SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into its three games in Carol Stream, Ill., having gone 3-5 in its eight spring trip games in Auburndale, Fla., last week — including wins over Franklin, Calvin, and Russell Sage.
• LAST ACTION: Mason Coyle (Madison, Wis.) went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, as the Cardinals closed out their eight-game spring trip with a 9-6 win over Russell Sage in a nine-inning contest in Auburndale, Fla., on March 4.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Saint Mary’s boasted three players who hit above .300 in the Cardinals’ eight games in Auburndale, Fla., last week. Riley Bauman (Stratford, Wis.) led the way with a .379 batting average, followed by Cameron Weber (Holmen, Wis.) at .347 and Mason Coyle (Madison, Wis.) at .333. … As a team, the Cardinals batted .244 (55-for-225) with 12 doubles, one triple and a home run.
• ON THE RUN: The Cardinals, who scored 181 runs in 37 games last season, plated 29 runs in eight spring-trip games last week. Riley Bauman and Coyle led the way with four runs scored each, one more than Tanner Bauman (Willmar, Minn.) and Ben Coons (Kimberly, Wis.), while Cameron Weber (Holmen, Wis.), Patrick Schork (Janesville, Wis.), Will Boeckman (Big Lake, Minn.), and Brinton Anderson () all scored twice. … Merfeld and Coyle each scored a career-high four runs in a game a year ago — Merfeld’s coming against Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022, while Coyle achieved the feat against Carleton on May 8, 2022.
• HIT PARADE: Riley Bauman and Weber each reached double-digits in hits through SMU’s eight spring-trip games. Bauman leads the team with 11 hits — including a double and a home run — while Weber has collected 10 singles. … The Cardinals closed out the 2022 year with six players recording at least 20 hits — led by Trevon VanEgtern (La Crosse, Wis.) with 43 and Weber with 37. … Weber and Riley Bauman have each put together four multiple-hit games this season
• EXTRA, EXTRA: Saint Mary’s collected 55 hits in its first eight games, including nine for extra bases. Schork leads the team in doubles, accounting for three of the Cardinals’ two-baggers, while Coyle owns the lone triple and Riley Bauman SMU’s only home run. …
• BOMBS AWAY: After belting 15 home runs a year ago — led by VanEgtern and Daniel Marxen (Maple Grove, Minn.) with four HRs each — Riley Bauman owns SMU’s lone round-tripper through eight games this season. Bauman’s home run — the first of his career — was a lead-off shot in the second inning of SMU’s 3-2 loss to Franklin on Feb. 26. … All seven SMU home run hitters this a year ago belted their first career HRs in 2022.
• DRIVING ‘EM HOME: Tanner Bauman leads the Cardinals with five RBIs, followed by Coyle with three, and Riley Bauman, Weber, Schork, and Brandon Merfeld (La Crosse, Wis.) with two each. … Jack Arndt (Coon Rapids, Minn.) delivered a career-high five RBIs in Saint Mary’s 9-7 win over Grove City on Feb. 28, 2022 while Marxen — who led the team with eight multiple-RBI games a year ago — drove in a career-best four runs in a game twice last season.
• STREAKING ALONG: Riley Bauman collected at least one hit in seven of SMU’s eight games in Florida, and heads into SMU’s games against Wheaton and Northwestern riding a six-game hitting streak. … Merfeld, meanwhile, has reached base safely in all eight games this season.
• OUCH: Saint Mary’s had two games in 2022 — vs. Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022 and vs. Carleton on May 8, 2022 — in which five Cardinals were hit by a pitch. … Individually, SMU had a player hit by a pitch twice in a game five times.
• CATCH ME IF YOU CAN: Saint Mary’s has stolen 23 bases on 25 attempts through eight games, led by Weber (5-for-5) and Riley Bauman (4-for-4). SMU has gotten at least one stolen base from 10 different players.
• ON THE MOUND: Saint Mary’s used 11 different pitchers this season — including three who have logged 10 or more innings. Timmy Smith (South St. Paul, Minn. / 2-0, 6.55 ERA) and Addison Hochevar (Lake Geneva, Wis. / 0-2, 2.45 ERA) have both thrown 11.0 innings in two starts, while Andrew Fischer (La Crosse, Wis. / 0-1, 5.40 ERA) has gone 10.0 innings. … Dylan Westcott (Holmen, Wis. / 0-1, 1.50 ERA) has made a team-leading three appearances.
• PITCHING FIRSTS: Eric Charest (Blaine, Minn. / 1-0, 1.50 ERA, 6.0 IP) picked up his first collegiate pitching win against Calvin on March 2, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in five innings of SMU’s 8-2 win over the Knights. The freshman right-hander collected his first save in a Cardinal uniform with one inning of scoreless relief in SMU’s 3-2 win over MSOE on Feb. 27.
• SAVING THE DAY: Westcott and Charest have accounted for Saint Mary’s two saves this season. … Fischer closed out the 2022 season as team’s saves leader with six, one more than Westcott.
• FANNING THE FLAMES: The SMU pitching staff has struck out 43 batters in eight games, led by Hochevar with 14, followed by Fischer with eight and Smith with seven. … Hochevar matched his career-high with nine strikeouts in the Cardinals’ 1-0, Game 2 loss to Franklin on Feb. 27. It was the third time in his collegiate career that Hochevar has fanned nine batters. … Hochevar led the Cardinals in strikeouts with 60 a year ago.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals have scored eight or more runs in two of their three wins this season, including a season-high nine-run effort in beating Russell Sage 9-6 on March 4. On the flip side, Saint Mary’s has been held to five runs or less in four of its five losses. AURORA SPARTANS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Spartans come into their Monday action sitting at 7-2 overall, rattling off five straight wins to open the season, before going 2-2 in their final four spring-trip games.
• LAST TIME OUT: Aurora closed out its nine-game spring trip on a winning note on March 11, scoring seven runs in three innings — three in the third, two in the fifth and two more in the eighth — in beating Buena Vista 7-4 in Auburndale, Fla.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Aurora is hitting .362 as a team, and boasts seven players who are hitting .333 or above. Nico Bermeo leads the way for the Spartans, sporting a .529 batting average, followed by Jacob Ambuel at .439 and Justin Sartori at .412. Collin Meinert (.375), Derek Angelo (.375), Josh Reinhardt (.355), and Dominick Curcio (.333) are also hitting above .300.

• FOR THE RECORD: Wheaton enters its doubleheader against Saint Mary’s sitting at 4-6 overall, including a 3-4 showing in its seven games in Fort Pierce, Fla., last week.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Thunder closed out their seven-game spring trip in impressive fashion, erupting for 23 runs in a 23-3 rout of Gallaudet in Fort Pierce, Fla., on March 11.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Kyle Wu heads into Monday’s matchup vs. SMU sporting a team-leading .543 batting average. Wu is one of four Thunder players owning batting averages above .300, being joined by Matthias Haggerty (.471), Mason Diel (.412), and Ben Weaver (.390).
• ON THE RUN: Harrison Stanton has scored a team-leading 13 runs, one more than Wu and Weaver, and three up on Haggerty. … Stanton scored a single-game season-high four runs against Greenville on Feb. 25.

• LAST TIME OUT: Northwestern closed out its spring trip with a split of its nonconference doubleheader against Gettysburg on March 10 in Florida Coast, Fla.. The Bulls dealt the Eagles a 10-1 setback in the opener, with UNW responding with a 14-5 thumping of Gettysburg in the nightcap.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: UNW closed out its eight-game spring trip hitting .319, and boasts seven players hitting above .300. Daniel Peterson leads the way for the Eagle offense with a .435 batting average, followed by C.J.
