SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference series against St. Scholastica on Friday sitting at 6-14-1 overall, including a 3-10-1 mark in conference play.
• LAST ACTION: The Cardinals surrendered three goals in each of their two games against Saint Benedict last weekend. Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.) scored early in the first period, but that would be all the offense SMU would be able to muster in dropping a 3-1 decision last Friday, before giving up the game-winning goal with 1:35 remaining in overtime in dropping the second game of the two-game series with the Bennies 3-2.
• ROAD SUCCESS: Four of the Cardinals’ six wins this season have come on the road. This weekend’s games against St. Scholastica are the final two home contests of the season for the Cardinals, who will close out their regular-season schedule with a pair of contests at Concordia next weekend. … Saint Mary’s is sitting at 2-5-1 on its home ice this year, while sporting a 4-9-0 mark away from the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• SPLITSVILLE: The Cardinals have split two of their last three MIAC conference series, going 1-1 against both Bethel and St. Catherine. For the season, SMU has split three of its seven conference series, having also split with Augsburg (W, 4-2; L, 3-2), while being swept by Gustavus (L, 4-0; L, 3-0), Hamline (3-0; 4-1), and Saint Benedict (3-1, 3-2 OT), and going 0-1-1 against St. Olaf (T, 2-2; L, 2-1).
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 3-2 loss to Saint Benedict last Saturday marked the second straight overtime Saturday for the Cardinals, who beat Bethel 2-1 on Jan. 28. … SMU’s 3-2 loss to CSB last Saturday was its fifth overtime game of the season — going 2-2-1 in those five contests. Along with their 2-1 win over Bethel, the Cardinals also own a 2-1 victory against UW-Stevens Point, while falling to Lake Forest (3-2) and Saint Benedict (3-2), and tying St. Olaf. … Saint Mary’s has now played nine overtime games in the last two seasons.
• A NIGHT TO REMEMBER: Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) recorded her first collegiate hat trick and her first career five-point game in SMU’s 5-0 win over St. Catherine on Jan. 20. The hat trick was Saint Mary’s first since Bailey Wendt scored four times against Bethel on Feb. 3, 2018, while her five-point night was the team’s first since Nicole Olson equaled that feat with three goals and two helpers against St. Norbert on Nov. 4, 2011.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season against Saint Benedict last Saturday. Kingston’s six goals are one more than Polzin and Taryn Dornself (Somerset, Wis.), while Jenna Kurkowski (North Branch, Minn.) and Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.) are tied for fourth with four goals, followed by Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.) with three. … SMU’s 42 goals have come from 16 different players.
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Saint Mary’s has had five players score their first collegiate goals this season: Sherner, Dornself, Parker, Jordy Wyant (Winnipeg, Manitoba), and Teagan Phillips (Oregon, Wis.).
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: SMU’s eight goals in its 8-0 win over Lawrence on Dec. 10 were scored by eight different players — Dornself, Parker, Braun, Kingston, Kurkowski, Carmean, Katie Devine (Glencoe, Ill.), and Elle Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.).
• SPREADING THE WEALTH II: Saint Mary’s 10 points in its 4-2 win over Augsburg on Nov. 18 came from 10 different players: Phillips, Sherner, Urlaub, and Polzin scored goals, while Kennedy Kraus (Kasson, Minn.), Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Minn.), Hegdahl, Dornself, Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.), and Parker all had assists.
• LENDING A HAND: Polzin enters this weekend’s games against St. Scholastica leading the Cardinals with six assists, one up on Kingston and two in front of Urlaub, Carmean, Hegdahl, and Pierpont.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Polzin and Kingston sit atop the Cardinals’ points race with 11, followed by Dornself and Urlaub with seven, and Kurkowski, Carmean, Hegdahl, and Pierpont with six each.
• DOUBLING UP: SMU had four players post multiple-point games against Lawrence on Dec. 10. Devine, Kurkowski, and Kingston all had a goal and an assist, while Polzin had two assists.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan Keeley (St. James, Minn.) and Celeste Rimstad (Richfield, Minn.) have shared the goaltending duties for the Cardinals this season. Keeley has stopped 339 of the 371 shots she’s faced in 14 appearances and owns a 2.77 goals-against-average and .914 save percentage, while Rimstad has recorded 218 saves in her first 12 appearances as a Cardinal, and sports a 1.80 GAA and .928 save %. … Keeley has stopped 30 or more shots in six of her 10 starts this season. … Rimstad has made 30 or more saves in a game twice, including a career-high 40-save showing vs. Hamline Nov. 12.
• A BRICK WALL: Rimstad stopped all 24 shots she faced against St. Catherine on Jan. 20 and has now recorded two shutouts this season — having recorded a 13-save shutout against Lawrence on Dec. 10. … Rimstad had her scoreless minute streak ended at 195:56 minutes, giving up a first-period goal to St. Catherine’s Ellie Skaja at 7:42 of the first period on Jan. 21. It was the first goal the SMU freshman has allowed since a late, third-period goal by Hamline on Nov. 12.
• THROWING UP BLANKS: Keeley and Rimstad both collected shutouts against Lawrence on Dec. 9-10. Keeley kicked out all 15 shots she faced on Dec. 9 for her first shutout of the season, and fourth of her collegiate career, while Rimstad stopped all 13 shots in the rematch the following afternoon for career shutout No. 1.
• BACK-TO-BACK GOOSE EGGS: The Cardinals 3-0 and 8-0 wins over Lawrence on Dec. 9-10 mark the first time since the 2003-04 season in which SMU has posted back-to-back shutouts. SMU did it three times during the 2003-04 season — beating Concordia (3-0) and St. Catherine (5-0); Bethel (3-0 and 5-0); and Hamline 8-0 and 5-0).
• CAREER NIGHT: Keeley stopped a career-high 49 shots in SMU’s 3-2 loss to Augsburg on Nov. 19. The 49 saves were four more than her previous career-best and the most by a Cardinal goalie since Ary Ziakas stopped 55 against Gustavus on Jan. 28, 2022.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: Saint Mary’s finished with 121 shots on goal against Lawrence on Dec. 9-10, while holding the Vikings to a combined 28. SMU outshot Lawrence 28-1 in the first period on Dec. 9 and boasted a 26-5 edge in shots in the second period on Dec. 10.
• MAKING THEIR MARK: The Cardinals’ 59 shots on goal against Lawrence on Dec. 9 rank No. 6 all-time, while their 62 shots the following afternoon are tied for No. 3 all-time. The program-record for shots on goal in a game is 80 against St. Olaf on Nov. 11, 2000.
• BY THE NUMBERS: SMU has scored 11 goals in the first period, while netting 15 goals in the second and 14 in the third. On the flip side, the Cardinals’ opponents have scored 14 times in the first period, 20 times in the second, and 18 times in the third. … SMU’s four third-period goals against Lawrence on Dec. 10 were a single-period season-high. … The Cardinals recorded season-highs in goals (8), assists (8), points (16), and shots on goal (62) against Lawrence on Dec. 10
ST. SCHOLASTICA SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Saints head into their two-game weekend series at Saint Mary’s sitting at 7-13-1 overall, including 6-8-0 in 14 conference games.
• LAST TIME OUT: UW-Eau Claire scored four unanswered goals, erasing a 2-1 second period Saints lead, and propelling the Blugolds to a 5-2 nonconference victory over St. Scholastica Wednesday at Hobbs Ice Arena in Eau Claire, Wis.
• ROAD WARRIORS: The Saints are in the midst of playing four of their final five games of the regular season on the road. Along with Wednesday’s game at UW-Eau Claire and this weekend’s two games at Saint Mary’s, CSS wraps up its regular-season slate with a home-and-home against Augsburg next weekend. … St. Scholastica sports a 4-5-1 record on its home ice, while going 3-8-0 away from Mars Lakeview Arena.
• FAMILIAR OUTCOME: With Wednesday’s loss 5-2 to UW-Eau Claire, the losing team has scored two goals in each of St. Scholastica’s last four games. Prior to Wednesday’s 5-2 loss to UW-Eau Claire, the Saints’ previous three games had all been decided by 4-2 decisions. CSS sandwiched 4-2 wins over Hamline and Bethel around a 4-2 loss to the Royals.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Abby Pohlkamp has scored a team-leading seven goals this season, three more than Jessie Ketola and Lauryn Hull, while Allie Bussey, Marian Haedrich, Hanley Block, Emily Sabol, and Gabby Gamst have all chipped in three goals. … Pohlkamp, Haedrich, and Taylor Murray have all recorded a season-high two-goal game this season.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Bussey has been the team’s set-up leader, compiling 11 assists in 21 games. Lisa LaRoche is sitting second on the squad with sevenhelpers, followed by Hull and Haedrich with five, and Block and Kayla Kasel with four. … Bussey delivered a season-high three assists against Hamline on Jan. 27.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Bussey and Pohlkamp have each reached double-digits in points — Bussey leads the way with 14, four in front of Pohlkamp. Hull and LaRoche are all tied for third on the team with nine points each. … Bussey and Haedrich have each posted a three-point game this season — both against Hamline on Jan. 27.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: St. Scholastica has used three different goalies between the pipes this season, led by Ashlea Arvidson, who has started 17 of the team’s 21 contests, compiling a 3.01 goals-against-average and .915 save percentage. Kenzie Cole has appeared in five games (246:11 minutes), owning a 3.90 GAA and .875 save %, with Elise Lund making one start (3.21 GAA, .885 save %). … Arvidson has stopped 505 of the 552 shots she’s faced — including a season-high 45 effort against against Gustavus on Nov. 12.. … Arvidson has recorded two shutouts this season, with Cole posting one.
• BY THE NUMBERS: St. Scholastica has been outscored 71-40 this season, including 19-12 in the first period, 31-17 in the second, and 21-10 in the third. … CSS has scored nine power-play goals on 71 chances (12.7 %), while killing off 57 of its opponents’ 77 power-play opportunities (74.0%). … CSS has scored a season-high four goals four times this season, while notching season-highs in assists (7) and points (11) against both Saint Benedict on Nov. 18 and Hamline on Jan. 27. … The Saints have played two overtime games this season, beating UW-Superior (2-1) on Dec. 6 and tying St. Norbert (1-1) on Nov. 5.
