named AOW on Sept. 20.
• 2: Tanner Tschumper (Foley, Minn.) and Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.) picked up their first collegiate singles wins for the Saint Mary’s men’s tennis team at last weekend’s Midwest Open. Tschumper won 6-1, 5-7, 10-7 and Raabolle added a 6-1, 3-6, 12-10 victory.
• 4: Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) picked up her fourth double-double of the season in the Cardinal volleyball team’s 3-0 win over St. Catherine last Saturday, posting team highs in both kills (18) and digs (14) against the Wildcats.
• 4: With her game-winning goal against Concordia last Saturday, Jordyn Matthews (Seattle, Wash.) has now scored four of the Cardinal women’s soccer team’s last five goals — two against St. Catherine on Sept. 26, one vs. UW-Stout on Sept. 27, and one against Concordia last Saturday.
• 5: Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.) recorded her team-leading fifth double-double of the season in the Saint Mary’s volleyball team’s 3-1 win over St. Scholastica last Friday, posting 21 assists and adding 14 digs.
• 5: The Saint Mary’s men’s tennis team had five of its singles matches at the ITA Regional/Midwest Open extended to a third set. Tanner Tschumper (Foley, Minn.) kicked off his collegiate career with a 6-1, 5-7, 10-7 victory, while Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.) also opened with a three-set thriller, winning 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 victory. Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Minn.) and Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.) were also extended to a third set in their opening-round matches, with Huemoeller falling 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 at the ITA Regional and Stene dropping a marathon 6-1, 3-6, 12-10 decision at the Midwest Regional. E.J. here-Hietala (Duluth, Minn.) rounded out the three-set parade with a 6-7 (5), 6-1, 10-8 victory in the second round.
• 6: The Cardinal women’s soccer team’s last six games — including last week’s MAIC matchups against Gustavus and Concordia — have all been decided by one goal or less. SMU has beaten Carleton (1-0), St. Catherine (2-1), Gustavus (1-0), and Concordia (1-0), lost to UW-Stout (2-1), and tied Saint Benedict (0-0).
• 5, 6: Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) posted her fifth and sixth shutouts of the season last week, stopping all five shots against Gustavus last Wednesday and adding a two-save effort in blanking Concordia three days later. Nguyen has now stopped 32 of the 33 shots she’s faced for a league-leading 0.12 goals-against-average and .970 save percentage.
• 9, 10: After posting a career-high 12 saves in the Saint Mary’s men’s soccer team’s 3-2 loss to UW-Eau Claire on Sept. 25, Daniel Sessler was once again a busy man between the pipes for the Cardinals last week — stopping nine shots against Gustavus last Tuesday and 11 vs. Concordia four days later.
• 9-1-1: With their 1-0 win over Concordia last Saturday, the Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team improved to 9-1-1 overall. It’s the Cardinals’ best start since opening the 1994 season 9-1-1. That 1994 team went on to finish 16-3-1, beating Gustavus in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, before falling to UC-San Diego in the second round.
• 12: Elise Amerongen (Lake Elmo, Minn.) posted a team-high 12 kills in the SMU volleyball team’s 3-1 victory over St. Scholastica last Friday. The 12 kills were one shy of her career-high 13-kill effort against Westminster earlier this season.
• 17: After 17 straight road matches, the Cardinal volleyball team finally opened the home portion of their season last Friday, rolling to a 3-1 MIAC win over St. Scholastica.
• 18: Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) posted a career-high 18 digs in the Saint Mary’s volleyball team’s 3-1 win over St. Scholastica last Friday. McNally has now recorded 10 or ore digs in a match five times this season.
• 25:59: Amanda Tuvey (West St. Paul, Minn.) led the way for the short-handed Cardinal women’s cross country team at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational last Friday, touring the Whitetail Golf Course layout in a career-best 25:59,
• 29: DeJaye Baab (Wabasha, Minn.) recorded a season-high 29 digs in the Cardinal volleyball team’s 3-1 win over St. Catherine last Friday. The 29-dig effort marked the fifth time this season the senior has amassed 20 or more digs in a match.
• 29:30: Quinn Steinbrecher (Holmen, Wis.) — the lone Cardinal male competing at last Friday’s UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational — covered the eight-kilometer course in 29:30.
