MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — After coming up empty in their season-opener against St. Thomas last Tuesday, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team finally scored its first goal of the season Sunday afternoon — and needed less than three minutes to do it.
Mary Loy (Burien, Wash.) found the back of the net just 2:13 into the first half — and the Cardinals made that early lead stand up, beating the Auggies 1-0 in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup at Edor Nelson Field.
And the win was a significant one for the Cardinals.
Not only did SMU collect its first goal, and first win of the year, the 1-0 victory marked coach
Nick Rizzo's first as Saint Mary's head coach — while also snapping SMU's 10-game losing streak against the Auggies.
But wait, there's more significant firsts …
Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) stopped all three Augsburg shots she faced en route to her first collegiate win — and her first collegiate shutout.
Saint Mary's held an 11-8 advantage in shots attempted, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
The Cardinals (1-1-0 MIAC, 1-1-0 overall) are back in action on Saturday, as they head to Moorhead, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. conference showdown against Concordia.
