SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s heads into its nonconference home matchup against MSOE on Saturday sitting at 4-6-1 overall, and 3-3-0 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals picked up a pair of crucial wins over Gustavus last weekend, getting a goal and two assists from Jack Campion (Crystal, Minn.) in a 4-1 win last Friday, before riding the two-goal effort from Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.) to a sweep-clinching 4-3 win over in the teams’ rematch the following evening.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Saturday’s game against MSOE is the ninth home game of the season for the Cardinals, who are 3-4-1 on their home ice this season, while going 1-2-0 away from the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• STREAKING: The Cardinals head into Saturday’s nonconference game against MSOE riding a season-high three-game winning streak. … The Cardinals’ 3-1 win over Lawrence on Nov. 22, meanwhile, snapped their season-high four-game losing streak.
• OFFENSE IN SYNC: After scoring just four goals in its four-game losing streak, the Cardinals have netted 11 during its current three-game run — including back-to-back four-goal efforts against Gustavus last weekend. … SMU’s four goals against the Gusties were the most since netting a season-best five goals in a season-opening 5-5 tie with Lake Forest on Oct. 28.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: SMU’s eight goals against Gustavus last weekend came from seven different players — including two from Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.). Trevor Schroder (Des Moines, Iowa). Jack Campion (Crystal, Minn.), Warner Young (Newberry, Mich.), Jackson Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.), Nikita Sheberov (Obninsk, Russia), and Bud Winter accounted for the other six. … With his goal vs. Gustavus, Schroder pushed his team lead to four, one more than Campion, Young, and Winter, and two in front of Tharaldson, Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.), and Sheberov.
• DOUBLING UP: Saint Mary’s has had a player score two goals in a game twice this season — Winter did it against Lake Forest on Oct. 28, while Tharaldson recorded his first collegiate two-goal game against Gustavus last Saturday.
• MULTIPLE POINTS: Campion picked up a pair of assists to go with his first-period goal against Gustavus last Friday en route to his first collegiate three-point night, while Winter picked up helpers on three of SMU’s four goals vs. the Gusties for his first career three-assist game — and third career three-point night.
• FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL: Saint Mary’s has four players who have scored their first goals in a Cardinal uniform this season. Jackson Nauss tallied his first in a Cardinal jersey last Friday vs. Gustavus; Westbrook scored his first SMU goal vs. UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 11; Tushie netted his first SMU goal against Lake Forest on Oct. 29; and Campion delivered his first career goal vs. Hamline on Nov. 5.
• LENDING A HAND: Poellinger and Tharaldson share the team lead in assists with six, one more than Winter, and three in front of Young, Tushie, and Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.).
• POINT PRODUCERS: Poellinger, Winter, and Tharaldson all enter Saturday’s game against MSOE sitting atop the Cardinal points heap with eight, followed by Young with six and Campion with five. … Saint Mary’s has gotten at least one point from 18 different players.
• WEEKLY HONORS: After scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists against Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29, Poellinger was named the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Oct. 31.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Saint Mary’s has used three different goalies this season. Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) has stopped 244 of the 270 shots he’s faced in eight appearances en route to a 3.24 GAA and a .904 save percentage, while Connor Close (Des Moines, Iowa) boasts a 5.34 GAA, .831 save % and has made 69 saves in his three starts. A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) has appeared in two games and owns a boasts a 7.29 GAA and .812 save %. … Sankner has stopped 30 or more shots nine times in his career — including four times this season. … Sankner delivered a career-high 45-save effort against Augsburg on Nov. 18. … Close recorded a career-high 36 saves against Lake Forest on Oct. 29.
• PITCHING A SHUTOUT: Sankner kicked out all 31 shots he faced in the Cardinals’ 4-0 win over Bethel on Feb. 19, 2022 en route to his first collegiate shutout. The 4-0 win was also Saint Mary’s first shutout victory of the season.
• BIG OFFENSIVE NIGHT: The Cardinals’ five goals against Lake Forest on Oct. 28 were the most since SMU netted six against Bethel on March 6, 2021.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 5-5 tie against Lake Forest on Oct. 28 was their fourth OT contest over the past two seasons.
• CLEAN SHEET: Saint Mary’s was not whistled for a penalty in its 3-1 win over Lawrence on Nov. 22. All told, there were just two penalties called in the nonconference contest, both against the Vikings.
• SCORING FIRST: Saint Mary’s scored first in both games against Gustavus last weekend, pushing its record to 3-1-0 when netting the game’s first goal, while going 1-5-1 when its opponent scores first. … The Cardinals were 6-1-0 when netting the game’s first goal a year ago, while going 2-13-1 when their opponent nets the game’s first goal.
• BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: It was a tale of late-game heroics in SMU’s conference-opening series against Hamline on Nov. 4-5. HU scored two goals in the game’s final 3:33 en route to a 3-2 win over the Cardinals in the first game on Nov. 4, with SMU turning the tables in the rematch, scoring twice in a 33-second span in the final two minutes of regulation en route to a 2-1 victory the following evening.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Saint Mary’s has scored 10 goals in the first period, six in the second, and 11 in the third. SMU has been outscored 12-10 in the opening period, 15-6 in the second, and 16-11 in the third. … Saint Mary’s is 6 of 42 on the power play (14.3 %), while killing off 38 of its opponents 49 power-play opportunities (79.2 %).
MSOE RAIDERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Raiders head into their nonconference matchup against Saint Mary’s sitting at 8-4-0 overall
• LAST TIME OUT: The Raiders got two goals from both Gramm McCormack and Christian Sabin, as MSOE rolled past St. Olaf 5-2 Friday at the St. Olaf Ice Arena in Northfield, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Saturday’s game at Saint Mary’s is the second straight road game for the Raiders, who have played just three of their first 12 games away from Kern Center this season. MSOE is 6-3-0 at home, while going 2-1-0 on the road.
• STREAKING: The Raiders snapped a two-game losing streak with their 5-2 win over St. Olaf on Friday. On the flip side, seven of MSOE’s eight wins have come via three- and four-game winning streaks.
• AGAINST THE MIAC: Saturday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the fifth contest against an opponent from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Raiders are now 4-0-0 against the MIAC this season, beating St. Scholastica (1-0), Saint John’s (3-2, 2-0), and St. Olaf (5-2).
• OFFENSIVE LEADER: MSOE has scored 42 goals through 12 games and has gotten at least one goal from 14 different players. Christian Sabin leads the team with eight goals, two more than Kyle Herbster. McCormack, Matt Hanewall, Jackson Hughes, and Kevin Paganini are all sitting tied for third with four goals each.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: McCormack leads the Raiders with 12 assists, one more than Herbster, with Sabin chipping in eight helpers and Chris Belke, Matt Hanewall, and Carson Jones adding six each.
• POINT PRODUCTION: MSOE boasts four players who have eclipsed the 10-point mark already this season. Herbster and McCormack lead the team with 17 points, with Sabin adding 16 and Hanewall owning 10. … Twenty different Raiders have recorded at least one point this season.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Austin Schwab and Nick Stofcheck have shared the goaltending duties for the Raiders this season. Schwab has compiled a 3.17 goals-against-average and .902 save percentage in eight starts, while Stofcheck boasts a 2.72 GAA and .877 save % in four starts. … Schwab has kicked out 211 shots — including a season-high 36-save effort against Saint John’s on Nov. 25 — with Stofcheck chipping in 93 saves.
• BY THE NUMBERS: MSOE has scored 16 power-play goals on 72 chances (22.2 %) and have killed off 53 of its opponents 72 PP opportunities. … The Raiders are averaging 30.0 shots-per-game, compared to their opponents’ 28.4 spg average. … MSOE has outscored its opponents 12-10 in the first period and 12-7 in the third, but have been outscored 19-18 in the middle frame. … MSOE set season-highs in goals (8), assists (14), and points (22) in an 8-5 win over Lake Foreston Nov. 5. On the flip side, fourth-ranked Adrian’s eight goals in last Saturday’s 8-4 win were the most allowed by MSOE this season.
