SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into post-season play at St. Olaf sitting at 11-5-2 overall, including closing out conference play with a 6-3-2 in conference mark.
• LAST ACTION: The Cardinals closed out their regular-season schedule on a high note, getting a late, second-half goal from Genesis Capacio (Las Vegas, Nev.) in a 1-0 victory over St. Scholastica last Saturday in Duluth, Minn.
• IN THE POSTSEASON: The Cardinals locked up their second-straight MIAC Playoff berth with their 2-0 win over Macalester last Wednesday and will enter post-season play as the No. 5 seed. SMU made its first MIAC Playoff appearance in program history a year ago, beating St. Scholastica on penalty kicks in the opening round, before falling to Saint Benedict 3-2 in the semifinals.
• BACK TO OT: Following a new NCAA rule that eliminated all overtime regular-season games this season, games tied after regulation in the MIAC Playoffs and beyond will be followed by two, 10-minute overtime periods — with no golden goal — followed by a shootout if the game is still tied.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Cardinals, who played two of their final three games on their home turf, are 10-2-4 in their last 16 home games, including 5-1-2 this season. SMU heads into Tuesday’s showdown at St. Olaf sporting a 5-4-0 road record.
• STREAKING ALONG: The Cardinals’ 1-0 win over St. Scholastica in the regular season-finale last Saturday was their sixth straight victory. After opening the season 2-4-0, SMU is now 9-1-2 in its last 12 games — bookending a five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2) with its current season-high six-game winning streak. The Cardinals’ lone loss during its current 11-game stretch was a 3-0 setback to St. Olaf on Oct. 12.
• THROWING UP ZEROS: Fourteen of Saint Mary’s 18 games have been decided by shutout — including nine of SMU’s 11 wins. The Cardinals have beaten UM-Morris (3-0), Lawrence (2-0), Gustavus (1-0), UW-Stout (1-0), UW-Stevens Point (2-0), Grinnell (2-0), Hamline (2-0), and Macalester (2-0), while falling to Wartburg (1-0), Carleton (2-0), Saint Benedict (3-0), and St. Olaf (3-0), and tying Augsburg (0-0). … SMU’s wins over UM-Morris and Lawrence marked the second straight season in which the Cardinals opened the season with back-to-back shutout wins.
• CAREER FIRSTS: The Cardinals have had five players record their first collegiate goals this season — the most recent off the foot of Dakota Leonard (Lincolnshire, Ill.) against Grinnell on Oct. 19. Along with Leonard’s tally, Samantha Munson (Plain City, Utah), Malerie Williams (Osseo, Minn.), Ella Lahart (Sherwood, Ore.), and Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.) have also scored their first goals in an SMU uniform this season.
• LEADER OF THE PACK: With her goal against Macalester last Tuesday, Haddy Falkman (Waconia, Minn.) regained the team lead in goals with five, one more than Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.). Skoruppa is third on the team with three goals, followed by Lahart, Leonard, and Munson with two each. Capacio, Williams, Megan Trindle (Castle Rock, Colo.), and Kaley Manglitz (Onalaska, Wis.) own SMU’s other four goals.
• LENDING A HAND: Leonard collected her third and fourth assists of the season against Bethel on Oct. 15, pushing her past Lauren Ashe (Beaverton, Ore.) and into the team lead in assists. Ashe and Falkman are second with three helpers, followed by Williams with two, while McKinney and Skoruppa have also collected an assist this season.
• POINT PRODUCER: Along with her team-leading five goals, Falkman also leads the team in points with 13 (5 G, 3 A), four in front of McKinney (4 G, 1 A) and five in front of Leonard (2 G, 4 A). Skoruppa is sitting fourth with seven points (3 G, 1 A), with Munson (2 G, 0 A) and Lahart (2 G, 0 A) each boasting four points.
• MULTIPLE-POINTS: Falkman’s two-goal effort against Concordia on Oct. 1 marked the second time in her career that she has scored two goals in a game. Along with her two-goal game against the Cobbers, Falkman also recorded her first multiple-assist effort, picking up helpers on two of SMU’s three goals against UM-Morris on Sept. 1, as well as her first career three-point (1 G, 1A) performance against Macalester last Tuesday. … Leonard and Ashe have both recorded their first collegiate two-assist games this season: Leonard assisted on both SMU goals against Bethel on Oct. 15, while Ashe collected two helpers against Concordia on Oct. 1. … Skoruppa posted her first career three-point game with a goal and an assist against UM-Morris on Sept. 1.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) has appeared in 17 of SMU’s 18 games in goal — including 15 starts — owning a 0.86 goals-against-average and .854 save percentage. … Nguyen picked up her sixth shutout of the season with a six-save effort against Macalester last Tuesday and did not have to make a save en route to shutout No. 7 against St. Scholastica four days later. Nguyen has now recorded 16 shutouts in her four-year career. … Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) has appeared in four games (185:05 minutes) — including two starts — and has not allowed a goal, stopping all 13 shots she’s faced, while Megan Nadal (Chino, Calif.) has stopped nine of the 10 shots she faced in her two appearance in goal (45:00 minutes).
• BUSY NIGHT: Nguyen made a career-high 12 saves in SMU’s 1-1 tie against St. Catherine on Sept. 24. It was the second time this season the senior has stopped 10 or more shots in a game, having posted a 10-save effort against Saint Benedict on Sept. 17. … Nguyen has now made 10 or more saves in each of the Cardinals’ last two meetings against St. Catherine, owning 10 saves in last season’s 2-1 win over the Wildcats.
• WEEKLY HONOR: Fueled by her career-high 12-save effort against St. Catherine last Saturday, Nguyen was named MIAC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 19-25. It was the second time in her career that the senior earned the conference’s weekly honor.
• GOALKEEPING FIRSTS: Peckosh stopped a career-high eight shots in racking up career shutout No. 1 against UW-Stevens Point on Oct. 16. … Peckosh made her first collegiate start against UW-Stout on Oct. 5, stopping both Blue Devil shots she faced in 45:00 of play, while making her first appearance in a Cardinal uniform on Sept. 17, making three saves in 22 minutes of relief in SMU’s 3-0 loss to Saint Benedict. … Nadal made her first collegiate start on Sept. 21 against Luther, stopping seven first-half shots.
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals have scored 14 of their 21 goals this season in the second half. … Saint Mary’s opponents own a 209-187 advantage in shot attempts through 18 games — including 113-84 in shots on goal. … SMU recorded season-highs in goals (3), assists (3), points (9), shots (23), and shots on goal (11) in its 3-0, season-opening win over UM-Morris on Sept. 1.
• NEW DAY, SAME OUTCOME: Saint Mary’s 2-0 victory over Macalester last Tuesday was the Cardinals’ fourth straight 2-0 victory — SMU had beaten UW-Stevens Point, Grinnell, and Hamline by that same 2-0 outcome in its previous three contests.
• CLOSE CALLS: With their 2-1 win over Concordia on Oct. 1, the Cardinals have now won four straight against the Cobbers — all by one goal. In fact, each of the last seven meetings between the two teams have been settled by one goal or less, with SMU going 4-2-1 in those seven contests.
• NO GOALS: Saint Mary’s 0-0 tie against Augsburg on Oct. 8 was its third 0-0 tie in the last two seasons. The Cardinals battled both Saint Benedict and St. Scholastica to 0-0 draws a year ago.
ST. OLAF OLES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Oles enter post-season play boasting a 9-6-1 overall record, including a 7-3-1 showing in their 11-game conference slate.
• LAST TIME OUT: St. Catherine jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held off a late St. Olaf charge in dealing the Oles a 2-1 setback in the teams’ regular-season finale last Saturday in Northfield, Minn.
• IN THE POSTSEASON: The Oles are making their sixth MIAC Playoff appearance — and their first since the 2018 season. St. Olaf has also appearance in the conference playoffs in 2004, 2012, 2013, and 2017. The Oles have yet to win an MIAC Playoff game, sitting at 0-5.
• HOME SWEET HOME: With their regular season-ending 2-1 loss to St. Catherine, St. Olaf moved to 7-3-0 on its home field. The Oles, who are playing their second straight home game when Saint Mary’s comes to town Tuesday, are just 2-3-1 away from Rolf Melby Field this season.
• NAILBITERS: Ten of St. Olaf’s 18 games this season have been decided by one goal or less, with the Oles going 5-4-1 in those 10 contests.
• SHE SHOOTS AND SCORES: Sadie Klassen has scored a team-leading nine goals this season, two more than Tessa Anderson. The duo have accounted for 16 of the Oles’ 22 goals this season. … Katie Beaudry is the only other player with more than one goal, sitting with two, while Bella Woog, Maylee Aidentaler, Reiley Prueter, and Rachel Tanner own St. Olaf’s other four goals. … Klassen scored a season-high three goals against St. Scholastic on Sept. 27.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Anderson sits atop the heap with a team-leading five assists, followed by Cat Duffy-Shaw with four. Klassen, Woog, and Marit Klagge are all sitting with two assists, with Mae Guetschow, Katie Korbas, Clara Kubis, Marissa Lindemann, and Megan Timmerman all boasting one helper.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Klassen and Anderson have both reached double-digits, with Klassen leading the way with 20 (9 G, 2 A) and Anderson sitting with 19 (7 G, 5 A). … Woog, Beaudry, and Duffy-Shaw all boast four points.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Maddie Black and Grace Sprangers have shared the goalkeeping duties this season. Sprangers owns a 1.14 goals-against-average and .682 save percentage in eight appearances (540:40 minutes), while Black has compiled a 0.81 GAA and .814 save percentage in 11 appearances (889:20). … Black has made a team-leading 35 saves, with Sprangers chipping in 15 stops. … Black has recorded four shutouts, Sprangers owns two, and the duo has combined on one other.
