WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team was looking for a repeat of their performance in Friday's 4-2 win over Augsburg when the two teams squared off again Saturday afternoon.
Unfortunately, the Auggies didn't exactly cooperate with that plan.
Augsburg scored its third power-play goal of the game with less than four minutes remaining in regulation, as the Auggies dealt the Cardinals a heartbreaking 3-2 conference setback at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
Augsburg came up with the game's first goal — and the only goal of the first period. Katie Flynn rocketed a shot past SMU goaltender
Jordan Keeley (St. Peter, Minn.) on the power play at 4:47 to gain a 1-0 advantage for the Auggies, a lead they took with them into the first break.
Six minutes into the second period, the Auggies would score again — and again it would be a power-play tally — this one coming off the stick of Jenna Gerold, extending the Augsburg lead to 2-0.
Taryn Dornseif (Somerset, Wis.) refused to let the Auggies get too comfortable with their two-goal lead, scoring for the Cardinals at 9:09 of middle period, with assists coming from
Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.) and
Anne Carmean (Blaine, Minn.), to cut Augburgs' lead in half 2-1.
The Cardinals evened the score at 2-2 less than two minutes into the third period, when
Kennedy Kraus (Kasson, Minn.) grabbed the Cardinals' second goal, off of an assist from
Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.).
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, 15 minutes later, the Auggies would take advantage of a 5-on-3 power play and seal their win. Emily Schoeberl found her way past SMU defenders and netted Augsburg's third special teams goal to seal the win.
Keeley was busy between the pipes for Saint Mary's, making a career-high 49 saves, while Dornseif's goal gives her the team lead in goals with on the year.
The Cardinals (1-3-0 MIAC, 1-7-0 overall) are up next against Gustavus, taking the ice on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
