WINONA, Minn. — It's been nearly a year since the Saint Mary's University and St. Scholastica men's soccer teams last squared off against each other.
Â
Three hundred-fifty one days, to be exact.
Â
And the Cardinals haven't forgotten what happened in that last meeting.
Â
St. Scholastica erupted for five goals — two in the first half and three more in the second — as the Saints dealt the Cardinals a season-ending 5-0 setback a year ago.
Â
With that loss still fresh in their minds — not to mention still smarting from Wednesday's 6-0 loss to 23rd-ranked St. Olaf — the Cardinals got downright defensive in Saturday afternoon's showdown, blanking the Saints.
Â
Unfortunately, St. Scholastica was equally as defensive, holding Saint Mary's off the scoreboard in the teams' 0-0 conference stalemate.
Â
With the Cardinals unable to convert on the offensive end — getting off 30 shots, including seven that found their way on goal — it was up to SMU goalkeeper
Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) to keep the Saints' slate clean.
Â
Which is exactly what the reigning MIAC Defensive Player of the Week did, as Sessler stopped all eight St. Scholastica shots on goal, including six in the second half, en route to his fourth shutout of the season.
Â
The Cardinals (2-3-2 MIAC, 6-4-2 overall) are now off until next Saturday, when they head to Northfield, Minn., for a 1 p.m. MIAC showdown against Carleton.
