WINONA, Minn. — Despite scoring more goals in Saturday's matchup against Hamline than in their last 10 games combined, it wasn't enough for the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team to secure a win against Hamline.
Â
Saint Mary's rallied from a 2-1 deficit, but surrendered what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 71st minute, as the Pipers dealt the Cardinals a 3-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback Saturday afternoon at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
Garrett Jackson (West Linn, Ore.) decided to give the Cardinals an early edge by knocking one past Hamline goalkeeper Luke Rimington — with an assist from
Cerim Palislamovic (Jacksonville, Fla.) — in the seventh minute of the game.
Â
The Cardinals' 1-0 lead was short-lived, however, as Hamline's Logan Weller beat SMU goalkeeper
Connor Petrich (Arden Hills, Minn.) in the 23rd minute, tying the score 1-1.
Â
Three minutes later, Robert Cooper found the back of the net again for the Pipers, giving Hamline a 2-1 lead, which they carried with them into the break.Â
Â
The Cardinals came back from halftime ready to even the score.
Jacob Clements (Holmen, Wis.) netted the second goal for the Cardinals in the 51st minute, with assists from Palislamovic and
Marshall Briggs (Phoenix, Ariz.) to tie the Pipers 2-2.
Â
The tight battle continued, and when it seemed that the game was heading for a tie, Cooper netted his second goal for the Pipers with 19 minutes left in regulation to take the lead for good.
Â
The Cardinals (0-7-1 MIAC, 3-10-3 overall) will return to Ochrymowycz Field on Wednesday at 7 p.m., when they host a conference matchup against Macalester.
