ST. PAUL, Minn. — For the second time in two nights, the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team found themselves embroiled in a game decided by shutout.
Â
Unfortunately for the Cardinals. Saturday's rematch with Hamline did not go as favorably as Friday's.
Â
Hamline scored once in the second period and twice more in the third, as the Pipers — 2-0 losers to SMU in Friday's conference-opener — turned the tables and hand Saint Mary's a 3-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback Saturday evening at TRIA Rink.
Â
After a scoreless first period — for the second game in a row — Hamline broke through at 14:18 of the middle period, as Dallas Duckson found the back of the net, beating SMU goalie
Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) with a short-handed tally.
Â
Hamline maintained that one-goal cushion through the last 5:42 of the second frame and the first 18:28 of the third period, before Brandon McNamara scored to push HU's lead to 2-0. Third-seven seconds later, Jacob Wille made it 3-0, scoring an empty-net goal to give the Pipers the 3-0 victory.
Â
Sankner — who blanked the Pipers on 24 shots in recording his second shutout of his career on Friday, made 25 saves in Saturday 's rematch, while Hamline goalie Maximillian Haselbach stopped all 30 Saint Mary's shots.
Â
The Cardinals (1-1-0 MIAC, 1-3-0-0 overall) are back in action next weekend, heading to Stevens Point, Wis., for a 7 p.m. matchup against nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point on Friday, before heading to Superior, Wis. For a 7 p.m. matchup against UW-Superior the following evening.
