ST. CLOUD, Minn. — For the second Saturday in a row, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team had to put in a little extra work – finding themselves deadlocked after regulation.
Â
Unlike last Saturday's 2-1 overtime win over Bethel, however, OT was not kind to the Cardinals this time around, as Saint Benedict's Ava Stinnett scored with 1:35 remaining in the extra session to deal Saint Mary's a 3-2 setback at Ritsche Arena.
Â
As was the case against the Bennies in Friday's first meeting — in which SMU held a 37-22 edge in shots on goal, only to manage just a single first-period tally — the Cardinals once again controlled the play early in the rematch.
Â
And this time, that domination paid off to the tune of two first-period goals — the first by
Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) at 3:40 and the second by
Ellie Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.) with 18 seconds to play — giving Saint Mary's a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.
Â
Unfortunately, that would be the extent of the Cardinals' offensive output, and CSB would take advantage, scoring once in the second period and added the game-tying goal midway through the third.
Â
In the overtime, Saint Mary's out-shot the Bennies 4-2, but it was that second CSB shot — off the stick of Stinnett — that gave Saint Benedict the win, and the sweep of the teams' two-game series.
Â
The Cardinals (3-10-1 MIAC, 6-14-1 overall) return home to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for a pair of conference games against St. Scholastica next weekend. The two teams will play at 7 p.m.on Friday, and will square off again at 2 p.m. the following afternoon.
