WINONA, Minn. —
Philip Apel (North Oaks, Minn.) made his first collegiate singles start a memorable one, posting a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles.
Â
That, however, would be the Cardinals' only win, as Macalester dealt the Saint Mary's men's tennis team an 8-1 Minnesota Intercolleigate Athletic Conference setback Saturday afternoon at the Winona Tennis Center.
Â
"The guys gave it their all," said Saint Mary's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg. "There were a number of very close matches, we just couldn't seem to get over the hump. Give credit to Macalester, they are playoff-caliber team and played extremely well against us."
Â
The Scots jumped out to a quick, 3-0 lead after the doubles matches, before winning five of the six singles contests. Along with Apel's straight-set win at No. 6,
Evan Huemoeller () and
Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) both extended their matches to a third set, only to come up short — Huemoeller fell 3-6, 6-0, 10-7 at No. 1 and Janssen dropped a 3-6, 6-5, 10-4 decision at No. 3.
Â
The Cardinals (2-5 MIAC, 9-8 overall) are now off until April 15, when they travel to Waverly, Iowa, for a 10 a.m. nonconference match against Wartburg.
