SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s steps out of conference play this weekend sitting at 1-3-0 overall, including sporting a 1-1-0 record after its first two MIAC contests.
• LAST ACTION: The Cardinals settled for a split in their conference-opening series against Hamline last weekend, opening with a 2-0 victory last Friday at the SMU Ice Arena, before dropping a 3-0 decision at TRIA Rink in St. Paul, Minn., the following evening.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s game against Hamline was not only the first MIAC contest for the Cardinals, but also SMU’s first home game of the young season. The Cardinals played 14 of its 25 games in 2022-23 on their home ice, finishing 6-7-1.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.) leads the Cardinals in goals, having scored twice through four games, while Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.), Clay Allen (Anchorage, Alaska), and Colin Tushie (Prior Lake, Minn.) have accounted for SMU’s other three goals. … Winter netted SMU’s first goal of the season at 3:13 of the first period in SMU’s 6-3 loss to MSOE on Oct. 28. … Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.) and Nikita Sheberov (Obninsk, Russia) ended the year tied for the team lead with seven goals
• DOUBLING UP: Saint Mary’s had a player score two or more goals in a game six times last season — including twice by Lindauer. Sheberov (3 goals), Winter (2 goals), Tharaldson (2 goals), and Tushie (2 goals) also enjoyed multiple-goal games last season.
• FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL: Allen’s third-period goal against MSOE last Saturday was the first of his collegiate career. … Saint Mary’s had six players who scored their first goals in a Cardinal uniform a year ago.
• LENDING A HAND: Saint Mary’s seven assists this season have come from seven different players — Winter, Jack Campion (Crystal, Minn.), Callahan Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.), Jackson Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.), Blake Arneson (Red Wing, Minn.), and Noah Kiemel (Colorado Springs, Colo.). … Tharaldson racked up a team-leading 12 assists last season.
• POINT PRODUCERS: With his two goals and single assist, Winter sits atop the Cardinals’ early points race with three, two more than Allen, Tharaldson, Tushie, Arneson, Campion, Callahan Nauss, Jackson Nauss, and Noah Kiemel. … Tharaldson and Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.) led the Cardinals last season with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) has started three of SMU’s four games in goal, compiling a 2.37 goals-against-average and .922 save percentage. … A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) stopped 37 of the 45 shots he faced in his lone start of the season against Lake Forest on Oct. 27. The junior owns an 8.01 GAA and .822 save percentage. … Sankner locked up his second career shutout in SMU’s 2-0, conference-opening win over Hamline last Friday, stopping all 24 shots he faced. … Sankner has amassed 83 saves in three starts — including a season-high 34-save effort against Lake Forest on Oct. 28. … Sankner delivered a career-high 45-save effort performance against Augsburg on Nov. 18, 2022, while Ruskowski stopped a career-best 42 shots against St. Olaf on Jan. 13, 2023.
• FROM DEFENSE TO OFFENSE: Sankner collected his first collegiate assist, getting the lone helper on Sheberov’s first goal in the second period SMU’s 6-3 win over Lawrence on Jan. 2, 2023. … Sankner’s assist is the first by a Cardinal goalie since Nick Nash picked up an assist against Gustavus on Oct. 26, 2018.
• SCORING FIRST: Saint Mary’s has scored first in two of its first four games, going 1-1-0 when netting the game’s first goal. … SMU is now 15-6-0 when scoring first since the start of the 2021-22 season, while going 2-16-1 when their opponent nets the game’s first goal.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: All five of Saint Mary’s goals this season have been at even strength. SMU has gone 0-for-17 with the man advantage through four games. SMU’s opponents, meanwhile, own four of their 17 goals on the power play, going 4-for-18 with the man advantage, while also adding one shorthanded tally. … SMU has scored three of its five goals this season in the second period, while adding solo goals in the first and third periods. Eight of the 17 goals allowed by the Cardinals have come in the second period. SMU has also allowed five first-period goals and four in the game’s final stanza.

• LAST TIME OUT: After opening the season with a 4-2 nonconference win over St. Norbert on Oct. 31, the Pointers dropped back-to-back games last weekend, falling to Gustavus (6-4) and St. Scholastica (2-1).
• IN THE POLLS: UW-Stevens Point heads into this weekend’s nonconference games against Saint Mary’s and St. Olaf sitting at No. 13 in the latest USCHO.com Poll.
• HOME SWEET HOME: After two straight road games last weekend at Gustavus and St. Scholastica, the Pointers’ game against Saint Mary’s on Friday kicks off a three-game home stand, also hosting St. Olaf on Saturday and UW-Eau Claire next Tuesday. … UW-Stevens Point, which is 1-0-0 on its home ice this season — thanks to its season-opening win over St. Norbert — finished 12-1-3 at K.B. Willett Arena a year ago.
• OT ENDING: UW-Stevens Point played a pair of overtime games in the NCAA national tournament a year ago — beating Augsburg 2-1 in the second-longest game in NCAA Division III history — lasting four overtimes — before being eliminated by Adrian 3-2 in overtime in the second round.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: The Pointers’ nine goals have come from eight different players. Noah Finstrom leads the way with a pair of goals, with Brett Humberstone David Hill, Cody Moline, Fletcher Anderson, Sean Bunting, Andrew Poulias, and Conor Witherspoon accounting for the other seven. … UW-SP scored 104 goals in 30 games last season, with Anderson and Poulias leading the way with 14 goals each.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Humberstone and Mick Heneghan share the team lead in assists with three, one more than Gino Colangelo, with seven other players chipping in one helper. … UW-Stevens Point boasted six players with 10 or more assists a year ago, led by Heneghan with 16, Anderson with 15, and Jordan Fader with 14.

• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Alex Proctor and Ryan Maguire have shared the goaltending duties this season. Proctor owns a 2.02 goals-against-average and .939 save percentage in two starts, while Maguire (5.04 GAA, .861 save %) has started the Pointers’ other game. … Proctor owns 62 saves on 66 shots, with Maguire stopping 31 of the 36 shots he’s faced. … Proctor made 11 starts last season, posting a 2.06 GAA and .917 save % with 243 saves.

• LAST TIME OUT: UW-Superior came up empty in its two nonconference games last weekend, falling to 12th-ranked Augsburg 2-1 last Friday, before dropping a 4-0 decision to Concordia the following day.
• HOME SWEET HOME: After opening the season with three straight road games — falling to St. Scholastica (4-0), Augsburg (2-1), and Concordia (4-0) — this weekend’s games against Bethel and Saint Mary’s are the first of three consecutive home contests for the Yellowjackets. … UW-Superior closed out the 2022-23 season with a 7-7-1 record in 15 home contests, while going 8-5-1 away from Wessman Arena.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: UW-Superior’s five goals this season have come from five different players — Dusty Bergstrom, Blake Holmes, Dominic Murano, Cavin Rasmussen, and Daniel Rozsival. … The Yellowjackets scored 74 goals a year ago, led by MacGregor Sinclair with 12, Colston Friesen with 11, and C.J. • LENDING A HELPING HAND: Bergstrom and Tyler Ryder are the only Yellowjackets with more than one assist, sitting tied atop the team lead with two, followed by Justin Dauphinais, Chris Ishmael, Boone Mathison, and Walker with one each … UW-Superior had three players — Charles Martin (15), Friesen (11), and Zach Bannister (10) — who reached double figures in assists a year ago.

Kobe Grant has started two of the three games and played 146:07 minutes, compiling a 2.44 goals-against-average and .920 save percentage, while Jan Skorpik owns one start and 30:56 minutes, owning a 7.76 GAA and .778 save %. … Grant has stopped 65 of the 71 shots he’s faced, with Skorpik making 14 saves on 18 shots.
