WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's men's tennis team gave Saint John's all it could handle Saturday afternoon, only to come up short in the end, falling to the unbeaten Johnnies 6-3 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
Â
"It was a close match from start-to-finish," said Saint Mary's men's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg. "(Saint John's) was just a little deeper than we were."
Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) and
Brandon Kurilla (Hastings, Minn.) combined for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, but the Johnnies dominated the other two doubles matches — dropping just four games — to grab a 2-1 lead heading into the singles portion of the conference mathcup.
Â
Janssen outlasted SJU's Peyton Fischer for a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-3 victory at No. 2 singles and
E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.) added a straight-set win at No. 2, only to have the Johnnies take the other four singles matches in straight sets to pull away for the win.
Â
The Cardinals (0-2 MIAC, 4-5 overall) are right back in action Saturday night, hosting Bethany Lutheran in a 6 p.m. nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
