SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference showdown against Macalester sitting at 6-14 overall through the first 20 games of the 2023 season, including a 2-6 showing in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Bethel jumped out to an early lead and the Cardinals could never recover, as the Royals dealt Saint Mary’s a pair of 11-2 conference setback in Wednesday’s MIAC doubleheader at Max Molock Field.
• AT THE PLATE: The Cardinals boast a pair of regulars who are hitting above .300 this season, led by Mason Coyle (Madison, Wis.), who has gone 19-for-50 for a team-leading .380 batting average. Riley Bauman (Stratford, Wis.) also boasts a batting average north of .300, sitting at .310. … As a team, Saint Mary’s is hitting .250 (149-for-595).
• ON THE RUN: The Cardinals have plated 83 runs in 20 games thus far this season. Riley Bauman and Trevon VanEgtern (La Crosse, Wis.) have both scored a team-leading 12 runs, one more than Coyle, while Tanner Bauman (Willmar, Minn.) is sitting fourth with nine runs scored. … Coyle and Brandon Merfeld (La Crosse, Wis.) each scored a career-high four runs in a game a year ago — Merfeld’s coming against Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022, while Coyle achieved the feat against Carleton on May 8, 2022.
• HIT PARADE: Riley Bauman and Cameron Weber (Holmen, Wis.) lead the team in hits with 22 and 20, respectively, with Coyle (19), VanEgtern (18), Merfeld (17), and Tanner Bauman (12) also reaching double figures in hits through 20 games. … Riley Bauman has collected a team-best seven multiple-hit games, one more than Weber and two up on Coyle. … Coyle owns two of SMU’s four, three-hit games, with Marxen and VanEgtern accounting for the other two.
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Saint Mary’s has had three players record their first collegiate hits this season. Jaxon Vance (Eau Claire, Wis.) delivered his first hit as a Cardinal against Bethel on Tuesday, while Daniel Sherman (Richfield, Minn.) laced a pinch-hit double against Northwestern on March 22, and Patrick Schork (Janesville, Wis.) belted his first hit in an SMU uniform against MSOE on Feb. 27.
• EXTRA, EXTRA: Saint Mary’s has collected 149 hits in its first 20 games, including 31 for extra bases — 22 doubles, one triple, and eight home runs. … Schork, Riley Bauman, and Tanner Bauman share the team lead in doubles with three, one more than Merfeld, Marxen, and Will Boeckman (Big Lake, Minn.). … Coyle owns the team’s lone triple, hitting a three-bagger against Russell Sage on March 4.
• BOMBS AWAY: After belting 15 home runs a year ago — led by VanEgtern and Marxen with four HRs each — SMU has hit eight round-trippers this season. Coyle and Riley Bauman lead the team with three home runs, with VanEgtern and Marxen launching the other two. … Bauman’s first home run of the season against Franklin on Feb. 26 was the first of his collegiate career. … All seven SMU home run hitters a year ago belted their first career HRs in 2022.
• DRIVING ‘EM IN: Riley Bauman leads the team in RBIs with 13, with Coyle sitting second with 12 RBIs, three more than Tanner Bauman. … Coyle, Tanner Bauman and Ryan Bauman have all recorded three multiple-RBI games this season, one more than Marxen, Miller, and VanEgtern. … Riley Bauman delivered a single-game career-high four RBIs against Carleton last Saturday.
• OUCH: The Cardinals have been hit by a pitch 18 times in 20 games, led by Weber, who has been beaned four times. … Saint Mary’s had two games in 2022 — vs. Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022 and vs. Carleton on May 8, 2022 — in which five Cardinals were hit by a pitch. … Individually, SMU had a player hit by a pitch twice in a game five times.

• PITCHING FIRSTS: Smith tossed his first collegiate nine-inning complete game against Northwestern on March 22, holding the Eagles to one run on five hits in a 3-1 SMU victory. … Eric Charest (Blaine, Minn. / 1-0, 6.43 ERA, 7.0 IP) picked up his first collegiate pitching win against Calvin on March 2, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in five innings of SMU’s 8-2 win over the Knights. The freshman right-hander also collected his first save in a Cardinal uniform with one inning of scoreless relief in SMU’s 3-2 win over MSOE on Feb. 27. … Fischer tossed his first collegiate complete game in Friday’s 6-0, Game 1 loss to Saint John’s.
• SAVING THE DAY: Westcott collected his second save of the season against St. Scholastica on April 3, while Charest and Stomberg each own one save. … Fischer closed out the 2022 season as team’s saves leader with six, one more than Westcott.
• FANNING THE FLAMES: The SMU pitching staff has struck out 107 batters in 20 games, led by Hochevar with 32, Smith with 21, and Fischer with 18. … Hochevar, who led the team with 60 strikeouts a year ago, fanned a career-high 10 batters in last Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Carleton. … Smith struck out a career-high eight batters against Northwestern on March 22.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals have scored 83 runs in 20 games, including a season-high nine runs three times. SMU has plated nine runs in beating St. Scholastica (9-2) and Russell Sage (9-6), while falling to Aurora (13-9). … Saint Mary’s is 6-6 when scoring at least three runs, but winless (0-6) when being held under three runs. • FOR THE RECORD: Macalester enters its conference doubleheader against Saint Mary’s sporting an 11-9 overall record, including a 3-3 mark through its first six MIAC contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Scots had their hitting shoes on in their conference doubleheader against Carleton on Tuesday, as Macalester banged out 26 hits — and scored 35 runs — in sweeping past the Knights 22-2 and 13-3 at Nicholson Field in St. Paul, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Macalester’s matchup against Saint Mary’s is the second straight home doubleheader for the Scots, who opened the home portion of their schedule against Carleton on Wednesday. … Macalester finished 6-6 in its 12 home games a year ago.
• AT THE PLATE: Macalester boasts seven players who are hitting above .300 through 20 games, led by Hayes Waddell, who has gone 21-for-55 en route to his team-best .382 batting average. Anthony Palma (.348), Matt Odom (.340), Matt Mukai (.333), Nathan Gumagay (.327), Niko Alexander (.313), and Kenny Rodriguez (.306) are also sporting batting averages above .300. … As a team,, the Scots sport a .310 batting average (190-for-612).
