SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference showdown against Bethel sitting at 6-12 overall through the first 18 games of the 2023 season, including a 2-4 showing in conference play.
• LAST ACTION: St. Olaf dealt the Cardinals a pair of conference losses last Saturday at Max Molock Field, limiting SMU to a lone seventh-inning hit in a 1-0 victory in the opening game of their MIAC DH, before breaking an 8-8 deadlock with a walk-off, two-out single in the bottom of the ninth for a 9-8 win in Game 2.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: The Cardinals boast three regulars who are hitting above .300 this season, led by Mason Coyle (Madison, Wis.), who has gone 16-for-44 for a team-leading .364 batting average. Riley Bauman (Stratford, Wis. / .313) and Cameron Weber (Holmen, Wis. / .306) are also sporting batting averages north of .300. … As a team, Saint Mary’s is hitting .254 (136-for-536).
• ON THE RUN: The Cardinals have plated 79 runs in 18 games thus far this season. Riley Bauman has scored a team-leading 12 runs, one more than Trevon VanEgtern (La Crosse, Wis.), followed by Coyle (10), Tanner Bauman (Willmar, Minn. / 9) and Daniel Marxen (Maple Grove, Minn. / 7). … Coyle and Brandon Merfeld (La Crosse, Wis.) each scored a career-high four runs in a game a year ago — Merfeld’s coming against Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022, while Coyle achieved the feat against Carleton on May 8, 2022.
• HIT PARADE: Riley Bauman and Weber lead the team in hits with 20 and 19, respectively, with VanEgtern (17), Coyle (16), Merfeld (15), and Tanner Bauman (11) also reaching double figures in hits through 16 games. … Riley Bauman has collected a team-best seven multiple-hit games, one more than Weber. … Coyle owns two of SMU’s four, three-hit games, with Marxen and VanEgtern accounting for the other two.
• MAKING AN IMPRESSION: Daniel Sherman (Richfield, Minn.) made the most of his first collegiate at-bat, delivering a pinch-hit double in the Cardinals 3-1 win over Northwestern on March 22. … Sherman is the second Cardinal to collect his first collegiate hit this season, being joined by Schork, who belted his first hit in an SMU uniform against MSOE on Feb. 27.
• EXTRA, EXTRA: Saint Mary’s has collected 136 hits in its first 18 games, including 30 for extra bases — 22 doubles, one triple, and seven home runs. … Schork, Riley Bauman, and Tanner Bauman share the team lead in doubles with three, one more than Merfeld, Marxen, and Will Boeckman (Big Lake, Minn.). … Coyle owns the team’s lone triple, hitting a three-bagger against Russell Sage on March 4.
• BOMBS AWAY: After belting 15 home runs a year ago — led by VanEgtern and Marxen with four HRs each — SMU has hit seven round-trippers this season. Riley Bauman leads the team with three home runs, one more than Coyle, with VanEgtern and Marxen launching the other three. … Bauman’s first home run of the season against Franklin on Feb. 26 was the first of his collegiate career. … All seven SMU home run hitters a year ago belted their first career HRs in 2022.
• DRIVING ‘EM IN: Riley Bauman leads the team in RBIs with 13, with Coyle sitting second with 11 RBIs, three more than Tanner Bauman. … Coyle, Tanner Bauman and Ryan Bauman have all recorded three multiple-RBI games this season, one more than Marxen, Miller, and VanEgtern. … Riley Bauman delivered a single-game career-high four RBIs against Carleton last Saturday.
• OUCH: The Cardinals have been hit by a pitch 18 times in 18 games, led by Weber, who has been beaned four times. … Saint Mary’s had two games in 2022 — vs. Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022 and vs. Carleton on May 8, 2022 — in which five Cardinals were hit by a pitch. … Individually, SMU had a player hit by a pitch twice in a game five times.

• PITCHING FIRSTS: Smith tossed his first collegiate nine-inning complete game against Northwestern on March 22, holding the Eagles to one run on five hits in a 3-1 SMU victory. … Eric Charest (Blaine, Minn. / 1-0, 1.50 ERA, 6.0 IP) picked up his first collegiate pitching win against Calvin on March 2, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in five innings of SMU’s 8-2 win over the Knights. The freshman right-hander collected his first save in a Cardinal uniform with one inning of scoreless relief in SMU’s 3-2 win over MSOE on Feb. 27. … Fischer tossed his first collegiate complete game in Friday’s 6-0, Game 1 loss to Saint John’s.
• SAVING THE DAY: Westcott collected his second save of the season against St. Scholastica on Monday, while Charest and Stomberg each own one save. … Fischer closed out the 2022 season as team’s saves leader with six, one more than Westcott.
• FANNING THE FLAMES: The SMU pitching staff has struck out 94 batters in 18 games, led by Hochevar with 32, Smith with 21, and Fischer with 15. … Hochevar, who led the team with 60 strikeouts a year ago, fanned a career-high 10 batters in last Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Carleton. … Smith struck out a career-high eight batters against Northwestern on March 22.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals have scored 79 runs in 18 games, including a season-high nine runs three times. SMU has plated nine runs in beating St. Scholastica (9-2) and Russell Sage (9-6), while falling to Aurora (13-9). … Saint Mary’s is 6-6 when scoring at least three runs, but winless (0-6) when being held under three runs. On the flip side, SMU has allowed six runs or more in eight of its 12 losses, including a season-high 13 runs in its 13-9 loss to Aurora on March 21. … The Cardinals are 6-2 when leading or tied after the sixth inning, but are still searching for their first win (0-10) when trailing heading to the seventh. … Saint Mary’s, which scored four or more runs in an inning eight times last season — including a seven-run fourth inning against Hamline on April 19, 2022 and a season-high eight-run second inning in its 16-7 win over Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022 — owns two four-run innings this season.

• FOR THE RECORD: The Royals head into their conference showdown against Saint Mary’s sitting at 10-4 overall, including a 2-0 record in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Royals picked up their first two conference wins on Monday, cruising to back-to-back wins over St. Scholastica at Ona Orth Athletic Complex. BU dropped the Saints 7-1 in the opening, before posting a 5-0 victory in Game 2.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Bethel owning a .311 batting average through its first 14 games, and boasts five regulars who are hitting above .300. Nick Kulseth — one of three Royals boasting a batting average north of .400 — leads the BU offense, hitting .458. Ty Koehn is second on the team at .426, followed by Matthew Carlsen (.421), Tommy Friesen (.386), and Keenan Hodgkin (.313).
• ON THE RUN: The Royals have plated a whopping 93 runs in 14 games, led by Kulseth and Carlsen who have both scored 15 times. Friesen and Marcus Krupke are sitting third on the team with nine runs scored, one more than Koehn, Justin Winterfeldt, and Noah Wenberg. … Carlsen scored a single-game season-high four runs against Benedictine (Ill.) on March 16.
• HIT PARADE: Carlsen has banged out a team-leading 24 hits in 57 at-bats, two more than Kulseth, with Koehn also reaching the 20-hit club with 20 hits.
