SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into Tuesday’s home showdown against Hamline sitting at 1-3 overall, having dropped games to UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater, and Crown to open the season, before posting a come-from-behind win over UW-River Falls last Saturday.
• LAST TIME OUT: Breyton Buysman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) knocked down a 3-pointer with 23 seconds to play in regulation and Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis.) added a pair of free throws in the waning seconds, as the Cardinals scored the game’s final five points in rallying for a 76-73 nonconference win over UW-River Falls last Saturday at the SMU Gym.
• HOME SWEET HOME: After back-to-back road games to open the season, Tuesday’s game against Hamline is the third of three straight home contests for the Cardinals. … Saint Mary’s — 1-1 at home this season — closed out last season 10-3 on their home court, while going 6-7 in 13 road contests.
• FACING THE NATION’S BEST: Saint Mary’s has already faced two teams that received recognition in the D3hoops.com Preseason Poll. UW-Platteville received votes in the opening poll, while UW-Whitewater — an NCAA Division III Final Four participant last season — was ranked No. 2. … SMU’s six-point win over No. 7 UW-La Crosse a year ago marked the first time in program history the Cardinals had beaten a team ranked in the Top 10 in the country. The win also snapped a six-game losing streak against the Eagles — dating back to a 65-50 triumph on Nov. 24, 1986.
• CARRYING THE OFFENSIVE LOAD: Cameron Mallory (Joliet, Ill.) heads into Tuesday’s home conference matchup against Hamline averaging a team-best 17.8 ppg — having scored in double figures in all four of Saint Mary’s games this season — including a pair of 20+ point performances … Breyton Buysman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) is also averaging in double figures in scoring at 15.0 ppg, with Jabari Sawyer (Chicago, Ill.) sitting third on the team with a 9.8 ppg average. … Mallory netted a then-career-high 20 points against UW-Platteville on Nov. 10, before bettering that by three with a 23-point showing against UW-River Falls on Saturday.. … Buysman and Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis.) finished the 2022-23 season averaging in double figures at 12.7 ppg and 12.5 ppg, respectively.
• GREATER THAN 20: With Mallory’s 20- and 23-point efforts against UW-Platteville and UW-River Falls, Saint Mary’s has now had a player score 20 or more points in 22 of its last 29 games.
• CAREER SCORING NIGHTS: Mallory’s 23-point showing against UW-River Falls last Saturday was a career high. … Saint Mary’s boasted six players who recorded single-game career-highs of 10 or more points last season.
• HITTING DOUBLE DIGITS: The Cardinals have put three players in double figures in three of their first four games. Mallory (20), Buysman (17), and Khai Branham (10) all hit double figures against UW-Platteville on Nov. 10; Mallory (17), Buysman (17), and Sawyer (10) delivered 10+ points against Crown on Nov. 15, and Mallory (23), Buysman (18), and Ziegler (14) against UW-River Falls last Saturday. … Saint Mary’s put at least three players in double figures in 19 of its 26 games a year ago – including four double-figure scorers in the same game eight times.
• ON THE GLASS: Buysman is the team’s leader in rebounds through the first four games, hauling in 20 boards (5.0 rpg) — including 17 on the defensive end. Sawyer and Bruce Lockwood (Shakopee, Minn.) are second on the team with 18 rebounds each (4.5 rpg). … Lockwood finished second on the team with 115 rebounds (4.6 rpg) a year ago, and posted a career-high 11 rebounds against St. Scholastica on Feb. 4, 2023.
• GOING DEEP: Saint Mary’s, which knocked down 242 3-pointers and led the nation in 3-point FG percentage (46.2 %), has made 27 of 76 3-point attempts this season (35.5 %) — including a season-high 12 against UW-River Falls last Saturday. … Buysman leads the team with seven treys, followed by Branham (5), Ziegler (4), Sawyer (4). … SMU equaled the program’s single-game record with 14 3-pointers against Finlandia on Jan. 2, 2023. … Ziegler went 3-for-5 from behind the 3-point line against Augsburg on Feb. 8, 2023 to break the single-season record of 71, held by Donald Jordan during the 1994-95 season. … Ziegler — who led the team with a single-season program-record 86 treys last season — netted a school record eight 3-pointers for the second straight game against Carleton on Dec. 3, going 8-for-14 from beyond the arc. He was 8-for-13 in first setting the school record against St. Olaf on Nov. 30.
• LENDING A HAND: Sawyer and Ziegler have both reached double figures in assists, with Sawyer dishing out 15 helpers, two more than Ziegler. … The Cardinals recorded a season-high 19 assists in their first meeting against Gustavus last season. SMU’s 19-assist effort was the most in a game since the Cardinals dished out 20 helpers against Augsburg on Feb. 2, 2021.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals are shooting 47.1 percent from the field (104-for-221), with 27 3-pointers, and are 29 of 39 (74.4 %) from the free throw line. … SMU is averaging 66.0 ppg, with its opponents scoring at a 79.0 ppg clip. … Saint Mary’s, which has scored 70 or more points in two of its first four games — including a season-high 76 against UW-River Falls last Saturday — scored 80 or more points in a game 10 times last season, including a season-high 102 against Finlandia on Jan. 2.

• FOR THE RECORD: The Pipers head into Tuesday’s conference-opener at Saint Mary’s sitting at 1-1 — having lost to Northwester (62-57) and routed Martin Luther (78-47) in their first two games.
• LAST TIME OUT: Hamline got scoring from 10 different players, including a career-high 17 points from Sam Bradley, as the Pipers rolled to a 78-47 nonconference win over Martin Luther on Nov. 14.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Pipers do not play back-to-back road or home games through the season’s first eight contests. … HU, which is 1-0 at home and 0-1 on the road this season, finished 8-4 on its home court a year ago, while finishing 7-8 away from Hutton Arena.
• CARRYING THE OFFENSIVE LOAD: Austin Holt and Daniel McCarrell both enter conference play averaging in double figures in scoring. Holt leads the team at 11.0 ppg, while McCarrell is close behind at 10.0 ppg. Brendan Ebel and Sam Bradley are both sitting third on the team in scoring at 8.5 ppg. … Hamline has had four different players post a game of 10+ points — Dominic Dosmanin (10), McCarrell (12), Holt (13), and Bradley (17).
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Holt has been a rebounding machine through the Pipers’ first two games, hauling in 18 boards (9.0 rpg), while Mick Wherley is second on the squad with eight rebounds (4.0 rpg). … Holt hauled in a season-high 10 rebounds against Northwestern on Nov. 9 to go with 13 points en route to HU’s first double-double of the season.
