SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their nonconference, home-opening matchup against UW-La Crosse sitting at 4-7 overall through the first 11 games of the 2023 season.
• LAST ACTION: Timmy Smith (South St. Paul, Minn.) tossed a complete-game five-hitter in leading the Cardinals to a 3-1 nonconference win over Northwestern in a nine-inning showdown on March 22 in Carol Stream, Ill.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Saint Mary’s boasts four regulars who are hitting better than .300 this season, led by Mason Coyle (Madison, Wis.), who has gone 11-for-26 for a team-leading .423 batting average. Cameron Weber (Holmen, Wis.) is second at .366, followed by Riley Bauman (Stratford, Wis. / .357) and Patrick Schork (Janesville, Wis. / .316). … As a team, the Cardinals a batting .268 (91-for-340) through 11 games.
• ON THE RUN: The Cardinals, who scored 181 runs in 37 games last season, have plated 49 runs in 11 games thus far this season. Riley Bauman leads the team with eight runs scored, one more than Trevon VanEgtern (La Crosse, Wis.) and three up on Coyle, Tanner Bauman (Willmar, Minn.), and Daniel Marxen (Maple Grove, Minn.). … Coyle and Brandon Merfeld (La Crosse, Wis.) each scored a career-high four runs in a game a year ago — Merfeld’s coming against Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022, while Coyle achieved the feat against Carleton on May 8, 2022.
• HIT PARADE: Weber and Riley Bauman share the team lead in hits with 15, while Coyle has also reached double figures with 11 hits. Merfeld and VanEgtern are both tied for fourth on the team with nine hits, one more than Tanner Bauman. … Weber and Riley Bauman have each collected multiple-hit games in six of the team’s 11 contests, while Coyle owns the team’s only two three-hit affairs.
• MAKING AN IMPRESSION: Daniel Sherman (Richfield, Minn.) made the most of his first collegiate at-bat, delivering a pinch-hit double in the Cardinals 3-1 win over Northwestern on March 22. … Sherman is the second Cardinal to collect his first collegiate hit this season, being joined by Schork, who belted his first hit in an SMU uniform against MSOE on Feb. 27.
• EXTRA, EXTRA: Saint Mary’s has collected 91 hits in its first 11 games, including 20 for extra bases. Schork leads the team in doubles with three, one more than Marxen, Tanner Bauman, and Will Boeckman (Big Lake, Minn.). … Coyle owns the team’s lone triple, hitting a three-bagger against Russell Sage on March 4.
• BOMBS AWAY: After belting 15 home runs a year ago — led by VanEgtern and Marxen with four HRs each — SMU has hit four round-trippers this season. Riley Bauman leads the team with two home runs, with VanEgtern and Marxen launching the other two. … Bauman’s first home run of the season against Franklin on Feb. 26 was the first of his collegiate career. … All seven SMU home run hitters a year ago belted their first career HRs in 2022.
• DRIVING ‘EM HOME: Tanner Bauman has delivered a team-leading six RBIs, one more than Coyle, with Riley Bauman and Marxen each owning five RBIs. … Tanner Bauman has recorded three multiple-RBI games this season, one more than both Marxen and Coyle. … SMU has yet to have a player drive in more than two runs in a game this season. … Jack Arndt (Coon Rapids, Minn.) delivered a career-high five RBIs in Saint Mary’s 9-7 win over Grove City on Feb. 28, 2022.
• STREAKING ALONG: Riley Bauman owns the team’s longest hitting streak at eight games, but Coyle’s five-game hit streak is the team’s longest active streak. Weber, Boeckman, and Tanner Bauman have all hit safely in each of the Cardinals’ last four games. … Merfeld has reached base safely in 10 consecutive games, while Riley Bauman has reached in each of the team’s last nine contests.
• OUCH: The Cardinals have been hit by a pitch 12 times in 11 games, led by Weber, who has been beaned three times. … Saint Mary’s had two games in 2022 — vs. Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022 and vs. Carleton on May 8, 2022 — in which five Cardinals were hit by a pitch. … Individually, SMU had a player hit by a pitch twice in a game five times.
• CATCH ME IF YOU CAN: Saint Mary’s has stolen 30 bases on 33 attempts through 11 games, led by Weber (8-for-8) and Riley Bauman (5-for-5). SMU has gotten at least one stolen base from 10 different players.
• ON THE MOUND: Saint Mary’s has used 11 different pitchers this season — including three who have logged 10 or more innings. Timmy Smith (South St. Paul, Minn. / 3-0, 3.60 ERA) has thrown a team-leading 20.0 innings, followed by Addison Hochevar (Lake Geneva, Wis. / 0-2, 2.81 ERA, 16.0 IP) and Andrew Fischer (La Crosse, Wis. / 0-2, 8.22 ERA, 15 1/3 IP). … Dylan Westcott (Holmen, Wis. / 0-2, 7.71 ERA) has made a team-leading four appearances.
• PITCHING FIRSTS: Smith tossed his first collegiate nine-inning complete game against Northwestern on March 22, holding the Eagles to one run on five hits in a 3-1 SMU victory. … Eric Charest (Blaine, Minn. / 1-0, 1.50 ERA, 6.0 IP) picked up his first collegiate pitching win against Calvin on March 2, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in five innings of SMU’s 8-2 win over the Knights. The freshman right-hander collected his first save in a Cardinal uniform with one inning of scoreless relief in SMU’s 3-2 win over MSOE on Feb. 27.
• SAVING THE DAY: Westcott and Charest have accounted for Saint Mary’s two saves this season. … Fischer closed out the 2022 season as team’s saves leader with six, one more than Westcott.
• FANNING THE FLAMES: The SMU pitching staff has struck out 64 batters in 11 games, led by Smith with 19, Hochevar with 15, and Fischer with 11. … Smith struck out a career-high eight batters against Northwestern on March 22. … Hochevar matched his career-high with nine strikeouts in the Cardinals’ 1-0, Game 2 loss to Franklin on Feb. 27. It was the third time in his collegiate career that Hochevar has fanned nine batters. … Hochevar led the Cardinals in strikeouts with 60 a year ago.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals have scored 49 runs in 11 games, including a season-high nine runs twice. SMU beat Russell Sage 9-6 on March 4, while falling to Aurora 13-9 last Monday. Saint Mary’s is 4-3 when scoring at least three runs, but winless (0-4) when being held under three runs. On the flip side, SMU has allowed six runs of ore in four of its seven losses, including a season-high 13 runs in its 13-9 loss to Aurora on March 21. … The Cardinals are 4-0 when leading or tied after the sixth inning, but are still searching for their first win (0-7) when trailing heading to the seventh. … Saint Mary’s, which scored four or more runs in an inning eight times last season — including a seven-run fourth inning against Hamline on April 19, 2022 and a season-high eight-run second inning in its 16-7 win over Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022 — owns one four-run inning this season.
UW-LA CROSSE EAGLES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Eagles head into their nonconference showdown against Saint Mary’s sporting a 9-3 overall record through their first 12 games of the 2023 season
• LAST TIME OUT: UW-La Crosse kicked off WIAC play last weekend, taking three of four from UW-Stout. The two teams split their two conference games last Saturday in high-scoring fashion — UW-L winning 10-4 and UW-Stout winning 17-4 — while the Eagles took both games on Sunday with victories of 9-1 and 5-2.
• vs. THE MIAC: UW-La Crosse’s two games against Saint Mary’s are the fourth and fifth of 11 contests this season against teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-L has already faced St. Scholastica (W, 7-0; W, 11-3) and Bethel (W, 1-0), and still have doubleheaders against St. Olaf, St. Scholastica, and Gustavus on its schedule.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: The Eagles head into their matchup against Saint Mary’s hitting .297 as a team, and boast five players who are hitting above .300. Logan Pye leads the way with a .500 batting average, followed by Jack Moran (.404), Mac Born (.375), Anthony Vivian (.356), and Ty Hamilton (.310).
• ON THE RUN: Moran has scored a team-high 13 runs in 12 games, while Jack Oliver has also reached double digits in runs scored with 10.

• BOMBS AWAY: Vivian and Seaman have accounted for eight of the Eagles’ 12 home runs this season, with each hitting four. VandenHeuvel owns a pair of round-trippers, with Pye and Oliver accounting for the other two. … The Eagles crushed a single-game season-high three home runs against William Paterson on March 18.
• DRIVING ‘EM IN: Born and Seaman have each delivered a team-leading 13 RBIs, with Vivian sitting third on the team with 10. … Seaman leads the team with four multiple-RBI games, one more than both Vivian and Born. … VandenHeuvel and Born have each driven in five runs in a game — VandenHeuvel against UW-Superior on March 13 and Born vs. Kalamazoo on March 21.
