  SAINT MARY'S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT
• HOW THEY GOT HERE: The Cardinals earned a spot in the NCAA Regional by winning the MIAC Playoff championship, beating St. Thomas 6-3 in the title game. SMU finished the six-team tournament 4-1 to earn its first-ever MIAC Playoff Title.
• A LONG TIME COMING: Saint Mary's appearance in the regional marks the first time since 1993 that the Cardinals have qualified for the national tournament. Saint Mary's finished 4-2 in regional play that year, falling to UW-Oshkosh 6-0 in the opener, before bouncing back with wins over UW-Whitewater (5-3), Concordia (12-7), and UW-Oshkosh (4-2), before falling to the Titans 5-2 in the championship game.
• REGIONAL FOES: Saint Mary's has only faced two of the other five teams in the regional. The Cardinals lost to Aurora 4-0 in their last meeting on March 16, 2018, while sweeping the University of Northwestern 4-1 and 10-5 on March 18, 2015. SMU?has never faced Johns Hopkins, Trinity (Texas) or Misericordia.
• MIAC TOURNAMENT RECAP: Saint Mary's won its first three post-season games — beating Concordia (6-1), Gustavus (17-5), and St. Thomas (6-3). SMU lost to St. Thomas 6-5 to force the winner-take-all final game, which the Cardinals won 6-3. … Andy Tepp and Liam Belleveau hit a team-leading .400 in MIAC Playoffs action. … Tepp recorded a team-leading eight hits, two more than Belleveau, Joey Costello, and Will Matthews. … Four of Matthews' six post-season hits have been for extra-bases — three doubles and a three-run home run. … SMU used nine pitchers in five MIAC Playoff games. Addison Hochevar, Jake Mercado, Jonathan Cieminski, and Ryan Wolfe picked up the pitching wins.
• MAKING HISTORY: With their MIAC Playoffs title-clinching win over St. Thomas, the Cardinals improved to 29-14 on the season. The 29 wins are a single-season program record, surpassing the 1990 team, which finished 28-8. Saint Mary's has now won 20 or more games five times under current head coach Nick Winecke. … Speaking of records, the Cardinals have stolen a program-record 83 bases on 99 attempts. … SMU is currently tied with the 2016 team for the most games played (43) and doubles (81). Individually, Matthews is tied for the with Willie Doll '16 for the single-season record in doubles (17), and Tyler O'Brien has shattered the program marked for times hit by a pitch with 16. Justin Weinberg is currently sitting third all-time in career hits with 182. He trails 179, trailing Willie Doll '16 (220) and Ben Buerkle '17 (233).
• ON A ROLL: The Cardinals enter NCAA Regional play having won four of their last five, seven of their last nine, and eight of their last 11.
ª STREAK-SNAPPING: Saint Mary's first 6-3 win over St. Thomas in the MIAC Playoffs on May 21 snapped a five-game losing streak against the Tommies, while the Cardinals' 17-5 win over Gustavus a day earlier ended a three-game, post-season slump against the Gusties.
• AT THE PLATE: Matthews is the Cardinals' offensive leader, owning a team-best .345 batting average, percentage points in front of Justin Weinberg (.342) and Belleveau (.340). Taylor Anderson (.308) is also hitting above .300 heading into NCAA tournament play. … Matthews also leads the team in RBIs (34), total bases (77), slugging percentage (.542) and on-base percentage (.414). Weinberg, meanwhile is the team-leader in at-bats (149), runs (39), and hits (51).
• STRINGING IT TOGETHER: Weinberg boasts a team-best 16 multiple-hit games, one more than Matthews. Weinberg's four-hit showing against St. Olaf on April 26 is the Cardinals' first four-hit game of the season. Matthews and Andy Tepp (Stevens Point, Wis.), meanwhile, share the team lead with 10 multiple-hit games.
• RUNNING THE BASES: Tepp enters NCAA play riding a 10-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in each of the Cardinals' last 23 games. Joey Costello had his season- and career-high 13-game hit streak snapped against St. Thomas on May 21, but has been on base in 16 straight games.
• GOING YARD: Matthews hit his team-leading third home run in Saint Mary's 6-3 victory over St. Thomas on May 22. It was Saint Mary's second three-run home run of the day — O'Brien launched a three-run shot in SMU's 6-5 loss to the Tommies in their first meeting of the afternoon. Weinberg and O'Brien have head hit two round-trippers, while Jack Arndt (Coon Rapids, Minn.) owns the other. … Belleveau's HR vs. Concordia on April 17, and O'Brien's and Arndt's round-trippers against Augsburg on April 11, were all collegiate firsts.
• OFFENSIVE FIRST-TIMERS: Saint Mary's boasts three players who have recorded their first collegiate three-hit games this season — Anderson, O'Brien, and Trevon VanEgtern. … Zach Drake's four runs scored in the nightcap against Crown on March 29 were a single-game career-high and marked the first time since Joe Seegers against Rose-Hulman on March 1, 2018 that a Cardinal has scored four runs in a game. … Belleveau drove in a career-high five runs against Gustavus on May 20 — the most RBIs in a game by a Cardinal this season. VanEgtern, meanwhile, drove in a career-high four runs in SMU's 14-6, Game 2 loss to the Oles on April 24 — it's the Cardinals' only four-RBI game this season.
• ON THE MOUND: Luke Gilbertson (7-0, 2.38 ERA) and Ryan Wolfe (7-3, 4.23 ERA) have been the workhorses of the Cardinal pitching staff, tossing 64.1 and 61.2 innings, respectively. … Gilbertson and Wolfe share the team lead with seven pitching wins, while Wolfe and Addison Hochevar have made a team-best 13 pitching appearances. … Cieminski leads the Cardinal staff in strikeouts with 41, including a career-high seven in 3.1 innings of relief against Concordia on May 19.
GOING THE DISTANCE: Gilbertson has thrown a team-leading three complete games — all nine-inning affairs — while Wolfe has tallied a pair of complete games. The duo own all five of Saint Mary's complete games this season.
• PITCHING MILESTONES: Gilbertson notched a complete-game, six-hit shutout in Game 2 against Macalester on April 22 for his first collegiate complete game, and first collegiate shutout. … Wolfe tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout against Augsburg on April 10. Wolfe faced just 22 batters — one over the minimum, and allowed one a third-inning single. It was his third career shutout and fifth career complete game. … Wolfe hurled four innings of one-run, four-hit relief in the MIAC Playoff title game for his first save of his five-year collegiate career. … Justin Haugo (1-1, 1.80 ERA) collected his first collegiate pitching win against Augsburg on April 11, tossing four innings of shutout relief in the Cardinals' 5-4 victory. … Hochevar (4-1, 2.10 ERA) earned his first win as a Cardinal against Augsburg on March 16, and notched his first collegiate save against Hamline on . … Jordan Zabel (Elgin, Minn. / 2.2, 5.25 ERA) collected his first collegiate pitching win against Gustavus on March 26. … Cieminski (1-1, 3.38 ERA) recorded his first collegiate save in the nightcap against Carleton on April 6. … 
• PITCHING CAROUSEL: Saint Mary's used a single-game, program-record nine pitchers in its 11-10 win over Carleton on May 12. Four days later, SMU used seven pitchers — one in each inning — in its 6-1 loss to Augsburg last Sunday.
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals had seven players score two or more runs in their 17-5 MIAC Playoff win over Gustavus on May 21. Weinberg and Matthews each scored three times, while O'Brien, Anderson, Tepp, Costello, and Drake all scored twice. … Saint Mary's 18 hits against Carleton on April 12 — which came from 12 different players — were a season-high. … The Cardinals' 17 runs against Gustavus on May 20 were a season high — and the most scored in a game since plating 19 against Finlandia on March 1, 2017. Saint Mary's has now scored 10 or more runs in a game six times this season. … Saint Mary's has played 13 games decided by two runs or less — including seven one-run contests. SMU is 6-1 in those seven one-run games. … Saint Mary's 8-7, 10-inning win over Concordia on April 17 is the Cardinals' first extra-inning game of the season. … Saint Mary's is 15-0 when holding its opponent to two runs or less — and 17-2 when scoring the game's first run. … SMU is 24-1 when leading after six innings, and 16-1 when leading heading into the eighth. … The Cardinals' DH vs. Luther on March 14 was their first home game in 683 days, dating back to a conference DH vs. Gustavus on May 1, 2019.
  AURORA SPARTANS SCOUTING REPORT
• HOW THEY GOT HERE: The Spartans, who boast a 37-6 overall record, earned their place in the 2021 Reg after winning the Northern Athletics Conference (NACC) Tournament championship series. With their 7-1, 13-5 wins over Concordia (Wis.) in the NACC championship series, Aurora collected its third straight NACC tournament crown.
• ON A ROLL: After dropping their final regular-season game to Benedictine (5-2) — a loss that snapped Aurora' eight-game winning streak — the Spartans have rattled off five straight wins. Aurora has outscored its opponents 46-9 during its current five-game run. … Aurora opened the season with 13 consecutive wins, before dropping back-to-back games (3-2 and 5-2) to then-No. 2 Washington (Mo.) University.
• AT THE PLATE: As a team, the Spartans are hitting .333 and seven players who are hitting .300 or better through 43 games. Corey Vondra leads the team in batting average at .400, followed by Dylan White (.369), Jacob Ambuel (.366), Collin Meinert (.360), Josh Reinhardt (.340), Justi Sartori (.321), and Jeff Wedekind (.320).
• "V" IS FOR VERY GOOD: Along with his team-leading batting average, Vondra also leads the Spartans in runs (50), hits (72), doubles (17), triples (5), total bases (111), and on-base percentage (.481).
• HEAVY HITTERS: The Spartans have amassed 178 extra-base hits this season, including 111 doubles, 24 triples, and 43 home runs. Eight players have accounted for 41 of AU's 43 home runs — Wedekind (8), White (6), Paul Dobravec (6), Santori (5), Ambuel (5), Vondra (4), Reinhardt (4), and Meinert (3).
• HIGH PERCENTAGES: The Spartans head into NCAA play owning a .521 slugging percentage and a .426 on-base percentage.
• STREAKING: Sartori and Vondra each put together hitting streaks of more than 10 games this season — Sartori hitting in 18 straight and Vondra in 15 in a row. Meinert and Ambuel head into post-season play wit the longest active streaks at seven games.
• ALWAYS ON BASE: Wedekind has reached base safely in 26 consecutive games. Vondra — owner of a 26-game on-base streak earlier this season — has been on base ineach of the last 14 contests.
• EVERYDAY GAMERS: The Spartans have five position players — Vonda, White, Amhuel, Meinert, and Sartori —  who have started all 43 games this season, and another, Wedekind, who has started all but three contests.
• ON THE MOUND: Aurora boasts five hurlers who have thrown 30 or more innings this season — Nick Malmberg (70.0), Carter Turnquist (56.2), Kyle Blunt (38.1), Josh Reinhardt (34.2), and Skyler Yamanoto (34.2).
• ACE UP THEIR SLEEVE: Malmberg has been the true ace of the Spartans' pitching staff, boasting a 9-1 record and 1.67 ERA in 11 appearances — all starts. Mamlber has thrown one complete game and has struck out a team-leading 46 batters.
• SAVING THE DAY: Spartan pitchers have racked up 10 saves this season, led by Alec Strupp with four and Nathan Smith with two.
• PUT A BENCH UNDER THEM: The Aurora pitching staff has recorded 317 strikeouts this season, averaging 7.4 strikeouts/game through 43 contests.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Aurora scored a season-high 24 runs — and added season-bests in hits (22) and RBIs (23) — in their 24-3 win over Concordia-Chicago on May 1. … The Spartans have scored 10 or more runs 20 times this season — including 24 and 23 runs in their doubleheader sweep of Concordia-Chicago on May 1. … Aurora has been held to two runs or less in five of its six losses this season.
  MISERICORDIA COUGARS SCOUTING REPORT
• HOW THEY GOT HERE: The Cougars got a walk-off single from Dante Salerno in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat Stevens 10-9 and win the MAC Tournament title, and the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
• NCAA REGULAR: Misericordia — which enters regional play with a 29-8 overall record and the No. 3 seed — is making its 10th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
• COMING IN HOT: The Cougars enter regional playing having won four straight and 19 of their last 20 — the lone loss a 15-5 loss to Stevens on May 16. … Misericordia's last two losses have both been to Stevens, the first a 7-6, 11-inning setback that preceded the Cougars' 16-game win streak and the second a 15-5 loss to the Ducks that ended their 16-game run.
• AT THE PLATE: The Cougars head into regional action boasting a .343 batting average with 397 hits and 347 runs in 37 contests. … Misericordia has recorded 110 extra-base hits — 84 doubles, 13 triples, and 17 home runs — and has 308 RBIs. … The Cougars boast a .558 slugging percentage and a .463 on-base percentage.
• SWEET SWINGING: Misericordia boasts eight players who are hitting above .300 — Sean Boylan (.444), Santino Manganella (.406), Brady Madden (.381), Derrick Vosburg (.378), Austin Miles (.358), Dante Salerno (.342), Garrett McIlhenney (.329), and Joe Lisclo (.314).
 LEADING THE WAY: Along with his team-leading .444 batting average, Boylan also leads the Cougars in at-bats (117), runs (43), hits (52), home runs (6), RBIs (49), total bases (80), slugging percentage (.684), walks (20), and on-base percentage (.523).
• EXTRA-BASE MAN: Among his 43 hits, Madden has belted 12 doubles, four triples — both team-highs — and three home runs.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Boylan has hit a team-leading six home runs and Madden has added three. The Cougars' other eight round-trippers have come from eight different players.
• BRINGING 'EM HOME: Miscericordia has amassed 308 RBIs this season, and have seven players who have driven in 20 or more runs.
• ON THE RUN: Misericordia has stolen 87 bases this season, led by Salerno with 14, Madden with 13, Miles with 12, and Boylan with 10.
• IRON MAN: Boylan has started every game this season. He is the only Cougar to have started — or even played — in all 37 contests in 2021.
• STREAKING: Miles enters regional play riding a 10-game hitting streak, it's the longest active streak among Cougar hitters. Salerno had a 13-game run earlier this year, while Boyland (12), Madden (10), and Derrick Vosburg (10) also had hitting streaks of 10 or more games this season.
• ON THE MOUND: The Cougars' pitching staff has compiled a 4.30 ERA and opponents are hitting .263 against them. The staff has struck out 227 batters and walked 111 through 297.1 innings.
• WORKHORSES: Brendan Gray (8-1, 2.15 ERA) has logged a team-high 54.1 innings, followed by Tom Jacob (7-2, 4.93 ERA) with 45.2 IP and Isaac Snyder (2-0, 4.86 ERA) with 37.0 IP. … Tyler Leonard (2-1, 3.48 ERA) has made a team-high 14 pitching appearance, with Gray and Joe Valenti (3-1, 3.98 ERA) each appearing in 10 games.
• WINNER, WINNER: Gray has recorded a team-high eight wins, one more than Jacob.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: David McCurry (4-1, 3.50 ERA) has tossed both of the Cougars' complete games this season.
• SAVING THE DAY: Leonard has recorded six of Misericordia's eight saves on the eyar, with Valenti accounting for the other two.
• BY THE NUMBERS:  Misericordia has scored 10 or more runs in a game 19 times this season — and have eclipsed the 20-run plateau in plating a season-high 24 runs in a 24-0 win over Stevens on April 10. On the flip side, the Cougars have allowed 10 or more runs in a game just twice, falling to DeSales 11-3 and 20-13 on March 14. … The Cougars own two shutouts in 2021, and have not been held without a run all season.
  NORTHWESTERN EAGLES SCOUTING REPORT
• HOW THEY GOT HERE: Northwestern captured its first-ever Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament title, beating St. Scholastica 10-1. With the win, the Eagles earned their first-ever trip to the NCAA regional tournament.
• RECORD-SETTING WIN: Not only did the Eagles' 10-1 win over St. Scholastica in the UMAC title game earn Northwestern its first NCAA regional appearance, it was all the program's record-setting 32nd win of the season. UNW enters regional play sitting at 32-10 overall.
• ON A ROLL: The Eagles enter NCAA play having won three straight and 17 of their last 19 — including a season-high 13-game winning streak. After opening the season with three straight losses, Northwestern has won 32 of its last 39 games.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The host Eagles are 21-5 at Reynolds Field this season, home this year's NCAA Regional.
• AT THE PLATE: As a team, the Eagles are hitting .304 and boast seven players hitting above .300 — Bryce Crabb (.389), Aaron Severson (.339), Phillip Wall (.333), Sam Peterson (.330), Keegan Vercoe (.326), Mason Skrede (.303), and Wyatt Morrell (.301). … UNW has scored 327 runs and collected 412 hits in 42 games. … UNW owns 147 extra-base hits — 103 doubles, 17 triples and 27 home runs.
• LEADING THE WAY: Andrew Simonson is the Eagles' leader in at-bats (161), runs (50), and hits (48). … Peterson has clubbed a team-best 13 doubles, one more than Severson, Skrede, and Simonson.
• HEAVY HITTER: Vercoe has to do a lot of running when he makes contact, owning  has a team-best four triples and 12 of the Eagles' 27 home runs. He is also the team-leading in slugging percentage at .681.
• BASE-STEALING MACHINE: Northwestern has stolen 113 bases this season, and has five players who have swiped 10 or more bases this season, led by Simoson with 26, and Crabb and Vercoe with 19 each.
• MORE THAN ONE: Vercoe is the team-leader in both multiple-hit and multiple-RBI games with 14 each. Vercoe has recorded four, three-hit games and eight three-RBI games this season.
• STREAKING: Crabb and Peterson have each put together hitting streaks of 10 or more games this season, but no Eagle owns a current streak longer than four games. Peterson and Crabb also reached base safely in 22 straight games earlier this season. Morrell has reached safely in each of UNW's last nine games — the longest active run.
• ON THE MOUND: The Eagles boast three pitchers who have logged more than 60 innings this season — Phillip Wall (71.1 IP), Bryce Crabb (70.2 IP), and Owen Boerema (65.1 IP). … As a staff, the Eagles own a 3.24 ERA and opponents are hitting just .236.
• BUSY, BUSY, BUSY: Northwestern has five pitchers who have made 10 or more appearances on the mound, led by Wall (11), Crabb (11), and Aaron Severson (11).
• GOING THE DISTANCE: Crabb (9-3, 1.27 ERA) has tossed a team-leading five complete gams, with Boerema (6-1, 2.20 ERA) and Wall (5-3, 2.52 ERA) tossing four and three-complete games, respectively. … Crabb — whose eight wins are a team high — and Boerema have tossed the team's two complete-game shutouts.
• FANNING THE FLAMES: As a pitching staff, Northwestern has struck out 295 batters, with Boerema (79) and Crabb (62) leading the strikeout brigade.
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Eagles have scored 10 or more runs 15 times this season — including a season-high 24-run outburst in dropping Martin Luther 24-4 on April 22. … UNW's top two offensive performances this season have come against Martin Luther. Along with their 24-4 win on April 22, the Eagles also plated 19 runs in beating the Knights 19-0 on April 1. … Northwestern has been held to two runs or less in seven of its 10 losses this season.
  TRINITY TIGERS SCOUTING REPORT
• HOW THEY GOT HERE: The Tigers earned one of the five at-large berths to the NCAA Regional, sporting a 28-7 record, including a 12-2 mark in the SCAC. Trinity fell to Texas Lutheran in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, winning Game 1 9-8, but falling the winner-take-all elimination game 16-15.
NCAA VETERANS: Trinity is 33-23 in NCAA Tournament play, including a 2016 NCAA Division III national title, beating Keystone 10-7 in the championship game.
IN THE POLLS: The Tigers head into the six-team NCAA Regional tournament ranked No. 9 in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25. Trinity has been ranked as high as No. 2 this season.
AT THE PLATE: As a team, the Tigers are hitting .334 and boast six regulars who are hitting above .300 — Rafe Chaumette (.385), Tyler Pettit (.376), Jack Wisniewski (.378), Mason Meredith (.336),  Brian Schaub (.324), and Michael Goodrich (.314). … Chauette owns the team lead with 60 hits, while Wisniewski and Meredity share the team lead with 13 doubles. … Schaub holds the team's top spot with a .551 on-base percentage, and his .769 slugging percentage is also tops on the team.
CARRYING A BIG STICK: Trinity has collected 138 extra-base hits this season, including 85 doubles, 13 triples, and 40 home runs. Meredith leads the Tigers' home run parade with 13 round-trippers this season.
• HEADED FOR HOME: The Tigers has scored 345 runs in 35 games this season, and boast five players with 30 or more runs scored this season — led by Schaub with 46 and Chaumette with 41.
• IRON MAN: Chaumette is the only Tiger to have started all 35 games this season, while Meredith joins him as the only two players to have played in every game this year.
• OFF AND RUNNING: Trinity has stolen 64 bases in 77 attempts this season, led by Chaumette and Ezra Gore with eight steals each.
• MULTI-MEN: Chaumette and Wisniewski share the team lead with 17 multiple-hit games, while Wisniewski (13) and Schaub (11) are the team-leaders in multiple-RBI games.
GOING STREAKING: Schaub has reached base safely in all 34 games he's played in this season., while Michael Goodrich has reached safely in 27 straight games. … Trinity has had five different players hit safely in 10 or more straight — including 14-game hit streaks by both Meredith and Jack Vonderhaar. Chaumette's 14-game run is the Tigers' longest current hit streak.
• ON THE MOUND: Trinity enters regional play owning a 5.14 team ERA. Thirteen of the Tigers' 15 pitchers have thrown 10 or more innings this season, led by Harrison Durow with 34.0 IP and Joseph Chavana with 31.0 IP. Nine different pitchers have made at least one start this season.
• UNBEATABLE: Joseph Chavana (5-0, 4.94 ERA), Jack Schmitt (3-0, 2.73 ERA), Cade McGahan (3-0, 5.55 ERA), Branden Hance (2-0, 6.10 ERA), and James Nittoli (2-0, 5.40) are all unbeaten this season.
• FROM THE PEN: Trinity has 28 saves this season, led by Matthew Thomas with seven. Durow, Ethan Clark, and Jack Schmitt have all recorded two saves.
THE WHIFF: Tiger hurlers have combined to strike out 294 batters and have 10 or more strikeouts from 13 of 15 pitchers.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Trinity has played 16 games decided by two runs or less, including eight one-run games. The Tigers are 4-4 in one-run games and 6-2 in two-run games. … Trinity has been held under six runs just four times this season. The Tigers are 27-4 when scoring at least six runs. • HOW THEY GOT HERE: Johns Hopkins earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional tournament as the Centennial Conference champion. The Blue Jays are seeded sixth in the regional, after posting an 11-3 overall record in 2021.
• TOURNEY VETERANS: Johns Hopkins is making its 24th appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament, including the 23rd under the direction of head coach Bob Baab. The Blue Jays have claimed four regional titles in program history (1989, 2008, 2010, 2019).
