SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference rematch against St. Olaf on Saturday sitting at 4-9-1 overall, including a 1-5-1 mark in conference play.
• LAST NIGHT: Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) scored late in the third period, lifting the Cardinals to a 2-2 overtime tie against the Oles at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena. SMU captured the extra conference point with a 2-1 win in the shootout.
• ROAD SUCCESS: Three of the Cardinals’ four wins this season have come on the road. Saint Mary’s is sitting at 1-4-1 on its home ice this year, while sporting a 3-5-0 mark away from the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• ON A ROLL: With their overtime victory over UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 7 and 2-2 tie vs. St. Olaf on Friday, the Cardinals pushed their unbeaten streak to four (3-0-1). SMU swept Lawrence 3-0 and 8-0 on Dec. 9-10 prior to its OT victory over the Pointers on Jan. 7.
• WORKING OVERTIME: SMU’s 2-2 tie against St. Olaf on Friday was its second straight overtime game — and its third OT contest of the season. Along with Friday’s 2-2 stalemate vs. St. Olaf, the Cardinals also own a 2-1 overtime win over UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 7 and a 3-2 OT loss to Lake Forest on Oct. 29. … Saint Mary’s played four overtime games a year ago, finishing 1-1-2 in those four contests.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Kingston and Taryn Dornself (Somerset, Wis.) heads into Saturday’s rematch with St. Olaf leading the team in goals with four, one more than Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.), and two up on Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, Wis.), Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.), Leah Parker (Hudson, Wis.), and Jenna Kurkowski (North Branch, Minn.). … SMU’s 28 goals have come from 16 different players. …
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Saint Mary’s has had five players score their first collegiate goals this season. Jordy Wyant (Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored career-goal No. 1 against St. Olaf on Friday; Teagan Phillips (Oregon, Wis.) and Taverie Sherner (Maple Grove, Minn.) netted goal No. 1 as a Cardinal against Augsburg on Nov. 18; Dornself’s first-period goal against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 was her first as a Cardinal; and Parker netted her first as a Cardinal against Hamline on Nov. 12. … Saint Mary’s had 10 players net their first collegiate goals a year ago.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: SMU’s eight goals in its 8-0 win over Lawrence on Dec. 10 were scored by eight different players — Dornself, Parker, Braun, Kingston, Kurkowski, Katie Devine (Glencoe, Ill.), Elle Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.), and Anne Carmean (Spring Lake Park, Minn.).
• SPREADING THE WEALTH II: Saint Mary’s 10 points in its 4-2 win over Augsburg on Nov. 18 came from 10 different players: Phillips, Sherner, Urlaub, and Polzin scored goals, while Kennedy Kraus (Kasson, Minn.), Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Minn.), Hegdahl, Dornself, Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.), and Parker all had assists.
• LENDING A HAND: Polzin enters Saturday’s matchup against St. Olaf leading the Cardinals with four assists, while Carmean, Pierpont, Urlaub, and Kraus all have three. Dornself, Kingston, Parker, Devine, Hegdahl, Ausman, and Wyant have all collected a pair of helpers.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Dornself, Kingston, and Polzin sit atop the team’s points race with six, one more than Urlaub, and two up on Parker, Carmean, Kraus, and Pierpont.
• DOUBLING UP: SMU had four players post multiple-point games against Lawrence on Dec. 10. Devine, Kurkowski, and Kingston all had a goal and an assist, while Polzin had two assists.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan Keeley (St. James, Minn.) and Celeste Rimstad (Richfield, Minn.) have shared the goaltending duties for the Cardinals this season. Keeley has stopped 301 of the 335 shots she’s faced in 10 starts and owns a 2.58 goals-against-average and .926 save percentage, while Rimstad has recorded 108 saves in her first five appearances as a Cardinal and sports a 2.12 GAA and .914 save %. … Keeley has stopped 30 or more shots in six of her 10 starts this season. … Rimstad’s 40-save showing vs. Hamline Nov. 12 was a career-high.
• THROWING UP BLANKS: Keeley and Rimstad both collected shutouts against Lawrence on Dec. 9-10. Keeley kicked out all 15 shots she faced on Dec. 9 for her first shutout of the season, and fourth of her collegiate career, while Rimstad stopped all 13 shots in the rematch the following afternoon for career shutout No. 1.
• BACK-TO-BACK GOOSE EGGS: The Cardinals 3-0 and 8-0 wins over Lawrence on Dec. 9-10 mark the first time since the 2003-04 season in which SMU has posted back-to-back shutouts. SMU did it three times during the 2003-04 season — beating Concordia (3-0) and St. Catherine (5-0); Bethel (3-0 and 5-0); and Hamline 8-0 and 5-0).
• CAREER NIGHTS: Keeley stopped a career-high 49 shots in SMU’s 3-2 loss to Augsburg on Nov. 19. The 49 saves were four more than her previous career-best and the most by a Cardinal goalie since Ary Ziakas stopped 55 against Gustavus on Jan. 28, 2022.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: Saint Mary’s finished with 121 shots on goal against Lawrence on Dec. 9-10, while holding the Vikings to a combined 28. SMU outshot Lawrence 28-1 in the first period on Dec. 9 and boasted a 26-5 edge in shots in the second period on Dec. 10.
• MAKING THEIR MARK: The Cardinals’ 59 shots on goal against Lawrence on Dec. 9 rank No. 6 all-time, while their 62 shots the following afternoon are tied for No. 3 all-time. The program-record for shots on goal in a game is 80 against St. Olaf on Nov. 11, 2000.
• TOUGH STRETCH: The Cardinals’ matchup against No. 1-ranked Gustavus last weekend marked the ninth and 10th straight games against teams appearing the USCHO.com Poll. Lake Forest, Hamline, and Augsburg have all received votes in the USCHO.com Top 15, while SMU has also faced then-No. 5 UW-Eau Claire (now ranked No. 9) and then-No. 7 UW-River Falls (currently ranked No. 2).
• BY THE NUMBERS: SMU has scored six goals in the first period, while netting 11 goals in the second and 10 in the third. On the flip side, the Cardinals’ opponents have scored 10 times in the first period, 14 times in the second, 12 times in the third. … SMU’s four third-period goals against Lawrence on Dec. 10 were a single-period season-high. … Saint Mary’s is 4-for-53 on the power-play, while killing off 41 of its opponents’ 51 PP opportunities. … The Cardinals recorded season-highs in goals (8), assists (8), points (16), and shots on goal (62) against Lawrence on Dec. 10.
ST. OLAF OLES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Oles head home for Game 2 against Saint Mary’s boasting a 7-5-1 overall record, including a 3-3-1 showing through the first seven games of the conference slate.
• LAST NIGHT: St. Olaf held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in its conference game against Saint Mary’s Friday evening, but could not hold those leads, settling for a 2-2 tie with the Cardinals at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena in Winona, Minn.
• BACK ON TRACK: The Oles’ 3-1 win over UW-Superior on Dec. 9 snapped their season-high four-game losing streak. After being outscored 21-3 during its four-game slide — including back-to-back shutout losses to Augsburg on Dec. 2-3 — St. Olaf erupted for 10 goals in sweeping the Yellowjackets on Dec. 9-10.
• HOME SWEET HOME: St. Olaf has played seven home games this season, compiling a 3-3-1 record, while sitting at 4-2-1 in its six games away from the St. Olaf Ice Arena.
• STINGY DEFENSE: The Oles have held their opponents to one goal or less in six of their seven wins — the lone exception, a 4-3 win over Bethel on Nov. 12. St. Olaf’s other six wins have come against UW-Stevens Point (2-1), Northland (5-1), Bethel (4-0), Hamline (2-0), and UW-Superior (3-1, 7-1). … On the flip side, St. Olaf has been held to one goal or less in four of its five losses
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Molly Terebayza and Solvei Berg-Messerole have accounted for nearly half of the Oles’ goals this season, with Terebayza scoring a team-leading eight goals, one more than Berg-Messerole. Sophie McBane and Iona Welsch have each scored three times, followed by Grace Lankas, Lauren Spear, and Zephryn Jager with two. … Terebayza scored a season-high three goals in St. Olaf’s 7-1 win over UW-Superior on Dec. 10.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Lankas has amassed a team-leading nine assists, one more than Berg-Messerole, and four in front of Lexie Ligday. … St. Olaf has gotten at least one helper from 20 different players. … Berg-Messerole collected a season-high four assists against UW-Superior on Dec. 10.
• POINT PRODUCTION: The Oles boast three players who have collected at least 10 points through 13 games — Berg-Messerole leads the way with 15 points, followed by Terebayza with 12 and Lankas with 11. … Berg-Messerole had a hand in six of St. Olaf’s seven goals against UW-Superior on Dec. 10, scoring twice and assisting on four others.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: The Oles have used three different goalies this season, led by Hannah Fritz, who has compiled a 3.33 goals-against-average and .863 save percentage in nine appearances (450:21 minutes). Devon Cole owns a 1.15 GAA and .943 save % in five games played (208:54) and Carley Tuman boasts a 1.63 GAA and .922 save % in four games (179:21). … Fritz has made a team-high 158 saves, followed by Tuman with 78 and Cole with 66. … Tuman finished with a season-high 38 saves against Saint Mary’s on Friday, while Fritz has made a season-high 24 saves on three separate occasions this season.
• BY THE NUMBERS: St. Olaf has been outscored 36-35 through 14 games — but have only been outscored in one period. STO holds a 10-9 edge in first-period goals and an 12-8 advantage in the third, while being outscoring 19-13 in the middle period. … Seventeen of St. Olaf’s 35 goals have been scored on the powerplay. STO is 17-for-56 (30.4 %) with the man advantage, while the Oles’ opponents have scored four power-play goals on 37 chances (10.8 %). … The Oles posted season-highs in goals (7), assists (13), and points (20) in their 7-1 win over UW-Superior on Dec. 10, while posting a season-best 52 shots on goal against Northland on Nov. 4.
