SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their nonconference showdown at Grinnell sitting at 7-5-2 overall, including 3-3-2 in conference play.
• LAST ACTION: Saint Mary’s got second-half goals from Megan Trindle (Castle Rock, Colo.) and Samantha Munson (Plain City, Utah), and an eight-save shutout from Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) en route to a 2-0, nonconference win over UW-Stevens Point Sunday in Stevens Point, Wis.
• ON THE ROAD, AGAIN: Wednesday’s game at Grinnell is the fourth straight road game for the Cardinals, who are 2-4-0 away from Ochrymowycz Field this season. On the flip side, Saint Mary’s is 9-2-4 in its last 15 home games — including 4-1-2 this season.
• STEPPING OUT: The Cardinals will step out of conference play for the final time with Wednesday’s nonconference game at Grinnell. SMU is 4-2-0 in its six nonconference games thus far this season.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s four goals in last weekend’s wins over Bethel and UW-Stevens Point came from four different players — Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.) and Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.) vs. Bethel and Trindle and Munson against UW-Stevens Point.
• STREAK-SNAPPER: The Cardinals’ 3-0 loss to St. Olaf last Wednesday snapped their season-high five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2). The Cardinals rebounded from that loss to the Oles with back-to-back wins over Bethel (2-1) and UW-Stevens Point (2-0) and are now 5-1-2 in their last seven games.
• THROWING UP ZEOES: Ten of Saint Mary’s 14 games have been decided by shutout. The Cardinals have beaten UM-Morris (3-0), Lawrence (2-0), Gustavus (1-0), UW-Stout (1-0), and UW-Stevens Point (2-0), while falling to Wartburg (1-0), Carleton (2-0), Saint Benedict (3-0), and St. Olaf (3-0), and tying Augsburg (0-0). … SMU’s wins over UM-Morris and Lawrence marked the second straight season in which the Cardinals opened the season with back-to-back shutout wins.
• NO GOALS: Saint Mary’s 0-0 tie against Augsburg last Saturday was its third 0-0 tie in the last two seasons. The Cardinals battled both Saint Benedict and St. Scholastica to 0-0 draws a year ago.
• NAILBITERS: Seven of SMU’s last nine games have been decided by one goal or less — the Cardinals dropped a 2-1 decision to Luther on Sept. 21, battled St. Catherine to a 1-1 draw three days later, beat Gustavus (1-0), Concordia (2-1), UW-Stout (1-0), and tied Augsburg (0-0) — before falling to St. Olaf 3-0 last Wednesday.
• CAREER FIRSTS: The Cardinals have had four players record their first collegiate goals this season — the most recent off the foot of Munson against UW-Stout on Oct. 5. Along with Munson’s tally, Malerie Williams (Osseo, Minn.) netted her first as a Cardinal against St. Catherine on Sept. 24, and Ella Lahart (Sherwood, Ore.) and Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.) both recorded their first goals in a Cardinal uniform against UM-Morris on Sept. 1.
• LEADERS OF THE PACK: With their goals against Bethel last Saturday, Skoruppa and McKinney moved into a tie with Haddy Falkman (Waconia, Minn.) for the team lead in goals with three. … Munson is next up with two goals, while Trindle, Williams, Lahart, and Kaley Manglitz (Onalaska, Wis.) own SMU’s other four goals.
• LENDING A HAND: Dakota Leonard (Lincolnshire, Ill.) collected her third and fourth assists of the season against Bethel last Saturday, pushing her past Lauren Ashe (Beaverton, Ore.) and into the team lead in assists. Ashe is second with three helpers, followed by Falkman with two, while McKinney, Skoruppa, and Williams have also collected an assist this season.
• POINT PRODUCER: Along with her team-leading three goals, Falkman also leads the team in points with eight (3 G, 2 A), one in front of both McKinney (3 G, 1 A) and Skoruppa (3 G, 1 A). Munson (2 G, 0 A) and Leonard (0 G, 4 A) are next up with four points, followed by Williams (1 G, 1 A), and Ashe (0 G, 3 A) with three each.
• MULTIPLE-POINTS: Falkman’s two-goal effort against Concordia on Oct. 1 marked the second time in her career that she has scored two goals in a game. Along with her two-goal game, Falkman also owns a multiple-assist effort, picking up helpers on two of SMU’s three goals against UM-Morris on Sept. 1. … Leonard and Ashe have both picked up their first collegiate two-assist games this season. Leonard assisted on both SMU goals against Bethel last Saturday, while Ashe collected two helpers against Concordia on Oct. 1. … Skoruppa posted her first career three-point game with a goal and an assist against UM-Morris on Sept. 1.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) has appeared in 13 games of SMU’s 14 games in goal — including 11 starts — owning a 1.14 goals-against-average and .831 save percentage. … Nguyen picked up her fourth shutout of the season, and 13th of her collegiate career, with five saves against Augsburg on Oct. 8. … Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) has appeared in four games (185:05 minutes) — including two starts — and has not allowed a goal, stopping all 13 shots she’s faced, while Megan Nadal (Chino, Calif.) stopped seven of the eight shots she faced in her lone appearance in goal (45:00 minutes).
• BUSY NIGHT: Nguyen made a career-high 12 saves in SMU’s 1-1 tie against St. Catherine on Sept. 24. It was the second time this season the senior has stopped 10 or more shots in a game, having posted a 10-save effort against Saint Benedict on Sept. 17. … Nguyen has now made 10 or more saves in each of the Cardinals’ last two meetings against St. Catherine, owning 10 saves in last season’s 2-1 win over the Wildcats.
• WEEKLY HONOR: Fueled by her career-high 12-save effort against St. Catherine last Saturday, Nguyen was named MIAC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 19-25. It was the second time in her career that the senior earned the conference’s weekly honor.
• GOALKEEPING FIRSTS: Peckosh stopped a career-high eight shots in racking up career shutout No. 1 against UW-Stevens Point last Sunday. … Peckosh made her first collegiate start against UW-Stout on Oct. 5, stopping both Blue Devil shots she faced in 45:00 of play, while making her first appearance in a Cardinal uniform on Sept. 17, making three saves in 22 minutes of relief in SMU’s 3-0 loss to Saint Benedict. … Nadal made her first collegiate start on Sept. 21 against Luther, stopping seven first-half shots.
• AS A TEAM: The Cardinals have scored 11 of their 14 goals this season in the second half. … Saint Mary’s opponents own a 180-145 advantage in shot attempts through 14 games — including 98-61 in shots on goal. … SMU recorded season-highs in goals (3), assists (3), points (9), shots (23), and shots on goal (11) in its 3-0, season-opening win over UM-Morris on Sept. 1.
• CLOSE CALLS: With their 2-1 win over Concordia on Oct. 1, the Cardinals have now won four straight against the Cobbers — all by one goal. In fact, each of the last seven meetings between the two teams have been settled by one goal or less, with SMU going 4-2-1 in those seven contests.
• A YEAR AGO: The Cardinals closed out the 2021 season with a 7-3-1 record in MIAC play and a 13-5-2 overall record — reaching the MIAC Tournament semifinals, where they dropped a 3-2 decision to second-seeded Saint Benedict. … The Cardinals’ seven conference wins are the most since 1995, when the Cardinals went 7-2-1, while SMU’s 13 overall victories are the most since the 2005 team finished 13-5-0. … Saint Mary’s 10-1-1 start to the season was its best start since opening the 1991 season 11-1-0. That 1991 team went on to finish 14-4-0 and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament, falling to UC-San Diego in the opening round. … The Cardinals also opened the 1988 season 11-1-0 — it’s the best 12-game start in program history.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The NCAA implemented a new rule beginning with the 2022 that will eliminate all overtimes in regular-season games. Games that are deadlocked following the scheduled 90 minute will go in the books as ties. Once in post-season, if a game is tied following regulation, there will be two, 10-minute overtime periods — with no golden goal — followed by a shootout if the game is still tied.

GRINNELL PIONEERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Pioneers head into their final nonconference game of the season against Saint Mary’s sporting an impressive 7-1-4 record, including a 5-0-1 mark in Midwest Conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Tali Berk scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 35th minute, as Grinnell slipped past Lawrence 2-1 last Saturday in Appleton, Wis., to remain unbeaten in Midwest Conference play.
• ON A ROLL: With their 2-1 victory over Lawrence last Saturday, Grinnell pushed its unbeaten streak to nine straight (6-0-3). The Pioneers have not lost since dropping a 4-0 decision to Carleton on Sept. 10. … Grinnell's nine-match unbeaten string is the longest since the 2008 season, as is the Pioneers’ 5-0-1 mark to start the MWC slate.
• SUCCESS ON THE ROAD: Grinnell is unbeaten on the road this season, sporting a perfect 4-0-0 record. The Pioneers are 3-1-4 in eight home contests this season.
• NAILBITERS: Seven of Grinnell’s 12 games this season have been decided by one goal or less. The Pioneers are 3-0-4 in those seven games — beating Coe (1-0), Beloit (1-0), and Lawrence (2-1), while tying the University of Dubuque (0-0), Nebraska Wesleyan (1-1), Knox (0-0), and Luther (2-2).
• FINDING THE BACK OF THE NET: The Pioneers have scored 18 goals through 12 games and have gotten at least one goal from 10 different players. Jane March leads the team with four goals, one more than Jill Paladino and Tori Thomas, while Carlie Duus has netted a pair of goals. Berk, Giada Bambi, Reese Komsthoeft, Keiko Smith, Gia Sundaram, and Kate Nakamura own Grinnell’s other six goals.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Bambi owns the team lead in assists with three, followed by Berk and Komsthoeft with two each. Paladino, Smith, and Sundaram have all collected one helper.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Fueled by her team-leading four goals, March leads the Pioneers with eight points, one more than Paladino. Thomas is third with six points, followed by Bambi with five, and Berg, Komsthoeft, and Duus with four each.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Grinnell has used four different goalkeepers through 12 games this season, with Elinor Arneson seeing the brunt of the action. Arneson boasts a 1.10 goals-against-average and .738 save percentage in 10 starts, while Valeriya Woodard stopped all four shots she faced in her lone start, and Bethany McKinney posted two saves in 45:00 of work. Maddie Beltrano has also played 45:00 in goal, but did not face a shot. … Arneson has stopped 31 of the 42 shots she’s faced and owns four shutouts.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Grinnell holds a 153-113 advantage in shots attempted, including a 95-48 edge in shots on goal. … The Pioneers have scored 11 of their 18 goals in the first half. GC has outscored its opponents 11-6 in the first half and 7-5 after the break. … Grinnell scored a season-high four goals in beating Illinois College 4-2 on Sept. 24, while surrendering a season-high four goals in its lone loss, a 4-0 decision to Carleton on Sept. 10.
