SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference showdown against Gustavus sitting at 6-16 overall through the first 22 games of the 2023 season, including a 2-8 showing in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals could not slow down Macalester’s high-octane offense, as the Scots dealt SMU a pair of conference setbacks — 5-3 in the opener and 10-4 in the nightcap — on April 14 at Nicholson Field in St. Paul, Minn.
• AT THE PLATE: Saint Mary’s boast a pair of regulars who are hitting above .300 this season, led by Mason Coyle (Madison, Wis.), who has gone 20-for-57 for a team-leading .351 batting average. Cameron Weber (Holmen, Wis.) is also hitting north of .300, boasting a .316 batting average, while Riley Bauman (Stratford, Wis.) is one percentage point shy of .300, sitting at .299. … As a team, Saint Mary’s is hitting .246 (162-for-658).
• ON THE RUN: The Cardinals have plated 90 runs in 22 games thus far this season. Riley Bauman and Trevon VanEgtern (La Crosse, Wis.) have both scored a team-leading 13 runs, two more than Coyle, while Tanner Bauman (Willmar, Minn.) is sitting fourth with nine runs scored. … Coyle and Brandon Merfeld (La Crosse, Wis.) each scored a career-high four runs in a game a year ago — Merfeld’s coming against Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022, while Coyle achieved the feat against Carleton on May 8, 2022.

• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Saint Mary’s has had six players record their first collegiate hits this season — Jaxon Vance (Eau Claire, Wis.), Daniel Sherman (Richfield, Minn.), Patrick Schork (Janesville, Wis.), Reese Berg (Green Bay, Wis.), Alex Crusan (Bloomington, Minn.), and Noah Lahner (Waukesha, Wis.)
• EXTRA, EXTRA: Saint Mary’s has collected 162 hits in its first 22 games, including 35 for extra bases — 25 doubles, two triples, and eight home runs. … Schork leads the team with four doubles, one more than Riley Bauman, Coyle, and Tanner Bauman, while Coyle and Merfeld own the team’s two triples.
• BOMBS AWAY: After belting 15 home runs a year ago, SMU has hit eight round-trippers this season. Coyle and Riley Bauman lead the team with three home runs, with VanEgtern and Marxen launching the other two. … Bauman’s first home run of the season against Franklin on Feb. 26 was the first of his collegiate career.
• DRIVING ‘EM IN: Riley Bauman leads the team in RBIs with 13, with Coyle sitting second with 12 RBIs, three more than VanEgtern and Tanner Bauman. … Coyle, Tanner Bauman, Ryan Bauman, and VanEgtern have all recorded three multiple-RBI games this season, one more than Marxen and Miller. … Riley Bauman delivered a single-game career-high four RBIs against St. Olaf on April 8.

Timmy Smith (South St. Paul, Minn. / 4-1, 4.25 ERA) leads the staff with 36.0 IP, followed by Addison Hochevar (Lake Geneva, Wis. / 1-4, 3.06 ERA, 32 1/3 IP) and Andrew Fischer (La Crosse, Wis. / 0-4, 8.28 ERA, 29 1/3). • PITCHING FIRSTS: Smith tossed his first collegiate nine-inning complete game against Northwestern on March 22, holding the Eagles to one run on five hits in a 3-1 SMU victory. … Eric Charest (Blaine, Minn. / 1-0, 6.43 ERA, 7.0 IP) picked up his first collegiate pitching win against Calvin on March 2, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in five innings of SMU’s 8-2 win over the Knights. The freshman right-hander also collected his first save in a Cardinal uniform with one inning of scoreless relief in SMU’s 3-2 win over MSOE on Feb. 27. … Fischer tossed his first collegiate complete game in Friday’s 6-0, Game 1 loss to Saint John’s.
• SAVING THE DAY: Westcott collected his second save of the season against St. Scholastica on April 3, while Charest and Stomberg each own one save. … Fischer closed out the 2022 season as team’s saves leader with six, one more than Westcott.
• FANNING THE FLAMES: The SMU pitching staff has struck out 118 batters in 20 games, led by Hochevar with 36, Smith with 23, and Fischer with 18. … Hochevar fanned a career-high 10 batters in last Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Carleton. … Smith struck out a career-high eight batters against Northwestern on March 22.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals have scored 90 runs in 22 games, including a season-high nine runs three times. SMU has plated nine runs in beating St. Scholastica (9-2) and Russell Sage (9-6), while falling to Aurora (13-9). … Saint Mary’s is 6-8 when scoring at least three runs, but winless (0-8) when being held under three runs. On the flip side, SMU has allowed six runs or more in 11 of its 16 losses, including a season-high 13 runs in its 13-9 loss to Aurora on March 21. … The Cardinals are 6-2 when leading or tied after the sixth inning, but are still searching for their first win (0-14) when trailing heading to the seventh. … Saint Mary’s, which scored four or more runs in an inning eight times last season — including a seven-run fourth inning against Hamline on April 19, 2022 and a season-high eight-run second inning in its 16-7 win over Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022 — owns two four-run innings this season.
GUSTAVUS GUSTIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Gustavus enters its conference twinbill against Saint Mary’s sitting at 18-9 overall, including a near-perfect 9-1 mark through the first 10 games of its MIAC slate.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Gusties stepped out of conference play to record their 18th win of the season, holding off a late UW-La Crosse rally to deal the 25th-ranked Eagles an 8-4 setback Wednesday at Copland Park in La Crosse, Wis.
• COMING IN HOT: With their update of No. 25 UW-La Crosse on Wednesday, the Gusties head into their showdown with Saint Mary’s having won five straight and 15 of their last 16 — the lone loss a 9-7, Game 2 setback against Augsburg on April 12. … The loss to Augsburg in the second game of their April 12 doubleheader snapped Gustavus’ season-high nine-game winning streak.
• AT THE PLATE: The Gusties boast a five players who are hitting above .300 through the first 26 games of the season, led by Bryce Novak, who has gone 42-for-101 for a team-best .416 batting average. Jack Hanson and Drake Siens are right on Novak’s heels, sporting a .394 averages, while Gavin Baker is sitting at .347, and Logan Bjorkman is at .333.
• ON THE RUN: Novak has scored a team-leading 35 runs, four more than both Hanson and Baker, while Chris Knowles (22) has also crossed home plate at least 20 times this season. … Novak has scored a season-high four runs in a game twice this season — against Crown on April 6 and Central-Iowa on April 15 — while Baker also scored four times against the Dutch on April 15.

• BOMBS AWAY: Gustavus has launched 25 home runs this season, and has gotten at least one round-tripper from nine different players. Baker leads the HR parade with 10, followed by Hanson with five, Knowles with three, and Bjorkman with three. … GAC hit a single-game, season-high three home runs against Macalester on April 8.
• DRIVING ‘EM HOME: Eight Gusties have already amassed 10+ RBIs this season, led by Baker with 32. Hanson (25), Siens (25), and Knowles (23) have eclipsed the 20-RBI mark, while Bjorkman (18), Timmer (18), Novak (16), and Nick Azar (11) have also reached double digits in RBIs. … Siens is the team-leader with nine multiple-RBI games, one more than Baker. … Siens, Baker, and Hanson have all recorded five RBIs in a game this season.
• STREAKING ALONG: Siens heads into Gustavus’ matchup against Saint Mary’s riding a season-high 12-game hitting streak.
