Cardinals turn up heat with 5-1 victory

WINONA, Minn. — After failing to score a goal in Friday's 2-0 loss to St. Scholastica Friday evening, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team just couldn't be stopped Saturday.

The Cardinals erupted for five goals — including tallies from seniors Katie Devine (Glencoe, Minn.) and Sydney (East Bethel, Minn.) on Senior Day — as SMU avenged Friday's shutout loss with a 5-1 victory at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.

The first period proved to be the exact inverse of Friday's first stanza. Despite CSS leading SMU in shots on goal, 15-6, it would be the Cardinals who came up with the lone goal. Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.) netted her fourth goal of the season with assists from Kennedy Kraus (Kasson, Minn.) and Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) at 5:55 for a 1-0 lead.

The Saints tied the score just  2:24 into the second period off a goal from Lisa LaRoche, but that didn't deter the Cardinals. Ellie Hegdahl would net SMU's second goal at 13:56 with assists coming from Green and Urlaub to regain the lead at 2-1.

The Cardinals would strike again less than three minutes into the final period, as Green took advantage of an SMU power play to record her second goal of the season — off an assist from Taryn Dornseif (Somerset, Wis.) — to extend the Cardinal lead to 3-1.

And the Cardinals weren't done yet.

Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) netted a fourth goal for SMU on a power play and Devine added an empty-net goal — once again assisted by Urlaub — to secure SMU's 5-1 domination.

Jordan Keeley (St. Peter, Minn.) made 29 saves for the Cardinals in goal.

The Cardinals (4-11-1 MIAC, 7-15-1 overall) will hit the road to face off against Concordia on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn for the first of a two-game MIAC series.
