MOORHEAD, Minn. —
Jordyn Matthews (Seattle, Wash.) picked the perfect time to net her first goal of the season.
Matthews — who led the team in scoring with 15 goals in her first year in a Saint Mary's jersey, but was held scoreless in SMU's first two games this season — found the back of the net six minutes into overtime Saturday afternoon, lifting SMU to a 2-1 victory over Concordia at Jake Christiansen Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, Saint Mary's drew first blood, scoring in the 63rd minute on a goal by
Kassie Arriaga (Chula Vista, Calif.), taking a cross from
Emily Schaffer (Hampton, Minn.) and rifling a shot past CC goalkeeper Breanna Nelson.
The lead did not last long, however, as the Cobbers answered less than two minutes later on a goal by Samantha Dalsin to knot the game at 1-1.
Neither team could net the game-winner over the final 25 minutes of regulation — setting up Matthews' overtime heroics.
Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) faced just two shots in goal for the Cardinals, finishing with one save, while Nelson had seven saves for the Cobbers.
Saint Mary's (2-1-0 overall) is now off until April 25, when they travel to St. Joseph, Minn., for a 1 p.m. showdown against Saint Benedict.
