Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Cardinals dominate Wartburg 9-0

WINONA, Minn. — If there's one thing to be said about the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team, it's that the Cardinals have a short memory.

A week ago, the Cardinals opened the season with an 8-1 loss to Bethel, and promptly beat Loras 7-2 the following day to start a two-match winning streak.

Friday evening, the Cardinals suffered their second loss of the season — this one a 6-3 setback the hands of St. Catherine — and promptly put that loss behind them and dominated Wartburg 9-0 Saturday afternoon at the Winona Tennis Center.

"This was an excellent performance by the ladies," said Saint Mary's coach Jeff Halberg. "Wartburg came into this match with an 11-2 record and a second-place showing in the American Rivers Conference, but our ladies were intimidated in the least and put forth a dominant performance."

The Cardinals cruised to three straight doubles wins — all by 8-2 counts — and completed the sweep with six singles wins, five of which came in straight sets.

Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.), Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.), Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.), Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.), and Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.) dropped just a combined 19 games in sweeping their singles matches, while Maggie Frye (Colorado Springs, Colo.) outlasted Wartburg's Georgia Nissen in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, 10-7 to seal the win.

The Cardinals (3-2 overall) are back in action next weekend, hosting Hamline and St. Olaf in a pair of MIAC matches at the Winona Tennis Center. SMU and HU will square off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, with the Oles coming to town at 12:30 p.m. the following afternoon.
