MOORHEAD, Minn. — It was just a matter of time – 59 minutes and 55 seconds, to be exact.
Â
Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) scored with five seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team to a 1-1 tie in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup Friday evening at the Moorhead Sports Center.
Â
Saint Mary's came up empty in its three shootout attempts, while CC's Abbey Hardwick scored on one of the Cobbers' three tries to give Concordia the extra standings point.
Â
The Cardinals enjoyed the upper hand in the first period, outshooting the Cobbers 9-5, but they were unable to get one past CC goalie Kiana Flaig, and the two teams went into the first intermission the same way they started the game — deadlocked at 0-0.
Â
Saint Mary's continued to pepper the CC net in the middle period, firing 14 more shots in Flaig's direction — and once again the Cobber netminder was up to the challenge, stopping all 14 to keep it a scoreless affair after 40 minutes.
Â
Flaig continued to frustrate the Cardinals in the third period, stopping the first 10 shots she faced — but the senior could not make save No. 11, as Kingston found the back of the net to pull Saint Mary's even with five ticks on the clock.
Â
Saint Mary's finished with 43 shots on goal, while the Cobbers put 21 shots on SMU goalie
Jordan Keeley (St. Peter, Minn.), who finished with 20 saves.Â
The Cardinals (4-11-2 MIAC, 7-15-2 overall) will get another shot at the Cobbers on Saturday, as the two teams return to the Moorhead Sports Center for a 2 p.m. rematch.
