MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's women's hockey team closed out their regular season on Saturday — and they did it with a win.
Â
And while the game was very reflective of the teams' first matchup between SMU and Concordia on Friday — with game-tying goals coming in the last six seconds and an ensuing overtime — this time around, the Cardinals were not about to let it end in a tie.Â
Â
Instead, SMU got a goal from
Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.) just 1:02 into overtime to record a 4-3 victory over CC at the Moorhead Sports Center.
Â
In Friday's matchup, it took the Cardinals until the final five seconds of the game to get on the board, as
Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) forced overtime with her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the teams' 1-1 tie.
Â
They refused to wait that long in the rematch.
Â
Katie Devine (Glencoe, Ill.) netted her third goal of the season at 13:59 in the first period — with help coming from
Mikayla Vasilevich (Chicago, Ill.) and Kingston — to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead..Â
Â
The Cobbers wasted no time responding in the second period, scoring just 35 seconds in on a goal by Jerica Friese.Â
Â
The 1-1 tie didn't last long, however, as
Anne Carmean (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) netted a second goal for the Cardinals — the assist coming from
Ellie Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.) — with less than five minutes to go in the period, gaining a 2-1 lead to head into the final break.
Â
The Cardinals extended their lead to 3-1 with an unassisted goal by
Jordy Wyant (Winnipeg, Manitoba). The Cobbers, however, responded five minutes later to tighten the score to 3-2.Â
Â
CC pulled goalie Kiana Flaig for the extra offensive attacker in the hopes of scoring — and their efforts were rewarded, with a goal coming with just six seconds remaining to send the teams into overtime — again.Â
Â
Unlike Friday's outcome, this game wouldn't end in a tie — the victory was granted to the Cardinals, thanks to Urlaub's OT heroics.Â
Â
The Cardinals closed out their season going 5-11-2 in the MIAC and 8-15-2 overall.
