• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their home conference doubleheader against Macalester sitting at 12-11 overall, including a 4-2 showing in conference play.

• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals bounced back from a 6-2, Game 1 loss, scoring in each of the first six innings of the nightcap en route to an 8-6 win and a split of their conference doubleheader against Bethel Wednesday in Arden Hills, Minn.

• HOME SWEET HOME: After playing 21 of their first 23 games on the road, the Cardinals’ doubleheader against Macalester marks the first two of six straight home games for Saint Mary’s, which finished 14-8 at Max Molock Field a year ago.

• LEADING THE CHARGE: Trevon VanEgtern (La Crosse, Wis.)  leads the Cardinals with a .329 batting average, going 27-for-82 through 23 games, while fellow regulars Brandon Merfeld (La Crosse, Wis.) and Cameron Weber (Holmen, Wis.) are also hitting above .300, sitting at .323 and .310, respectively.

… As a team, the Cardinals are hitting .261 (190-for-729).

• ON THE RUN: The Cardinals have scored 124 runs in 23 games, with Merfeld and Weber leading the way, scoring 22 and 21 runs, respectively. VanEgtern (14), Tanner Bauman (Willmar, Minn. / 13), Tyler O’Brien (Belle Plaine, Minn. / 12), and Daniel Marxen (Maple Grove, Minn. / 10) have also scored 10 or more runs this season.

• HIT PARADE: The Cardinals have five players who have recorded at least 20 hits this season, led by VanEgtern with 27 and Weber with 26. O’Brien and Marxen are third on the team with 22 hits, followed by Merfeld with 21. … The Cardinals boast six players who share the team lead in multiple-hit games with six ­— O’Brien, Merfeld, VanEgtern, Marxen, Weber, and Ben Coons (Kimberly, Wis.). … SMU had three players collect three hits in Game 2 against Bethel on Wednesday and have now had six players record three hits in a game.

• EXTRA, EXTRA: Saint Mary’s has belted out 58 extra-base hits through 23 games, including 40 doubles, four triples, and 14 home runs. … O’Brien and Merfeld share the team lead in doubles with seven, followed by Weber and Marxen with six. … Weber leads the team with two triples, with O’Brien and Coyle accounting for the other two.

• BOMBS AWAY: With their two home runs against Bethel on Wednesday, the Cardinals pushed their home run total to 14. Marxen leads the way with four HRs, one more than VanEgtern, and two in front of Mason Coyle (Madison, Wis.) and Jake Mercado (Belle Plaine, Minn.). Coons, Weber, and Merfeld own the Cardinals’ other three round-trippers. … All seven SMU home run hitters this season have belted their first career HRs this season.

• DRIVING ‘EM HOME: As a team, Saint Mary’s has driven in 108 runs through 23 games, led by Marxen with 20 and VanEgtern with 15. Weber, O’Brien and Arndt all boast 11 RBIs … Arndt delivered a career-high five RBIs in Saint Mary’s 9-7 win over Grove City on Feb. 28, while Marxen — who leads the team with five multiple-RBI games — has driven in a career-best four runs twice this season. 

• STREAKING ALONG: Arndt, O’Brien, and Coons have all put together season-high eight-game hitting streaks this season, but no Cardinal has an active hit streak longer than two games. … Marxen has reached base safely in each of SMU’s last seven contests. 

• ON THE MOUND: Saint Mary’s has used 12 different pitchers through its first 23 games — and boasts seven hurlers who have logged more than 10 innings. Luke Gilbertson (Windom, Minn.) leads the Cardinal staff with 36 1/3 innings pitched, followed closely by Jordan Zabel (Elgin, Minn.) and Addison Hochevar (Lake Geneva, Wis.) with 30 1/3 IP and 27 2/3 IP, respectively. … Andrew Fischer (La Crosse, Wis. / 3-0, 6.00 ERA) leads the staff in appearances with eight, one more Justin Haugo (Springfield, Minn. / 1-1, 4.72 ERA), and two up on Gilbertson (2-2, 4.71 ERA), Hochevar (1-3, 5.53 ERA), and Dylan Westcott (Holmen, Wis. / 0-1, 6.43 ERA). … Hochevar and Gilbertson lead the staff with six starts.

• COMPLETING WHAT THEY STARTED: Gilbertson and Jordan Zabel (Elgin, Minn. / 2-3, 4.4 ERA) tossed back-to-back complete games in SMU’s spring trip-ending split against Northwestern on March 5. Gilbertson allowed four runs on seven hits in a 6-4 win, while Zabel surrendered five runs on six hits in suffering the 5-1, Game 2 loss. The complete game was the first of Zabel’s career, while Gilbertson owns four career complete games.

• PITCHING FIRSTS: Timmy Smith picked up his first collegiate pitching win and Westcott earned his first save as a Cardinal in SMU’s 14-10 win over Concordia on Feb. 27. Smith allowed three runs – only one of which was earned — on five hits in four innings of relief, while Wescott worked a scoreless ninth. Westcott picked up save No. 2 the following day, working a one-run ninth in SMU’s 9-7 win over Grove City. … Fischer set Wheaton down in order in the bottom of the seventh to preserve SMU’s 3-2 win and in his first save in a Cardinal uniform.

• SAVING THE DAY: Westcott has recorded four of the Cardinals’ six pitching saves, with Fischer collecting the other three — including getting the game-ending strikeout with the bases loaded in Wednesday’s 8-6, Game 2 win over Bethel. 

• FANNING THE FLAMES: The SMU pitching staff has struck out 145 batters through 23 games, led by Hochevar with 28, followed by Gilbertson (23), Zabel (21), Fischer (19), Haugo (17), and Smith (15). … Hochevar struck out a season-high eight batters in SMU’s 3-2 win over Wheaton on March 22.

• WALKING OFF: Saint Mary’s and Luther both claimed 7-6, walk-off victories in their nonconference doubleheader split on March 13. Luther got a two-run scoring double to cap a three-run seventh inning in winning the opener, while VanEgtern laced a run-scoring single in the bottom of the 11th to give Saint Mary’s the win in Game 2.

• THIS AND THAT: The Cardinals have scored six or more runs in nine of their 12 wins — including a season-high 16-run showing in dropping Rose-Hulman 16-7 on March 3. On the flip side, Saint Mary’s has been held to five runs or less in nine of its 11 losses. … Saint Mary’s has scored in the first inning in six of its 23 games — winning all six. … SMU is 10-2 when leading after six innings, but are only 2-9 when trailing heading into the seventh frame. … Saint Mary’s has scored four or more runs in an inning five times — posting five, four-run innings, as well as a season-high eight-run second inning in its 16-7 win over Rose-Hulman on March 3. … Saint Mary’s has played two extra-inning games this season — winning both. SMU beat Luther 7-6 in 11 innings on March 13, before adding its 5-4, 10-inning victory over St. Olaf on April 9.

• FOR THE RECORD: The Scots enter their doubleheader against Saint Mary’s sitting at 4-13 overall, while still searching for their first conference win, having been swept by both Bethel and Gustavus in their first four MIAC contests.

• LAST TIME OUT: Macalester has been off since April 11, when they collected a 10-9, 10-inning victory over Northwestern (Minn.). The Scots scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull even with the Eagles 9-9, before scoring game-winning run on a Northwestern error.

• ROAD WARRIORS: Macalester has played 13 of its first 17 games this season on the road. The Scots are just 1-3 at home, while going 3-10 away from Nicholson Field in St. Paul, Minn.

• STREAKING ALONG: Macalester snapped a season-opening three-game losing streak with a 15-5 win over Carthage on March 14, but promptly lost its next four before beating Kalamazoo 7-2 on March 19. The Scots followed up that victory by winning just one of its next seven, with their 10-9 win over Northwestern ending a four-game slide.

• AT THE PLATE: Matt Mukai enters Macalester’s DH against Saint Mary’s hitting a team-high .391. Mukai is one of six Scot regulars who are batting above .300, being joined by Matt Odom (.357), Bownman Wingard (.345), Michael Moreno (.340), Joe Margolis (.339), and Kenny Rodriguez (.300).

• RUNNING WILD: Macalester has scored 108 runs through 17 games, led by Odom with 16, and Moreno, Margolis, and Rodriguez with 11 each. … Moreno and Waddell, and Moreno have all scored a single-game high three runs this season.

• HIT PARADE: Odom leads the Scot offense with 20 hit, one more than Margolis and two in front of Mukai. Rodriguez (15), Lian Lincoln (14), Hayes Waddell (10), and Wingard (10) have also recorded 10 or more hits this season. … Odom, Mukai, and Moreno share the team lead with six multiple-hit games. … Mukai owns the Scots’ single-game season-high with four hits against Carthage on March 14. 

• EXTRA, EXTRA: Macalester has recorded 61 extra-base hits this season, including 42 doubles, six triples, and 13 home runs. Odom and Wingard lead the Scots with five doubles each, followed by Margolis, Mukai, Moreno, Rodriguez, and Waddell with four apiece. … Rodriguez has hit a team-leading two triples, with Moreno, Waddell, Caidan Moore, and Anushka Fernando accounting for the other four.

• GOING DEEP: Odom leads the Scots’ home run brigade with four, one more than Moreno and two in front of Moore. Rodriguez, Waddell, Mukai, and Charlie Burton have hit Macalester’s other four round-trippers.

• DRIVING ‘EM IN: The Scots boast three players who have driven in 10 or more runs, led by Odom with 20. Mukai and Moreno have also collected 10 or more RBIs, sitting at 13 and 11, respectively. … Odom and Moreno have each recorded five multiple-RBI games this season. … Odom has driven in five runs in a game twice this season — vs. Wesleyan (Conn.) on March 17 and v. Northwestern on April 11.

• STREAKING ALONG: Rodriguez put together an eight-game hitting streak earlier this season, but no Scot has an active hit streak longer than two. … Three Scots reached base safely in 10 or more games earlier this season — Mukai reached in 12 straight games, while Rodriguez and Margolis reached base safely in 11 and 10 games, respectively. 

• ON THE MOUND: The Scots have used 20 different pitchers this season, with five logging 10 or more hours through 17 games. Thomas Windels (2-2, 4.71 ERA) leads the Macalester staff with 21.0 IP, followed by Quinn Hodgman (0-1, 11.12 ERA) with 12.0 IP, Declain Elia (0-1, 1.29 ERA) with 14.0 IP, Peter Aspholm (0-1, 4.26 ERA) with 12 2/3 IP, and Will Moscato )1-3, 10.97 ERA) with 10 2/3 IP. … Windels, Moscato, Hodgman, Elisa, Aspholm, and Joey Clark (0-1, 10.80 ERA) have all made a team-leading five appearances, while Windels has made a team-high five starts.
